He has ears. Tool are nothing remotely special. I’d never say they’re bad, because they’re objectively clearly very talented musicians, but they’re just so boring and their fans overhype them. People bang on about them being "complex" while actively ignoring so many other significantly better prog and tech bands, and many of those prog bands can beat them on atmosphere as well.
