    I guess I missed the episode, but I’m guessing the ram pump didn’t work out ?

    • @StoneyRidgeFarmer
      @StoneyRidgeFarmer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Great Question! Ram pump as a permanent hassle free system just isn't feesable. It works, it pumps but there's constant maintenance and upkeep. You basically have to keep your eye on it twice a day to ensure you're still pumping water. Then there's the freeze factor associated, it's just not a permanent setup...can't leave the farm for a day without something going wrong

      Thank you for another great video. Can you share your rationale for not using the spare vertical pipe for twisting stability? I understand the second group of four solar panels was overkill.

      Have you checked the price of a new complete windmill installation lately? It would cost double this install....and doing it without special equipment would be very difficult. We replace thousands of windmills every year....I know folks think they look cool but wait until they have to work on them. Some ranchers even leave the windmill up for looks but put a solar pump in for maintenance free water.

    I worked construction building commercial solar fields. During the final QC walkthrough, we had a few panels that needed to be replaced. When the electricians disconnected one of those MC4 connectors, there was about a 16" power arc. Very powerful.

    I am from a colder climate but we drill a 1/16 weap hole in the tubing so the well drains below the frost line. Solar wells will freeze solid at night.

    Iv´e been struggling with batteries for years, pumping water with an off grid system. I realized that this system is exactly what i need. Taking away the pump from my house is huge difference, since it´s about 1.7 KW/h less. Plus, the battery bank had to be pretty big to sustain that consumption without damaging the batteries (some lasted less than a year!) Thanks for the upload

      My thought exactly. I thought cows rub against anything that doesn't shock them. Raccoons and other critters (some two legged) can also cause problems. Better consider caging it in, instead of using the panels as shade. maybe also electrifying it; I hope we are both wrong. Also, it isn't too hard to imagine some thief getting electrocuted while trying to steal the solar panels. Electric utilities have paid millions to families of thieves who were electrocuted while stealing copper wire.

    • @chelemichele1524
      @chelemichele1524 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@marlinl.306 1.. if your stealing something and you get hurt.. well they/families shouldn't be able to sue.. that's just wrong.. and after he put the panels on I think he said he would be putting a fence around it..

    • @marlinl.306
      @marlinl.306 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@chelemichele1524Best I can remember the thief had been a lineman at one time, and had an understanding of how the safety equipment at the substation works, and he thought he had tripped the recloser (giant breaker), but it failed to work. I think the court found the power company guilty of negligence. agree completely that criminals should not have the same rights as law abiding citizens.
      I didn't catch that he was planning to add a fence. I remember him mentioning that the cows could use the solar panels as shade. so the fence can't be very far from the panels. Thanks for letting me know.
      Oh, and Josh, thanks for putting out videos like this one. I never considered a pump without a battery. I hope it works great for you. I know you spend lots of time doing research, and I'm sure it will pay off.

      Pumping water during the day to an elevated tank, or a ground tank at the highest point on the property is the most efficient solution. Use the free and reliable solar (it works everyday of the year) to pump water to the tank, you have your water and energy (gravity) stored in one. Perfect for that extinguishing the night time fire. Josh said it, store water not energy, just store your water up a bit higher, gravity is great at distributing water :-) Tanks are cheaper than batteries, locally produced, environmentally friendly and have a much longer life.

  • @TheUserid82
    @TheUserid82 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If you are putting a fence around the solar and well a simple trick you can do is to add a small chain link fence just outside that and plant some faster growing berry bushes between the fence lines as the cows will think they are getting a treat as they eat what they can reach. You will still get some berries on the inside of the fence with what is between them being for the wild animals in the area with the only real work you need to do is to cut the old limbs as they grow in but you can dispose of them by simply tossing to the cows.

    I've been looking into off-grid solar for my well, and had an installer tell me I needed a pressure tank (like in my house) to receive the water, and a pressure switch to turn off the pump when it filled, so the pump doesn't try to run "dead head" (against a closed water line). I did not see this feature in the video... what did you do to resolve this issue? Thanks!

    I'd be nice if you could cap the ends of the support structure pipes, so you don't get wasps to build nests in there

    Nice system hope it serves you well. Just curious if a battery pack could be installed as backup power?

      Shawn, a battery could be used on any of our systems but this system is for stock water and irrigation of pasture so it is not needed. Storing water is always cheaper than storing power. When we design systems we like to understand the usage so we can make the system as efficient as possible, which will save you money.

    Josh - working on same project but behind you (-30 deg and frozen ground). Trying to design/build dual axis sun tracker in 6 module arrangement. Issue: trying to NOT poke 30 holes in new roof or make a sub optimized fixed ground mount. Pipes 1st issue with used oil/well casing, muffler pipe, black pipe, galvanized, fence corner posts...etcetera. Where did you find posts? Also not finding your vertical post top mount bracket...could you please help a fellow farmer diy'er ? Thank you so much for the vids so have have enjoyed them ALL, all the best steve

      The post bracket is made by Lorenz solar my friend. All the posts came from farmfencesolutions.com they are heavy duty SS40 pipe. Hit them up buddy....as for DIY...I'm sure you got this....do you really need the sun tracker? More potential problems right...with more moving parts

    Josh - Great system. Are you able to share what the cost for the solar set up was? Thanks

      it's tough to say because my application is very different from what you might install. As little as $3500 ish....as much as $10k or more...it all depends on your situation and specific needs

    @Eric Macias I'm currently researching having my own well drilled at my residence in South Carolina (near Augusta, GA). How do I contact someone like yourself to speak about the possiblility of outfitting my well with a Lorentz solution?

    Beat quote yet. “They stay thawed out with the temperature of the water. So it’s going to be pretty cool.” I bet it will be.

      Yep those Mirafount waterers are really interesting, they use geothermal and insulation to keep themselves thawed out.

    I'm interested in an on demand solar back up for a 110v in the event of a power outage.

    I would drill a hole and mount with nuts, washer, and bolts just in case the clips give due to high winds.
