Blackberry phones were more secure than iphones and Android phones. Because of this fact certain countries didn't even allow people to enter the country with a Blackberry device.

Fun fact: the picture you tried to show of Waterloo? That's a picture of Kitchener. I used to shop at that Woolco. That is the Fairview park mall, in Kitchener, about 30 minutes away from Waterloo (if you take King Street). It is in Waterloo county though.
When Walmart purchased all of Woolco a few years after this picture was taken, that exact lot became a Walmart and it is still a Walmart today.
And even more fun fact I worked at that Walmart, and all over the shelving and other units in the back there were dozens and dozens of Woolco price stickers still stuck to absolutely everything. It was just sort of neat to be there 20 years after the store changed and still see this little piece of history.

As someone who has worked with a lead developer from BB. The one thing you got wrong or your researchers got wrong by using Google ai the keyboard being “too slow to switch to touch screen”. Blackberry used its keyboard as its biggest selling point. In fact when it did create a touchscreen device it added a unique haptic feedback. Air between the glass and the digitizer that allowed a touch of the touch screen button to feel as it was being depressed (not just vibration. It felt as if you pushed down in that area) the designers and thinkers over at BB felt that the keyboard and its touch feedback was important, super important and they still hold that mentality today.. They are just VERY limited device wise and their devices target people who need security . There are still fortune 500 companies who use Blackberry and BBM software . Speaking of BBM that was also their selling point. They did list a lot because they didn’t create an App Store (that wouldn’t have help as we can see with palm pilots switching to WebOS and then adding an App Store with apps built using html and WebOS JS Applications which really limited their market abilities and games etc. (back then now we can create great games using html and js) and the palm failed. BB was concerned about the keyboard and BBM so much that they should have forgotten about both and adopted Android to compete. Had they done that they could still be making devices today and thier 4B security company could be much more including secure devices and localized SMS over BBM

Had a black pearl model blackberry, little mini computer was awesome. I never had any of the listed issues and the only reason I got rid of it was I had a free upgrade to a Garmin phone.

I started using them in 1999 as I upgraded my non-wireless PDA which I used only for saving phone numbers. When all the sudden I could text someone with it I started recommending to my university friends. That’s when I started and I made my own business simply because I had the luxury of writing people emails while I was not at home and didn’t stop using it till the iPhone was powerful enough to replace it around 2014. When they ended making phones with keyboards.

When iPhone came out, blackberry started to be popular in Indonesia in 2008. A lot of celebrities and rich people used this phone.
Until early 2012 when android replace its popularity.

They still make them. I am writing this message on one. The company Unihertz makes them. Only issue is some app incompatibility. The app works fine enough, but due to unusual screen shapes it will crop off some of the viewing area.

I remember when my dad had his old silver Blackberry that his old work gave him. I remember when I was a kid he would go into a store and if I didn't want to go in with him I would stay in the truck and play Snake on it. Fun times......

The problem is, the iphone had the exact same issues when it was launched. But the all touch screen design and the OS was really innovative.
And they did improve on it with the next devices by adding more innovation and more openness
