Great video! I've found that the easiest stump removal method is drill some holes with a long masonry bit into the top of the stump, soak the holes with about 1/2 gal of diesel and set it on fire. We had to remove about 20 diseased oak trees at my father's ranch and I got tired of hacking on the stumps and pulling on them with a tractor. I drilled then soaked them all with diesel and lit them, that night we could see the glowing underground from the front porch. Next day all the stumps were burned down to a depth of 2-3 feet underground with no damage to surrounding areas.

EZ stump removal. Take a 1-inch auger bit and bore down into the center of the stump till you are a few inches below ground level. Pour in 1 OZ bullseye pistol powder, insert electrical ignitor (like they use for model rockets), tightly plug top with appropriately sized wood dowel that has been prepared to allow the electric wires to pass through (a small grove on the side will do). A few hints: 1-If I were you I would not leave a fire like that going in grass anywhere near buildings unsupervised; 2- If you cut a hole near the bottom, put a metal fence pole just inside, and then attach a blower to the other end you will decrease the time it takes to get rid of the stump substantially. I've removed stumps like this in a few hours with this method; 3- With grass that close I'd clear grass about 2' away and lean up some old concrete pavers or brick against the barrel. This will protect against fire going out the sides of the bottom, but also it will guide the barrel and keep it from falling over. Also, I've usually used charcoal briquettes, but in your case you used the extra tree parts successfully---double-whammy!
When i noticed those downvotes i was " stumped " as well. Awesome trick though wish i could do this in my front lawn but i'm in city limits and no fires allowed.
It’s a good idea to drill a few 1” holes in the side of the barrel. Sometimes, it gets short on air, even though that didn’t happen in this video. Just pick a line up the side and throw one in about every 6”.
I’m very pleased that TH-cam made this video trending, a small TH-camr like you with this kind of knowledge and a little bit better camera should grow into something amazing

I've seen stump burning efforts before and none used a steel drum so they got limited results. The drum method employs the "chimney" effect making for a super hot fire down at the bottom that burned deep into stump. Well done and thanks for posting! Also, all those comments Re the snips/Ave and the paint on the drum .... love 'em!😄
It works because the barrel creates a draft like a fireplace insert and helps to concentrate the heat where it's wanted and not just dispersed radially in the surrounding air..clever, and works great!
Drill holes close together in the center. Drill holes from the side as low as possible leading to the center of the stump. Light a fire in the center it will draw air from the side holes like a torch. Overnight the stump will be 95% gone.
Very educational beneficial! Rewarding! That barrell not sitting on the ground complimented the necessity of supplying an important factor for a good fire, i .e. oxygen. To use an air bellows at the bottom of that barrel would have caused that to expediate that showing a perfect example how a wind will increase the speed of a fire! Everything worked extremely well in your favor! Thanks for the video.
I had always heard that too. I was even wondering about walking away from a burning fire. I was always taught to stay with a burning fire in case it gets out of control.
Coming from experience here, we burned a stump once and did have grass start burning appx 30 feet away where a root surfaced. The fire will travel roots that are near the surface.
Are you talking about concrete CULVERT pipe? Don't do this. Fire and concrete don't mix very well. Air pockets in the mix can explode and it's like standing next to a grenade.
Great to see this method in action. Lots easier in an open area away from the house or wood fence, though. Would stay with the fire, however... with a hose.
It wasn't as close to the house as it seemed on video. My brother in law was watching the fire while I was gone. Thanks for watching my videos and commenting!! Please share on social media to help me grow my channel. Take care....
Gotta be careful doing this too close to houses. Sometimes root systems run under houses, and those root systems catch fire and keep smoldering and working it's way down the root. Next thing you know your house is on fire
@@JM-yx1lm dude I've burned stumps many times and watch the fire pop out of the ground feet away from the initial fire, roots are wood and burn also, and fire will smolder underground for hours and even days, ever heard of a pit for cooking pigs?
Seen it first hand, they burn for weeks. Here in Australia we had a bad bush fire that claimed 80+ houses, there were still fire brigade on site 6 weeks after the fire was out digging up smouldering tree stumps and roots.
@@mowerdog I was just noticing the date it was posted and the amount of recent comments it's getting plus the fact that it was suggested to me when I wasn't searching for anything like this at all. BTW I did a similar thing but I used an old filing cabinet instead of a barrel.
Neat! I found out, through my own trial and error, there is something to be said about learning to be ambidextrous with tools. (Or going the other way around the barrel). But I'm going to suggest this to my father in law. Cool tip on using a barrel!
It can work to well. When attempting to burn a stump use an abundance of caution. Tree stump roots can have an extensive root systems. Fire will burn down into the ground and continue to burn the roots like a wick for a candle. If the particular root nears the surface and attains oxygen it will reignite. If there is fuel (something to burn) you will have a fire. Depending on the stump roots size the wick can burn underneath for a long period of time..possibly days. Experience.
as insurance take a paddle bit and drill some big holes in the stump drench it with diesel fuel for a couple days till the stump takes it in making it a wooden wick. when you feel its soaked in good then build your fire . i got rid of a couple that way ...the barrel is a good idea to keep the fire where the action is the two ideas together i think is a winner
Nice job, BTW if u would drill a few small holes around the barrel at about 1/5th from the bottom to let in air it would have burned a little hotter and faster... But I'm little scared to try it since my stump is right next to my house...
Not a bad idea but be very careful because the roots may smolder underground for months. That’s how forest fires restart the next season sometimes. It looked like the stump was nowhere near anything but then you got a different angle and it’s pretty close to your house. Keep an eye on it for a while
Holy Christ burgers! I am doing this for sure this summer. I have a ton of bastard pine and cedar stumps from felling beetle wood. Gotta be careful, though. I once burned a pile on top of a huge pine stump....it burned but then...no shit...two WEEKS later I had a fire started about twenty feet away. Apparently, it smoldered and followed an underground root and appeared back above ground. I live in the N. Cali mountain forests - we can´t screw around too much. Thank you for the technique!
I thought you were going to use a bag of charcoal after starting the fire with the wood. I think that charcoal would burn hotter. Maybe a fire ring would work instead of the barrel for a stump too large for the barrel to fit. The fire ring isn’t as high as the barrel, but you could use charcoal inside the fire ring to contain the fire better in the shorter fire ring.
you can cut the lid off with a cold chisel and a good sized hammer. doesn't leave that lip, doesn't take as long as you might think and is oddly satisfying.
Been doing this all my life, a little advice if the barrel fits a little large place a large stone or brick so it gets plenty of air flow (basically a rocket stove). If you are in a hurry start up a leaf blower and aim it towards the small opening from the rock or brick
If you take a 5/8 boring bit and drill holes into the stump then fill them with stump out and some diesel fuel a week before you light it up that stump will be history in 1 burn.
This is why it is VERY IMPORTANT not to do this with stumps near forests or heavy brush growth. It can jump from the roots of the stump you want gone to the roots of other trees/bushes/etc and cause a major fire.
@@raptureready9502 ...its fairly well documented, actually, and ground fires can smoulder for a looooooooong time, resulting in fires jumping to other trees because of interconnected roots
I do this at the lake, been working on clearing out a space for a camper in the woods. You can get a fresh good sized stump (1-2 feet) burned out in a solid day, especially if it is a cedar or pine, if you keep up on feeding the fire.
Awesome tip. But thank god for fast forward. A lot of unnecessary time fillers to say. Cut ends out of barrel place over stump. Build fire . stump gone.
You need to move to Johnson County Missouri..... I can shoot my guns off my front porch and the neighbors don't call the Sheriff. They just shoot some rounds off too!!!.. I can burn my trash. I can build right on my fence line. I can park my truck on my own grass without getting a notice. Less government is a good thing.
Maybe that's because if you do this in an area with a lot of roots, you could be the cause of the next major brush-fire that destroys millions of dollars of property, and harms/kills people. Regulations are written in blood. Check who's blood was used before you complain about the regulations.
WOW, needless to say, I'm glad I'm 1000 miles away from you. Shooting your gun off the front porch parking in the front yard.....Classy neighborhood, safe too!!!. @@mowerdog

Also, all those comments Re the snips/Ave and the paint on the drum .... love 'em!😄
Thanks!
I use the same method but pour used cooking oil on the stump prior to lighting.
That sounds yummy!
Take diesel and old motor oil and mix it together and soak the log and let set for a little while then light it up and the stump will be gone
Thank you great video ill be doing this trick this weekend.
You're welcome Derek!
Cleanest stump burn on the Tube my man.
Thank you. I appreciate you watching my videos!
Incredible. Fire burns wood. I can't thank TH-cam enough for recommending this video to me. Winter will never be the same again!
It works because the barrel creates a draft like a fireplace insert and helps to concentrate the heat where it's wanted and not just dispersed radially in the surrounding air..clever, and works great!
You win, best method ever. Stump grinder foe sale.
Plus you can roast Weenies!!!
@@mowerdog ouch!
Drill holes close together in the center. Drill holes from the side as low as possible leading to the center of the stump. Light a fire in the center it will draw air from the side holes like a torch. Overnight the stump will be 95% gone.
We did the same method but we drilled holes a put diesel in holes then fired it up
Very educational beneficial! Rewarding! That barrell not sitting on the ground complimented the necessity of supplying an important factor for a good fire, i
.e. oxygen. To use an air bellows at the bottom of that barrel would have caused that to expediate that showing a perfect example how a wind will increase the speed of a fire! Everything worked extremely well in your favor! Thanks for the video.
Indeed. After this stump I drilled one inch holes around the bottom of the barrel.
Now that's what I call a useful video. Well done sir
Be aware!!! Fire can travel with the roots a VERY far distance and start new fires. Under the house even^^
Even popup days later!
@J what you believe is irrelevant. as a wild land fire fighter, we know this is a big part of any fire.
You built a 10 foot fire, 20 feet from a house... you also said something about “leaving for an hour”....
lol, my kinda dude.
This stump was at my Brother in laws house. He watched the barrel when I would leave. So it was never left unattended.
@@mowerdog You had me at "in-laws house"....after that I was like, "oh, ok, that makes perfect sense now". lol
"Hell yeah it works!"
I do this with a 36" piece of convert pipe. Works good. If you have a small stump, a half can and a bag or charcoal works nice too.
"Does it work?? Hell yeah it works" Hahahaha that was GREAT!!
Damn, that blue barrel must have been hot when you switched it out with the white one!
Gotta be careful doing this too close to houses. Sometimes root systems run under houses, and those root systems catch fire and keep smoldering and working it's way down the root. Next thing you know your house is on fire
Do you realize how stupid that is? I mean are you really serious or was this sarcasm that i couldnt tell?
@@JM-yx1lm dude I've burned stumps many times and watch the fire pop out of the ground feet away from the initial fire, roots are wood and burn also, and fire will smolder underground for hours and even days, ever heard of a pit for cooking pigs?
@@JM-yx1lm also look up the term "root fire" and stfu
Seen it first hand, they burn for weeks.
Here in Australia we had a bad bush fire that claimed 80+ houses, there were still fire brigade on site 6 weeks after the fire was out digging up smouldering tree stumps and roots.
J M Your comment is an excellent example of ignorant certitude. I predict you’ll soon delete it in embarrassment. 😜
The TH-cam Gods have decided this video is worthy all of the sudden.
How do you know that?
@@mowerdog I was just noticing the date it was posted and the amount of recent comments it's getting plus the fact that it was suggested to me when I wasn't searching for anything like this at all.
BTW I did a similar thing but I used an old filing cabinet instead of a barrel.
Neat! I found out, through my own trial and error, there is something to be said about learning to be ambidextrous with tools. (Or going the other way around the barrel).
But I'm going to suggest this to my father in law. Cool tip on using a barrel!
Thanks1
I use about half a bale of hay and let it burn slowly
what you have left over is potash, and you can feed that to your plants.
john stone what you have there is just ash. Potash is potassium chloride, which is a salt.
It's barrel ash, and it's useless
RJ 1999 it’s not useless. It’s alkaline, so if you have soil that has a ph which is to low you can raise it by adding it.
@@RJ1999x its carbonated, so its not useless

I’m so glad he raked it in the end. That was so satisfying.
I did it for you and you only!
Experience.
Never in many stump burning’s had one light up somewhere else
as insurance take a paddle bit and drill some big holes in the stump drench it with diesel fuel for a couple days till the stump takes it in making it a wooden wick. when you feel its soaked in good then build your fire . i got rid of a couple that way ...the barrel is a good idea to keep the fire where the action is the two ideas together i think is a winner
Nice job, BTW if u would drill a few small holes around the barrel at about 1/5th from the bottom to let in air it would have burned a little hotter and faster...
But I'm little scared to try it since my stump is right next to my house...
Just build a small fire. Have your hose ready... lol
Not a bad idea but be very careful because the roots may smolder underground for months. That’s how forest fires restart the next season sometimes. It looked like the stump was nowhere near anything but then you got a different angle and it’s pretty close to your house. Keep an eye on it for a while
It's still standing. I got lucky
Yikes
That industrial strength can opener is kickass!
Charcoal would work good to get the stump burning.
Expectation: Meh!
Reality: Holy crap! That was really effective!
That is amazing! Good video. Thanks
Thank you for watching!
I love what you did. I’ve feld trees... summertime is a good time to clean the floor of my land. Thanks again. That barrel aids containing the fire. 😊
Thank you Joan! It does contain the main fire quite well.
Hell yeah it works!!!! I want to cut down a tree and get a barrel and burn the stump just to do it that looks awesome
Nice video. I have done this and it does work well.
you can cut the lid off with a cold chisel and a good sized hammer. doesn't leave that lip, doesn't take as long as you might think and is oddly satisfying.
I've done it that way before. I like the tool better. Lol
Been doing this all my life, a little advice if the barrel fits a little large place a large stone or brick so it gets plenty of air flow (basically a rocket stove). If you are in a hurry start up a leaf blower and aim it towards the small opening from the rock or brick
squirrel cage fan back bout 15ft were wont get too hot works awesome n alot quieter
I appreciate the video you posted. I have several stubborn stumps that need to go. This method will work best for them. Thank you!
You're welcome!
Great video, thanks! Especially satisfying when you finally looked into the top of the barrel the next day and there was nothing!
That was crazy - right....
YOU MEAN WOOD BURNS!?😀 AMAZING!
I was wondering if it did.........
If you take a 5/8 boring bit and drill holes into the stump then fill them with stump out and some diesel fuel a week before you light it up that stump will be history in 1 burn.
why bother spending money on fuels!
Dang, I've only got a 3/4" bit. So close!
You forgot to get the family around and cook some s'mores that night.
This video is OG how I got caught up in the stump burning rabbit hole. TQ.
Lol. Thanks for watching! Please share.
By far the biggest and loadest Canopener i have ever seen..
It's for large Tuna in a drum!
Done that myself sir. It even followed the roots out a ways.
Nice!
This is why it is VERY IMPORTANT not to do this with stumps near forests or heavy brush growth. It can jump from the roots of the stump you want gone to the roots of other trees/bushes/etc and cause a major fire.
@@calebcain4729 stop lying! That could never happen 😂 geeze
@@raptureready9502 ...its fairly well documented, actually, and ground fires can smoulder for a looooooooong time, resulting in fires jumping to other trees because of interconnected roots

Take an oxygen tank with a real long hose stick to hose underneath that Barrel and that will really speed things up
Hell yeah
it's a nice looking piece of property you got there. A pond and some pasture land, not to mention one less stump. Wish I had it
That was my brother in laws house. He doesn't own the lake.
Wow, that surprised me. I did not expect it to burn it underground so quickly!
If the stump was green I doubt if that would go so fast.
lutemule with that much heat it dry out in no time
I do this at the lake, been working on clearing out a space for a camper in the woods. You can get a fresh good sized stump (1-2 feet) burned out in a solid day, especially if it is a cedar or pine, if you keep up on feeding the fire.
@@tauneutrino1able Well... Pine usually burns like hellfire anyways.
Awesome tip. But thank god for fast forward. A lot of unnecessary time fillers to say. Cut ends out of barrel place over stump. Build fire . stump gone.
I'm glad you used the tools available to fast forward.

Where do you live? I can't do this in Commie-fornia!!!
@@mowerdog but is it really?
Maybe that's because if you do this in an area with a lot of roots, you could be the cause of the next major brush-fire that destroys millions of dollars of property, and harms/kills people.
Regulations are written in blood. Check who's blood was used before you complain about the regulations.
