Lizard in a woman's skin is the only fulci movie I haven't seen,,another obsession for me that my budget won't allow right now is the giallo "the house with the laughing windows", I might just buy both,,as I haven't seen them to stream on any of my,,,(skin flint) free services😂....great review!!
Lizard in a Women's Skin is a real treasure. You are right to point out the amazing location photography that absolutely floors me every time I see it. I find Fulci 's 70s Giallo's his most interesting work. Don't Torture a Duckling and The Psychic are two other ones I like.
I'm very impressed with Umbrella, ViaVision, imprint, and Madman for what they have done for Australian (and other) films over the years. Many different genres as well, and lately so well presented.
Once again, I followed your lead and watched Lady, Stay Dead. It’s free right here in TH-cam. Pretty damn good and it’s surprising how uncensored it is on TH-cam.
For the giallo, you had me at Stanley Baker. You make an intriguing case for each of the others. I might see Crosstalk as part of a double bill, perhaps with 1988's Pulse. Thanks, Ter.
Hey Terry. The Raid - a film just by watching you feel exhausted. 😂 a top tier action film. I can’t/don’t double dip as I have the Mondo Macabro Lizards Skin which is an ace Giallo, personally my favorite Fulci Giallo is Don’t Torture a Duckling, Lizard Skin a close 2nd. Ozploitation Boxset I’m all in for that.
Terry, thank you for the primer on 10 BA, and how it jump-started the Australian film industry! Okay, most of the early work was Ozploitation, but Barry McKenzie had to crawl so that Peter Weir could walk and George Miller could run! Like! Hell!
There were a number of eras of Australian film. The early 1970s stuff was because the Labor government gave the industry a boost, then a later Labor gov gave it 10BA.
@@terrytalksmovies would we benefit from another 10BA type tax system or is there already something like that in place? also wondering if you have the time to give your attention to yet some more recent Aussie horror films that put women, and queer /trans folk up front. These are "So Vam", "Bad Girl Boogey" and "T-Blockers" all directed by Alice Maio Mackay... and "Sissy" co-written /directed by Hannah Barlow and Kane Senes.
Speaking of an abyss of terror. Australia has coffee flavored Doritos chips. If you dare Terry, if you dare. Shudder. This looks like a fun assortment, as I never saw them. Off beat, international and low budget, perfect. Thanks for the recommendations!
coffee flavored (gulp) Doritos? bleah!! on the other hand, i can see them now just infusing any Dorito with caffeine cos you know, whenever i want a pick me up i immediately think of a corn chip! lol !
@jackfriend4u mango salsa Dorito also nasty. A friend bought it to try. Hated it and threw it out. Some raccoons got into their garage...and would not eat it. Lol
@@captlazer5509 i swear the labs for these food companies sometimes just put a bunch of different ingredients on slips of paper into a hat and then pick them out randomly and think-"yeah we'll make that into something!". I saw ants actively walk around a dropped cupcake once!! mind, it had one small bite eaten out of it before someone had left it on the footpath, so I expect everyone from human to ants had found there to be something entirely disagreeable about it.
The Night Comes For Us may be more violent but the Raid is an almost perfect film in that it is in and and out in 90 minutes. I could not find one repeated stunt extra and I was definitely looking! The Raid 2 ads a bit too much to it and I have seen both back to back. Watching ROAR "that nice movie with the lions" was still more scary.
Here's a mad thought about LIZARD IN A WOMAN'S SKIN-what if Lucio Fulci started out to make a *krimi* (set in a London that only exists in the fevered imaginations of non-British thriller writers, Scotland Yard Inspector solving a complicated crime), but Lucio just had to Fulci, and ended up shooting all that weird sex and gory violence!
I repeat myself, "The Raid" is one of the best action movies ever made. Especially because it cost only $1.1 mil to make. Some scenes are not for the faint of heart. We had the same tax cutting law here till a few years ago. Without this, Uwe Boll would have never made a movie. The nudity thing is interesting. Starting with the 70's, Europe got very relaxed about it. Some movies from the 80's that got X rated in the USA, are rated 12 or even 6 here. As long as there is no hardcore inside, naked people are nothing that need to be hidden from kids. It also shows every Summer, we have a huge fountain nearby and parents let their up to 6 year old running naked through it. Nothing to see here. Violence was more a theme, movies like "To live and die in L.A." got a 18 rating, because the brutal scene at the start, were a cop got killed.
Yep. Censorship classifications are always determined by cultural gate-keepers. In this age of interwebs, they're a quaint anachronism. Any 12 year old can watch Salo or A Serbian Film with very little effort.
i really wish some savvy film maker in the 80's had actually used the title "10 BA" for an Ozploitation movie. i know I would have! the previous dvd release of Crosstalk (thru Umbrella?) is absolutely UNWATCHABLE...the sound quality is like they recorded it in an empty tin ice-cream tub and everyone who bought it should've been given their money back. it's as bad as the only available dvd copies of Michael Mann's "The Keep" which has no right to be on any shelf, except for suckers like me who were desperate to see it again, even if it was a completely shitty copy. I can only assume, given the outrageous price Umbrella are asking for that box set (3 films for over $160 bucks? who do they think the audience for this stuff is?!) that they've remastered the hell out of each film and the soundtracks have been given the very best treatment possible.
It wasn't $160 it was $109.95. And yes all three films look flawless especially Crosstalk it looks absolutely fantastic and are in the proper aspect ratio and not cropped and all 3 films have cool extras, im so happy I got this set I really enjoyed it.
@@dollyrawlins5470 its was $160 when i first saw it on Amazon but I think I eventually got it off that site (or maybe JB HiFi?) for under a hundred so i was a happy camper and you're right Crosstalk looks/sounds sensational- as fresh as they day it was made. now i gotta give some time to the other two from that box set.
I didn't rate Gangs of London. The story would be difficult to pull of even by an experienced director. It punishes you for trying to "binge" it and is already re-using stuff from the Raid.
Curious as to why they used the Schizoid art for this edition. It's a good picture, but I don't recall it having much if anything to do with the film itself. The Raid is phenomenal. I think it's the only film I've ever seen where I wanted to see a sequel to it before I'd finished watching the first one. I was terribly disappointed when Evans said he wouldn't be doing a third one. Going to have to invest in that Ozploitation box. I remember reading years ago that so much Australian cinema from that time was tied up in rights and ownership legalities that the likelihood of most of it ever being rereleased was minimal. Pleased to see at least some stuff from that time is getting back out there in evidently good shape.

Thanks! Giallo is an interesting rabbit hole to explore. Vivid, slightly surrealistic, lots of pretty people. Nothing to not like there.

Don't Torture A Duckling is definitely something special.
I'm very impressed with Umbrella, ViaVision, imprint, and Madman for what they have done for Australian (and other) films over the years. Many different genres as well, and lately so well presented.
We're so lucky to have interesting distributors here.

Wow, that is surprising.

My pleasure, William. I love this month's Umbrella releases. They're in my movie sweet spot.
Cool stuff, no idea how I'm going to find this stuff relatively cheaply. Going to drive me mad
Unfortunately, the prices don't fluctuate much and on the resale market, they often skyrocket in price.

The Ozploitation Rarities box set came out of nowhere and it's rock solid.

Yep. The Raid is still the GOAT of Indonesian action cinema, though The Night Comes For Us is worth checking out, too.
love the ending, was that Luna? I never noticed before that she is a calico, or is that a new cat?
That's Luna, Juan. She was cuddling because it's cold.

Fulci did a great job of giving us a weirdly Italian London.

Similar stories in Canada, corrupt government funds accidentally led to some real fun cinema.
Not so much a corrupt government but unintended consequences of an attempt to boost Australian cinema culture.
Comparing John Wick to the Raid is like comparing the Aquanauts to 20,000 Leagues Beneath the Sea.
I didn't compare them, I said The Raid influenced the style of John Wick. 😀
I appreciate. I mean, I enjoy John Wick, but the Raid is just a whole 'nother level. 😅
A Lizard In A Woman's Skin is a great Giallo. It has it all: sex, murder and madness.
It is. Top 10 Giallo.

Good choice! The Ozploitation Rarities Volume One really works as a compilation.
