    I love how you use mind tactics against your enemy both as a distraction and to de moralize them. Make them have a false sense of comfort before dismembering them and crushing their hopes and dreams. And when you play it feels like I'm watching a very elaborate chess game. It puts you on the edge of your seat and wanting more. Thanks for switching back to rome total war!

      +Samuel Long That's what everybody says but whenever I go back to look at Rise of An Empire, it looks better and better each time. I still don't think it's quite as good as the first 300, but it's really good to me.

    I really dont get it. You wrecked your cav for little gain and ended up cutting it close anyway by the end. Your troops were individually superiour to your enemies yet you still failed to make proper use of them. Your infantry was of little use to you throughout the entire battle. Hiding is all well and good but there are times where it is better to show your hand. drawing out the enemy infantry early would have allowed you to expose the archers to fresher cav instead of chewing them up early.
    Killing off the enemy cav was good but you should have pulled back after that then pushed your infantry into the open. Cav superiority trumps archers everytime. Your infantry wasnt going to take much damage anyway from missile fire. Preserving your cav for later would have served you better and lended you a much easier win.

    Gotta love the mechanics of the total war series especially the early ones.I once used just two militia hoplites in a city defense.The scipii attacked me and with their unit composition,they were supposed to win but I used my militia hoplites and put them in places where the enemy were more likely to come in.Since the AI is stupid meaning it just sends small number of units at me.The pointy end always does the trick.

    if you were commanding the Romans, what do you think you would have done in this situation?

    • @pokefan68
      @pokefan68 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Me personally, I would've made as small a square as possible, put fire arrows on, and keep triarii and equites in reserve to counter any charges. I'd keep one archer from firing for the hoplites.

    • @manofwealthandtaste136
      @manofwealthandtaste136 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd form a small squarewith the Triarii and principes mutually supporting each other, with the archers in the middle, not firing. The cav can dash themselves to death on the Triarii, then I could space into a battle line to counter the phalanx with my archers.
      Alternatively, I could have made a front line of principes with the archers behind them and covered by principes at the front flanks, and had a couple of Triarii behind the front principes, and the rest covering the sides. The principes would be ready to fight with the Triarii ready to defend against cav, while the archers are ready to shoot at the phalanx.
      Another strategy would be the above method, but with the Triarii forming screens instead of staying with the formation, but they'd have to stay close or they'd be flanked.

    Just out of interest, how did routing work when it actually happened in battles? What I mean is, did units actually rout and then maybe return to the field to die a glorious death in battle instead or did they just run away hoping not to get caught/ killed etc? Just wondered if youd read any strange history on routing units lol

    • @PrinceofMacedon
      @PrinceofMacedon  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Adam2kk35 routing was typically a disaster for armies. Most of their casualties happened during that phase. Armies without major cavalry arms had a harder time doing it. But then you had armies like Alexander's whose cavalry was pretty excellent. In one instance, he spent almost an entire night chasing the routing Scythians (he eventually gave up because had drunk some bad water beforehand). Sometimes, routing armies could be rallied back into fighting for the cause. And then you had more experienced troops (like the Silver Shields) who could rout in an organized manner (still fighting off the enemy)

    • @Adam2kk35
      @Adam2kk35 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those different points make a lot of sense haha The organised rout seems a lot more logical to me, why armies woldn't have had that in place idk

      for the greeks: militia hoplites < hoplites < armored hoplites < spartans

      but the value of armored hoplites are better for the money and gold/gold armored hoplites should beat spartans.

    Alexander the great of Macedon and king Pyrrhus of Epirus are my favorite ancient Hellenistic generals.

    • @Canucklug
      @Canucklug 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it's really interesting that Hannibal ranked Pyrrhus second to Alexander as a general when so few people now think of them as equals.
      I like Epaminondas, the Theban who crushed the Spartans with an echelon attack that was possibly the first time it was used by a Greek.

      Miratesus cav was powerful in real life as are phalanx's from the front, getting hit by roman pila and getting shot in the arse by archers

      ***** cav was almost useless before the formations were broken up.
