WALKING THE KENT COAST | PART 1: DARTFORD TO GRAVESEND

  • IT HAS BEGUN! My epic project to walk (and at times wild camp) the entire Kent Coast, starting off with Dartford to Gravesend (roughly 13 miles I think). I completed this first section with Candice and we ended up walking half of it in the dark but it was great fun nonetheless and I cannot wait to do the next section, Gravesend to Rochester via the entire Hoo Peninsula (some 35 miles).

      cheers Lorraine, can't wait for the next section which I'm hoping your lovely son can join me on lol. He really took care of Matt on Saturday night, helped him with his tarp and when it collapsed at 3.30am in the storm, he even let him sleep under his own tarp with him. You've raised a fine human being there!

    Great vlog tom. Takes me back to the late 80s. I used to tow barges as an apprentice lighter man up to the mill at the top of the creek loaded with grain and bring the empty barges back down in a tug called the charlight.

    Kudos to Candice, she looked knackered on the train. I wasn't aware Pocahontas visited the UK. It's been many years since a woman hovered over me I'll tell yer. Shame it's a statue, or I'd have paid her a visit lol. Nice educational trip, I enjoyed it thanks to you both.

    Well done both of you X Probably looked better in the dark, the lights along the water looked really nice X In some nicer areas and earlier you could have stopped a bit more for a brew up X Glad Candice is ok maybe some new walking shoes could help and carry less on your back on just a walk X Take Care of each other and Stay Safe X

    Hi Tom. Congratulations to you and Candice for completing the first part of your walk, and respect for walking through Northfleet at that time of night! Two innocents abroad!
    You mentioned that you would like to do a history of Gravesend vlog as part of this Kent Coast Walk project. If you want a better source than the official, Gravesham Borough Council handouts, including some of the murkier background stories, then I would recommend getting in touch with Christoph Bull. He is a local historian and does walks and talks all over North West Kent, from Dartford to the Hoo Peninsula. He has got endless anecdotes about Gravesend and the riverside along which you will be walking - without a doubt better than any guidebook.
    Anyway, I was chatting to him a couple of days ago and mentioned your epic journey. He would be happy if you wanted to drop him an email for a chat about the local history. This is his website: www.christophbull.co.uk/
    We will enjoy following your adventures into 2020.
    Happy New Year!

      Good luck with the weekend. Wondered if the Tilbury / Gravesend ferry would save you the train or car journeys to get over here?

      thinking of doing it as a dramatic opener lol. arrive by boat lol.

    • @wooway6278
      @wooway6278 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good idea!
      Not only the drama of salty sailor Tom, making landfall and rolling ashore after his voyages on the briny deep, but also some great long shots of places that you could be visiting later.
      General Gordon's fort; St George's church, with the Pocahontas statue where you finished the first leg of your walk; Windmill Hill, from which you can see deep into Essex; the red LV21 lightship; the Clarendon Hotel, where I believe a scene from Eastenders with Dot Cotton was filmed; and the Trinty House/Port of London Authroity building and pier from which the dock and river pilots go out to guide the big container ships up and down the Thames.
      It'll be a great video!
