Look if you can ignore the Lack of Helmets and Magical Girls, Valkyria Chronicles actually does a pretty good job at being a war anime. Like you can even see Strategy and Tactics being implemented in the story in practically all episodes that have a battle. Valkyria Chronicles is actually by far to me probably the best anime that showcases WW1/WW2.

Then again, you'd first have to find out if there is indeed a true religion and which one it is. But, yes, many do punish you for not believing, even if you have been an upstanding and moral person your entire life otherwise.
