The more you understtand the story, the more you see how based Himmel is. The second verse is especialy true to highlight Himmel's nature.
Himmel was really nice to her and understanding but always pushed to do things that she will regret not doing he's really a great friend every flashback of him is so emotional I don't know how they managed to build such a good character in little amount of time

Just came back from Frieren vs Aura. It was phenomenal, the build up from Frieren past up to Himmel just to show how much her growth as mage to fight Aura was truly breathtaking.
I love how it’s written from Frieren’s POV. This whole song is about Himmel, the whole reason her journey started.
Yoasobi songs are just stories of each MC from their respective animes and i love it

The YOASOBI project started as novels written into songs, & every single song released is based on a novel. It's basically songwriting that harkens back to the days where bards still roam the lands, where songs were essentially tales & stories, meant mostly for commemorating notable events & people, to be passed on future generations as pieces of history, instead of modern day songwriting where songs were mostly entertainment products. YOASOBI simply brought back the way songs used to be written & gave them a modern twist in arrangements.

One thing that I love about this song is the tempo.
During the verses and interludes the BPM is around 104, which feels a little bit slow. Then during the choruses, it jumps to 208, which feels very fast.
It's a beautiful because it symbolises the difference in perception of time between Frieren and the human characters.

Also, the verse after the first chorus doesn't come back to 104. It stays at 208, meaning her time understanding has been altered ever since she realized time flows differently for other people. Just a theory tho

For some reason i get chills just thinking about it, and all i got to know about him is straight up flashbacks!?? When your idol is someone great you’re destined for greatness.
If you think about it, it's even deeper than that. He wanted his love to remember him even after his death as she has such a long lifespan. By his own words, "I don't want you to be lonely." Such an amazing dude, he planned everything (in a good way) for her.

Yuusha Backstory (Soudou) summary
In a quaint city known as the Music City, five years after the hero Himmel's death, Frieren explored. The city was steeped in music and culture, and Freelen encountered an old shopkeeper offering a unique magical musical instrument called Maeklich. This instrument could take over a hundred years to master. Frieren learned that the shopkeeper wanted someone like him to have it. After contemplation, Freelen agreed to consider it.
Frieren continued to explore the city, reminiscing about Himmel and their shared adventures. She stumbled upon a bronze statue of Himmel, and an old woman revealed that Himmel had mentioned Freelen's name to her in the past. She asked Frieren for help in removing a memory-erasing spell she had cast on herself as a teenager.
Frieren agreed to help the old woman, and after a successful spell, the woman regained her lost memories. She realized her deep passion for music and decided to learn to play the Maeklich. In return, she gifted Frieren a magic book containing recorded sounds from various moments in her life, including Himmel's voice.
Frieren spent time in the city, enjoying its music and culture, and eventually decided to leave after three months. She was touched by the old woman's journey of rediscovery and the growth of the young horn player in the marching band. As she departed, the sound of the city's music left a lasting impression on her.

haven’t even watched the anime or read the manga but i’m crying. the lyrics are really powerful and show a lot about the characters. i now want to know the story behind these lyrics, i just hope it won’t be as sad as it sounds😭

It's not sad actually. It just heartwarming show that make you cry because of how beautiful and meaningful the journey they had. it really beautiful that hit you until you cry
What is sad? I feel sad, but the message of the story is to live in the present. As a viewer and a hopeless romantic I feel sad, because Frieren just finally started to get her feelings for Himmel when it was too late.

I got here from someone saying that people hate Yoasobi for this intro. All I can see here is love. Anyway, I really got surprised when i first heard it.
People just talking from their rear end, I admit I don’t follow Yao so I closely, but their music is good, and this OP obviously considers the source material, a tailored, bespoke theme. Nothing generic here, and one has to really appreciate this piece for that too. It really is a banger
It's because they don't understand the lyrics since they're in Japanese. It's the same clowns that said the Hidden Inventory opening of JJK was upbeat. They translated Yuusha to Brave, but typically, Yuusha is translated to Hero. If you even understand a bit of the story it's immediately understood that the song is about Himmel. The song imo sounds disjointed because that reflects Freiren's feelings toward Himmel. She is sad because she wish she took time to know him better, but the story is largely about Freiren processing her feelings about Himmel. She doesn't know how to feel or think about the time they had, just that it was important to her and she wants to understand why and it's kind of a bittersweet melancholy type of story.
It's kind of like how she keeps Himmel's ring, but in a box with other random stuff, never put two and two together the meaning of Himmel giving her a mirror lotus ring, but when she lost the ring she endlessly searched by herself until she found it. That is Freiren in a nutshell.

This song isn't sad it's just touching. I really can't stop imagining how good it'd be if they could spend more time but that'd not what the story about.
The story is about her journey after his death tracing the time they spent together in the past.
Well, maybe it's a good thing that Frieren isn't an emotional person otherwise the story would be dark.
Anyways the song is really good, it depicts the "leisure" and many different emotions from reminiscing things of the past.

Personally for me it precisely because Frieren isnt emotional is why it hits harder, it felt a lot sadder.
Cause to us human, all this comes naturally but to her it's something that she need to learn, but not before when things already happened and she unable to change anything. She was left with the aftermath that she has to deal with, and thats really such a lonely journey.
Even just the start of the journey alone already hit shit damn hard. The whole journey is motivated by intense profound regret, that despite having spent 10 whole years with the gang, & despite knowing that humans are short-lived creatures, she never once tried to know Himmel better, while Himmel evidently kept her in his thoughts the whole time. Everyone has their regrets, yet very few go on to spend a good chunk of their lives doing stuff, profound, monumental stuff, to make up for said regrets. It's just as Eisen put it, the years Frieren spent with them amounted to less than 1/100 of her life so far, yet that less than 1/100 ended up changing her life forever.

As far as I know he stood loyal to her until the very end, never getting a family and always waiting for the time they would watch the meteors, aw man she is top, but he knew this would happen😢
Getting old makes this song hit. I'm almost 40 and very happy eith the life I have. But the feeling of "what if" never really goes away. A longing for an impossible time..

I thought this was gonna be just an overrated anime, I watched the first episodes and I already knew this was a masterpiece 😭
And through to almost the last episode, it stays goated.
The lyrics ate Frieren to Himmel. They are my favorite couple in anime history. Their bond has something so tender.....unique and unconditional like an ever-lasting-- old-couple kind of love overcoming death and time itsself. I hope they'll be reunited in the after life in the end.❤
Its all because Himmel never gave up even though he knew Frieren would most likely never get the feelings in his lifetime. He just loved her for her and thats honestly the best way to picture love. Really nice touch too that Himmel never actually settled for anyone else
they really combined the best two things to make this masterpiece. Frieren is my anime of the year and we're only 3months in .... Yoasobi... nuff said.

I know almost nothing about this show except that Freiren’s sense of time is super fast and that she probably lives way longer than a normal person. I got this idea from another comment, but I love the idea that the chorus being faster than the rest of the song represents time flying by from her perspective. The concept gives me chills.

I didn't like this song the first time I heard it when Yoasobi released it. But day after day when I watched Frieren, I tried to not skip the opening and I started to like it.

I kept seeing this song everywhere on Instagram reels and even used it for one of mine because I loved it immediately, I'm glad that now I finally know where it's from (as in anime, I already knew who the artists were). I haven't watched this anime since I read vol. 1 of the manga and couldn't get into it, I will read vol. 2 and then see if I want to continue the series. I don’t know why I never thought that it could be from an anime. This song was the second song I heard by them and it got me into listening to more of their songs and I love them😊

Okay, so while this absolutely delivers the meaning, which the video above gets wrong in many spots, the wording is frankly very awkward here, only designed to make it singable in english (which they do th-cam.com/video/ZxRQjB8-KOQ/w-d-xo.html).
It does not retain the vibe, adds forced flourish to what was plain and striaghtforward japanese, and results in a few clumsy sentences.
I don't like it, and as far as translating goes, I'd prefer something more direct albeit not singable in the same melody. Some anime subs have a good one, but haven't found anything satisfying on youtube, honestly.

Idk why people think this doesn't fit the anime?? The song isn't so hyped the diffrence in between the melody and the music is chefs kiss it literally catches the anime so well since its not all just walking and talking, people complaining about the op made the anime seem like a very calm slice of life anime i thought the anime was like that until i watched it because of those comments, a song like this suits the adventure genre the best not too much and not like an ending song
