Sturla- Thanks for posting this clinic of Tony Williams performing this dynamic open solo. It was the opener to his set at the Commodore in Vancouver on June 25th, 1989. It was somewhat dramatic in that his performance was the focus for a few minutes before the quintet slowly, individually headed to their marks for the rest of the tune & evening. Same lineup of stellar musicians here too: Mulgrew Miller p), Wallace Roney tr), Bill Pierce horns), and Bob Hurst b).
In high school, i had this friend and we were drummers and he took this shit serious as a heart attack and i kept saying John Bonham and Keith Moon were the be all end all of drummers and my buddy would say yes theyre great but you gotta check out steve gadd and Tony williams and billy Cobham and Omar Hakim and i was like no thanks. Ooops!! Sorry Barry, i should have listened to you in 1978!!
I've never understood why he'd insist on making the audience watch him practice a double stroke roll? I'm 54. And I'm still wondering. Seriously, I'm not wrong. What's up with that?
Tony Williams plays the simplest stuff in his own inimitable voice and it’s always completely spellbinding to watch and hear.
Exactly!! Such a deep and strong voice on the instrument.
Mehhh, I don't agree. His playing was good. His solos were tiresome.
@@Gretsch0997 you bothered to add a comment just to crap on my love of Tony Williams?

@ so what is “amazing” about this open roll ? It’s a warmup exercise not a drum solo
