PunPun was probably the most impactful story to my life specifically because it taught me the tragedy that is nostalgia. PunPun and Aiko pursue that childhood inosence and dream of theirs and they ultimatley realize it didn't work. Reality and being an adult has no room for childhood wonder or dreams and its mostly our fault, but nobody knows why it has to be that way. We try to escape to our past selves and promises because the reality and responibilites of our curent adulthood terify us. We are so uncertain of the path we are on now meanwhile the path we were on as kids seemed to make so much more sense.

"Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable."
This quote resonates so much for me with this unhinged trip of a story. To put it bluntly, Goodnight Punpun is such an anomaly for my experiences in literature. I have never rapidly shifted my perspective on anything more than what Asano fulfilled here. He played with my emotions like a fiddle, and he became an unintentionally roundabout mentor for how I look at things today.
I initially read it about three & a half years ago; when I was about to turn 15-- and it absolutely destroyed me. The absolute shock about how much failures, regret, shame, hostility, and expectations adulthood brings-- as well as how depraved the whole fiasco was-- ruined my life during that time. It overwhelmed me. My grades were failing, my family were concerned for my mental health, I was less enthusiastic to interact with my friends, I slept thinking that I didn't want to ever wake up, and I had a gloom look at the sky every time I tried something, somewhere, for anything. The way I walked was slouched and aimless. The way I spoke was heavy, difficult. All I saw was a fear I couldn't even explain. I couldn't move forward, because this story made me question if it's even worth it to see what's beyond for me. If it all amounts to something so undeniably unpredictable, how exactly will I, in every sense of the imagination, fathom that?
14y/o me didn't ask for a deep dive into painful, existential dread when I looked up "dark manga to read online"; and yet, there I was, emotionally destroyed, still glued to read even more of it. My innocence was stripped in an instant. An addiction grew inside me. It was a bizarre hybrid of disgust and curiosity that damaged my psyche indefinitely. An hour, a day, a month... its influence on my life arose directly proportional with my revulsion. As I re-read, and re-read, and re-read, I felt like the whole world was a massive, bitter, disgusting force that didn't amount to anything. A nothing burger that bloated my brain; a spit on the face I couldn't clean; a ringing in my soul which wouldn't go away. It burdened me with so much. At some point, I thought of all my pain as a farce, which pushed all that expressionless sadness to anger. All my emotions compelled me to make a hate-filled blog on an app called 'Amino'. Through which, I regurgitated a post showcasing all my stress, unwarranted sadness, and aimless hatred. Directing all the blame to the story's idealism on meaninglessness, nihilistic takes on destiny and morbid insanity. As I continued writing that post, I felt both self-fulfillment, and sheer disappointment. But I didn't care. I needed a punching bag; I wished for a scapegoat; I begged for a target. Why? Because it was so tiring hating me. To make the hatred of my own mortality, through reading this story, just a tad bit easier to cope with, I pushed the blame. I despised Asano, despised nihilistic storytelling in general, despised myself, despised this book, and never looked back. It was bad faith criticism which was fueled by a rapidly warped child who couldn't understand all of what he consumed.
Fast forward now to today, I recently turned 18 years old. And, uh, well... to put it bluntly once again, I have experienced a terrifying amount of what Punpun went through in his journey. Some of which I don't want to mention, since they're too personal forms of trauma. It breaks me so much that has me still uncomfortable to share anonymously. Anyway, the point is: I was naïve, comfortable, and hardheaded with how I thought life was, what it amounted to, what it means, and what it should be... all those years ago. It was like visiting an old friend who abused me to death, only to understand that the punches they threw at me were filled with a complex reason I didn't understand. The pain this story gave to my body through those punches re-contextualized itself into another pain which hurts me even more: empathetic, yet self-serving, delineation. Oyasumi Punpun became my therapist, my abuser, and my friend. Writing this down, it feels so absurd to decompartmentalize how I ended up here, but all of it is true. About 4 years have passed since my very first time I touched this manga. As I'm re-reading Punpun now, in a single instant of realization, it suddenly became an amalgamation of so many unforeseen terrible things that I can associate with my own life. Through witnessing, time and time again, how deep of a rabbit hole Punpun's descent into madness was (as a product of all his failures), it gives me the motivation to do something better. Nothing outstanding, just something better. I didn't have it as bad as him, but I still share a lot of what the story presented. I cannot even imagine how I would cope with a life under his circumstances, and that's the point. The cyclical nature of Punpun's ending insinuates what our stories could have been. The potential of something even lower if we were given the absolute worst. If we were dealt his cards, would we have fallen under Punpun's inhumane decisions and tribulations? Or are we, readers of his hell, capable of making that intangible terror... just a little bit better? Do we gaslight ourselves into failure, or is it intrinsically inescapable? I wish I have an answer, I really do. But I don't know.
What I do know, though, is that this bird creature went through so much. A boy that deserves everything he doesn't deserve. Whether that everything has pity, empathy, scrutiny, compassion, confusion, mercy, disgust, hatred, forgiveness, tolerance, or any other spectrum of emotion that is reasonable to attribute his tragedy-- well... Punpun deserves all of that, which he didn't deserve at all. That's a very horrifying existence, don't you think? It's levels of suffering to that of the crucifixion, except, it wasn't the endurance of a God. It's something that is malleable to all of us, but most veracious to this fictional bird. I would like to avoid that turmoil as much as I can. I didn't enjoy this manga, and I never will. If anything, if I could get away with it, I think that I'd personally punch Inio Asano in the face. Multiple times. Without holding back. However, his masterclass of a downwards spiral offered one of my most unforgettable experiences to any texts I've read.
I looked outside my window, on an uneventful day, during a boring evening, under an average looking sky. I stared at that unexceptional sky for a good minute or so. Nothing particularly worth noting. Well, okay. The ambience was nice; though, the hue of the sunset could have been a bit warmer. I'd be lying if I said I wanted this view to be one etched into my memory. In any case, within the monotonously mediocre silence, within that calm-- a maelstrom was emerging. The scariest storm one can go through without any water. Everything I went through, everything I eventually understood, everything that has yet to come. All of it. It kept ricocheting as clashing noise in my head. Yearning for a reason, a probable meaning, or a semblance of worth. I couldn't wrap my head around it, while it continued wrapping my head. That unease was meant to last for an eternity-- I was all too familiar with it. Then, it didn't. Then, it continued being that way. In an instant, it came to a halt. It made sense, somehow. I'm not sure how exactly it started. What I am certain of is that it did not feel numb, it was... liberating. My chest tightened, my breathing accelerated, my vision spun. Foolishly, I genuinely asked myself: why? This is the act of a fool because, deep down, I think I knew why. I've always knew. And in that knowing, I was stuck in limbo will all the dormant emotion rushing up. It didn't exactly stop, it just kept getting stronger. I was scared, relieved, confused, and excited all at the same time. That ordinary sky didn't change whatsoever, yet it somehow looked a bit more beautiful. I tried to put it into words, but it was impossible. At some point, I stopped. Before I knew it...
I broke down with the happiest smile on my face.

Gunslinger Girl - It is nothing like it's first few chapters, name, and even synopsis make it out to be.
Annarasumanara - It's a Manhwa (Korean comic basically)
Himegoto - Juukyuusai no Seifuku - A story about gender and sexuality and abuse.
Shigurui - A hyper violent revenge samurai story built around a single duel.
Kokou no Hito Aka The Climber - I can't properly describe this.. But just read it, it's "about" mountain climbing.
Shimanami Tasogare (Our Dreams at Dusk) - Another story about the queer experience in Japan. A 10/10 story.

Since I’m getting a sense of what stories you enjoy in manga, I’ll recommend some that I’ve read:
    -Blue Period
    -Solanin
    -Vinland Saga
    -Monster
    -20th Century Boys
    -Vagabond
    -Land of the Lustrous
    -The Climber
I hope this helps on your manga journey and I’m excited to see what story you’ll read next

Kinda a shot in the dark, but Banana Fish is one of my favorite manga. It's very intense, but I recommend looking into it! It was written in the 80s and it really embodies that time period, I think. Also, naturally, I'd suggest you to check out Asano's other work! Particularly I would recommend Solanin. :)

I reccomend checking out A Bride's Story. It's a historical fiction manga that centers around multiple brides' stories in Central Asia in the 19th century. So far, there are 103 chapters as each new chapter is released bi-monthly.
Fair warning, the first couple of chapters may turn some readers off due to "a certain age gap in the first marriage". However, I suggest giving the first few chapters chance given the historical context around this marriage and the conflict that it brings. Hopefully, I have not discouraged you from reading A Bride's Story because of this fact.

Like you, this year was when I started really diving into Manga, and I also decided to pick up Punpun. I remember going through this thinking "Wow, that's fucked up" a few times, only for every page to make me feel like this. However, something that I thought was interesting was how it ended. Huge spoilers coming up, so if you want to read Punpun, do not read farther.
It was so interesting to me how even after all the messed up things that had happened to Punpun, he still ended up with a good life. He had a lot of trauma, had gone through something so horrific it would mess up anyone, had gone through hell in a handbasket... and yet at the end, he was in original Punpun form with his new family. To me, that is the greatest moment of the story. No matter how sad and hurt I was throughout, I still felt that light shine through all the story I read, even if it was a hell of a road to that moment.

i love punpun so much and this manga truly changed my life as i literally have a tattoo of it on my body! and i really liked your rambling about it and it is completely fine that you felt frustrated with how you couldn't go much into detail and unpack everything because it is certainly a lot.
if you need another great manga to read i would recommend these tree:
    1. monster by naoki urasawa
    2. my broken mariko by waka hirako
    3. homunculus by hideo yamamoto
monster is very personal to me, mainly because it takes place in europe (especially germany and in the city i study in) and the story overall is breathtaking and it has so many moral and philosophical elements and social commentary, it's incredibly good and one of my favourites.
my broken mariko is only one single volume and it's heartbreaking! i have probably read it 4 times already and cried every single time. it also has queer-coded elements with the characters and it's overall really heartbreaking but also heartwarming.
lastly homunculus. this one is very tricky because i still dont quite get it actually but it still left a big impact on me. it is grotesque and gory and has very serious and disturbing elements to it but you will not be able to put it down! i actually just would like to know how you react to it and your opinion and interpretation overall because it also has very interesting philosophical questions and it goes a little into metaphysics and stuff.
that's it, thanks for the video! it was a great watch and i hope you will read more manga, since there is a lot of good stuff out there!

It's been like 8 or 9 years since I read this series back when I was in high school and I only recently bought the entire omnibus collection to revisit it again. Definitely one of the best things I think the medium has to offer and one of my all time favorites with vagabond and berserk. Asano is one of the authors I think who's really trying to infuse literary merit into manga and he's really effective at it. Punpun is his magnum opus thus far, but I think you see the extremely human and powerful style he has throughout his works and I think it sort of legitimizes the medium in a way that there's someone like him who takes it so seriously

Speaking of which, If you want to buy a physical manga again, use rightstuf anime. All their mangas are discounted, and you can save a lot of money if you buy a big haul. (The reason I bought punpun just now was because there was a sale where it cost me around 120 bucks total)
For recommendations, I haven’t read too much manga, but 2 I’ve been reading and enjoying are:
-Tokyo ghoul: a fantasy series that’s really interesting so far. The world and action is really cool and I can’t wait to see where it goes.
-blue period: a drama/coming of age series about a protagonist about a character finding passion in art. I’ve read the beginning, and was immediatley captivated by it.

As someone who has never read a manga, I found this video absolutely fascinating. I totally resonate with your comments about not understanding certain elements of the story - I've found that often, books with confusing or inscrutable elements end up living in my mind for much longer, gnawing away at my brain until I am in a place to confront or revisit them. The best fiction gives the reader questions, not answers. And I find that in revisiting a text with new eyes, I might find some answers - but always new questions as well. If reading is a dialogue, rereading is a conversation.
I don't have any manga to recommend, but I will recommend my beloved "Madame Bovary" - a conversation I keep returning to and seeing anew.

I recommend Beastars by Paru Itagaki :) another dark human drama (with animals). And Vagabond, but I'm sure that's on your list already.
Also, I think it's interesting to read Solanin, the manga Asano wrote before Punpun. Much of Punpun is kind of an attack on that type of feel-good story that Solanin was (though it's still plenty sad, haha). The manga Sachi writes while Punpun is off on the murder roadtrip is literally Solanin--you can see it in the scene where Punpun encounters this guy talking shit about it. Asano is very metafictional in all his work, and cynical about the manga industry as a whole.

I'm glad you liked it that much.
Even tho it's a small and insignificant portion of the story, my favourite part, the one that resonated with me the most was when Punpun started to live alone and his days were all boring and...alone. Sad and alone with his thoughts in his apartment. The silence only broken by the...ehm sounds of his neighbours.
I don't know why, but that made me change my way of living, even tho I wasn't living a life nearly that bad
Anyway, as others have said, you'll probably like Dead Dead Demon's dededede Destruciton by Asano too

Perfect timing for this video to pop in my feed since I finished reading Punpun yesterday. I’m actually really disappointed I didn’t like it seeing as it’s so highly praised, but I’m glad I finally read it, and it’s nice seeing the perspective of someone who enjoyed it. Plus now I don’t have to get the expensive omnibus editions. I think I might have actually liked it more if I had read it when I was a depressed teenager, lol. There’s a manga called Onani Master Kurosawa that’s pretty similar to PunPun, I used to love it but upon rereading recently it I realized while I still like it, it didn’t really hit the same. Maybe I’ve just grown out of it lol. Idk.
As for recommendations; I know you’re going to choose the most popular ones but I still want to give my personal picks. Fullmetal Alchemist is my highest, the story and characters are amazing. It’s about two brothers performing an alchemy experiment to bring back their dead mother, but it goes wrong and they lose their limbs/bodies in the process. The main plot is focused on them trying to get their original bodies back. I haven’t actually read the manga yet but the anime is phenomenal (Brotherhood, which follows the manga) so I just have to recommend this absolute classic.
Another one is Death Note. I’m really shocked hardly anyone recommended this, esp in your first manga video. It’s an amazing psychological thriller and a must read/watch. I recently picked up the beautiful Black Editions and will be reading it for the first time after being a fan of the anime for 10 yrs (I’m late, I know.) Personally I’d say it should be anyone’s first manga/anime but I’m a little biased.
Also I’ve not seen anyone say Mob Psycho 100 yet, the art is a bit mediocre at times but it’s kind of charming and it has a great story and characters. It’s about a kid with psychic powers working for a con artist who pretends to have them. It’s funny at times but can also be heart wrenching, I suggest giving it a try.
If you’re into horror definitely check out Junji Ito. Uzumaki is my favourite work of his but most of them are amazing tbh.
If you’re looking for shorter manga, the single volume All You Need is Kill is great if you love scifi and time loop stories. Takopii’s Original Sin is one similar to Punpun, fair warning though it made me cry. Look Back is also great, even if you didn’t enjoy Chainsaw Man, Fujimoto just has that great ability to create gut-punching stories.
These manga videos are super fun to watch, it’s interesting seeing a newcomer’s perspective. Keep it up :)
P.S Have you watched any anime?
PPS. You may not need it since you haven’t read much manga yet, but the site MyAnimeList is good for keeping track of manga you’ve read or want to read. Don’t be fooled by the name, it has a dedicated manga section too.
Sorry for the absurdly long comment lol

I literally finished this series a couple of days ago. People say this series is depressing and I think the process of reading can be. It pretty much reminds you of every painful memory you hold, at least it did for me. The story spirals into absurdity to the point where I felt like the last two volumes were almost completely allegorical, so whatever you take from it, is what it is I guess. When I finished it I felt some kind of new appreciation for life.
It was a beautiful (dark) story, I fully agree. I'd recommend '''The man without talent'' - by Yoshiharu Tsuge, it's a stand-alone and the title spoke to me. It's about a middle-aged man/dreamer with a family, and he loses his drive for his passion and consequently takes on entrepreneurship of self-made jobs that make zero sense.

Yooooo i love your video soooo much!!!!!! There's nothing like punpun out there, still one of if not THE best manga I've ever read.
Maybe my circumstances make me bias towards it because i read this when my parents divorced without telling me anything, and when i told my ex about it she just brush it off. I decided to read this because the MC looks cute and i need something to distract myself. oooh boy how wrong i am.
This manga made me dig a deeper hole towards depression to the point of i need to stop reading midway for a week and recollect to stop myself doing anything stupid because i can relate to some of the story beats. But at the same time, this manga gave me strength to come out of that hole i dug myself, and saved me from depression.
The other thing i want to mention is i disagree about punpun living is a happy ending. The way i see it, the last thing punpun wants is keep on living, but because from the starts punpun keep shaping himself from his surroundings, in the end he form himself by his people around him wanted him to keep on living. Being dead is the only thing that can give him solace and peace. He keeps on living is a torture, eternal hell, not the happy ending it seems to be. But hey at least that's how i feel and it's good to see someone with different opinions.
I hope you read this comments haha 😂

First off, GREAT VIDEO. I love your points and i can’t wait to see you dive deeper into it at a later date.
Judging from the comments and your taste and videos recently here’s a list combining the two along with my reccomendations:
1.) GTO- Your current choice right now and honestly a superb one, you’ll enjoy this a lot
2.) Urasawa Work: (Monster/20th Century Boys)- Urasawa’s mystery/thriller writing is master class, theres an argument to be had for it being close to the best. The main antagonist, Johan in Monster, is compared to Griffith along with others as the best antagonist’s in manga. 20th Century boys has the same level of depth but in a grander scale and I personally like Monster as a story more, but 20th Century Boys for Friend.
3.) Vagabond- This is to completely the trifecta of “The classic sadboy seinen of Berserk/Vagabond/Punpun” The art alone is what makes this great but thematically it’s an excellent read too
4.) Vinland Saga- Great twist on a manga right now. I won’t say too much about it because it’s ongoing, but it’s absolety stellar with the art as well. Great characters, with great arc, and great storytelling. Definitely pick this up.
Thanks to everyone for the reccomendations. I definitely got some from your comments and I hope you all have good reads and a good life ahead.

It’s a nice contrast from the realistic goodnight pun pun and berserk art style, and it’s a shorter read

I need you to read Vagabond. There's something magical about it that's just stuck with me for years and who doesn't love a badass samurai?

Also, what's funny is you pronounced Aiko perfectly every time, but Punpun is pronounced "Poon poon."

I'm writing a 4000 word essay for school comparing how Oyasumi Punpun and Catcher in the Rye explore Loss of Innocence and Adulthood through their protagonists. My draft is due tomorrow and I've been struggling to work on it, but your video has given me a burst of motivation.

I just started reading this series (Its okay I dont mind spoilers) and I was just so invested in the first volume. I was so confused and out load so many times said “wtf” because of the portrayal of adults.
My recommendations are a bit varied but I think everyone should give them a shot.
    1. Bakuman - Same creators as death note about two boys who become manga creators in shonen jump. Every arc is their struggle in the industry to tackle a different series. Its a FANTASTIC way to show how hard writing for the medium actually is.
    2. Vinland Saga - The obvious pick. I read this series alot this year and it became my favorite over time. Great depiction of both historical fiction, the use of the theme of war and overall another unbelievable coming of age story that isn’t afraid to take risks in order to tell the story.
    3. Silent Voice - shortest series out of the three and the most grounded in reality. Coming of age story again about a deaf girl and the boy that used to be her bully. Great visuals really highlight the way the main character views the world and the people around him. Very relatable especially to those that aren’t too out going or think the best of people.

I had a mini panic attack reading the last part, I was so invested in the story. Punpun's dream was depressing as fuck, I cried like a little girl, Aiko deserved better.

Even though Punpun's adulthood was shown kinda bleak, my favourite part of the manga was the relationships he made when he grown up, not only because I feel like I've met those kind of people in real life, but also I personally can relate the way he interacts with them and how those relationships goes through hardships and despite that, they stay alive

Ok, I just literally finished reading this right now, and let me tell you if you're suffering from depression thinking about suicide don't you matter this story was hard to put down all the facial expressions all the heart that went into this is what I needed to think positively about my life it's always hard but those days will pass I connected with pun pun alot in this story from his obsession with his childhood love something that hit me right in the feels cause I too suffer(ed) from that it sucks that some people you love will move on and have lives meanwhile your stuck in the past and thinking of what if ands or buts I've been thinking like that for a long time but I think this great manga helped me out this is a read for letting things go and speak up to the ones you love tell them how you feel hug your loves one's because like the shooting stars that they see as kids will fade like you and me this is a eye opener thanks to the author some people might not like this story but for the struggling this is a way to think of how life really is beautiful and that things go on weather you deal with your problems or don't if
And to whoever is reading this, you're NEVER ALONE. THERE IS HELP AND PEOPLE OUT THERE THAT CARE ABOUT YOU. DONT BE A SHUT IN !!! I HOPE YOU FIND WHAT YOUR LOOKING FOR IN LIFE AND FIND PEOPLE TO CARE ABOUT

The first time I read Punpun when I was 15 years old. It's been 5 years now, I re-read the story once a year. And each time reading it like a new psychological experience. You know, this is a backstory that what we get out of it depends on our soul, age, enlightenment and maturity.

"Skip and Loafer" is great story about empathy, understanding and the character reactions to ones own feelings!
Also much, much lighter story compared to Punpun loll

    THANK YOU!
    I really appreciate your content.
I started my manga journey just as you did for the most part. I got Kaiju 8, Dorohedoro, Blame, Vinland Saga, and MadK.
I found you by searching for reviews on Kaiju #8 just a week after reading it.
It is an ok Manga, but I knew there had to be deeper and more meaningful stories out there.
I have spoiled this story for myself through TH-cam.
But I'm purchasing the physical manga ASAP!
I can't express in adequate term's, but I feel so much love for PunPun. The dude just wanted to make everyone happy.
    Until it broke him.
The author brings to light the reality that most people don't want to address. Lots of people do have to live with depression and poor mental health. The story is brave and bold. I worry that I may bre slightly obsessed for the moment haha
