Bernardo Bertolucci discusses his film Il conformista (Italy 1970). Excerpt from Bernardo Bertolucci: What Is the Purpose of Cinema? (Italy 2002, Sandro Lai).
Bertolucci says in the interview that he specifically gave his interpretations of the events shown in the Conformist, therefore how can you say that the movie is great while the director is so pompous? We're talking about cinema as a form of art here, it's a given that the directors will make introspective comments, and the second part of the video shows such a vulnerable side of Bertolucci that it made my esteem toward him skyrocket. The fact he's legitimately concerned about young people from different countries being able to approach his films is a wonderful quality.
I have watched The Conformist about 50 times.
The movie is one of my favorite movies of all time.
A genius of film and a genius of a man.
Meraviglioso! Grazie per condividere.
Una buena pelicula en gran parte por la buena trama de Alberto Moravia.
A great film. Do not pay a lot of attention to Bertolucci’s pompous comments.
