Did he say he joined a gang? Smh...I had a rough childhood....especially in high school, but I was never a criminal. People think folks in gangs are heartless killers, b UT talk to their family and friends and they see that person in a different light. When I was in school...the junior black mafia was running rampant in Philly, but one of them was my best friend. I wanted to join cause I was a angry kid but I wasn't hood at all...grew up in uptown Philly. I asked him to get me in and his response was...for what? To get yourself killed...he said anymore mention of it and he's going to tell my dad. I was terrified of my pops so I left it alone...6 months later he died in jail. Yes people saw him as a piece of shit, but he saved my life. I was dead serious about joining. Now at age 45...I'm so glad he did what he did. I to this day am close with his family. I looked after them like he looked after me.

I wish I could have saved his life...the best thing I can do is look out for his family. I did exactly that. I will always honor him.

Its good to have friends like gilbert. Though incidents like this can turn serious these types of friends can help you built thick skin. You need all types of friends but friends like gilbert as far as male friends goes can be good as long as they have their limits of pushing you and your back. As fsr as him serving 23 years is something we need to work on as a culture. It easier to change the few in a culture who dont go astray, but when a culture embraces too much negativity in life you have people like him who had talent, but he wasnt mentally tough enough not to go astray. Not judging him, but as much as people want to say we are adults at the end of the day having a culture that live by a positive code is important to help more lost minds wakeup, because there is always more sheep in a society than leaders.
