I enjoyed this vlog, especially the parts on the road :) I just ordered the book. I love the idea of having short motivating essays to get you going. I have to get a lot of things done in the next months and it often makes me panic, because it seems all so big and daunting. Being consistent and just accepting that the process takes time and instead of looking for shortcuts, just focusing and working on it every day.. this is the kind of energy I need and I hope this can help me, not only with creative projects. On the creative side, I would love to develop a routine with a bit of writing every day. Considering all my other tasks, 1000 words might be a bit much, but maybe I can try with 500 and see where this gets me. I am at a bit of a cross roads in my career and it would be nice to have the writing as something that can ground me every day through the stressful times, changes and uncertainty.
I believe she also did a 500 word scene per day as a different challenge. Don’t remember title of video. 1 scene per day, to get you to a fast draft. I’m going to try both.
I’ve been watching through your videos today getting back into the Writing Mood after a mental health slump and then just saw you uploaded again! Can’t wait to see this experiment unfold. 🙌
I just did this. But not because of a boot camp. It's actually something I decided to do when I realized that I've neglected so many of my stories that I've started writing for several years now. And yes, I won't stop for the day until I reached 1,000 words or more. I started this challenge for myself last month (July 27, 2024) and I've managed to continue doing it. Of course, I focused on one story for two weeks and yesterday, I decided to add two stories to the challenge. Since I managed to write (or rather, typed) 1,000 words in 1 hour (blame the time crunch since I need to reach that quota before my time limit), I intended to do the same to the other ones. It's amazing that I see you do this and saw this video posted about what I had just done for more than two weeks already! Thank you for your video, you just made me realize that I made the right decision with my writings by continuing to do this daily challenge. Thank you for always being an inspiration to me even though I had neglected my writings for a long time. 😊💕✌️👍
Voice to text can save my entire word count for the day. And I can do it in bed! if I'm awake. I remind myself that all first drafts are messy so going through it and cleaning it up feels much easier now. So happy to see a new video!!! "Not that big a challenge???" Much better than a 10K weekend and then not wanting to work for ten more days. :) Love you!!!
Ahhh, that’s such a great point!! I really did enjoy the process of looking over the words again as I cleaned them up. Sometimes I’d add in an extra sentence or too! Like a fun, bonus pass.
Welcome to my neck of the woods! Glad Columbus treated you nicely! Hope your brother likes his time in Ohio! This experiment sounds interesting! Might try it out!
Ahhh! I absolutely loved Columbus, I’m excited to have another reason to explore the city and Ohio more! It’s so pretty. Thank you and please let me know if you do!!
I would have loved to have done this if I was focusing on word count as progress this year, its sounds like my type of challenge! Love how you combined different methods while doing this. Every writer is different, and cherry picking to make something work better for you is a fab idea
I love the idea of having a bootcamp with a smaller and much more manageable challenge such as 1K words a day. As someone who's generally a binge writer and tends to go days, weeks, months without writing a word only to write 50K+ over a few days, this would ABSOLUTELY be a challenge for me, and now I want to try it, combining it with Sarra Cannon's "don't break the chain" idea, seeing how many days in a row I can go hitting that 1K goal. Hmmm... Ideas...
The voice to text is a weird way that I outline while walking my dogs. Fun if not always accurate. Love these videos! Thanks for keeping me inspired to keep working on my story
I dont comment very often, but im making more of an effort to interact with the creators that are meaningful in my life. You're definitely one of them! Thank you for your vlogs, they feel like hanging out with an old friend. That being said, I love the 1000 words a day idea. Its much more sustainable than the other challenges you've done in the past, as you pointed out.
I knew there was a reason why I aimed for 1000 a day - sometimes I get more and it’s amazing, sometimes the 1000 is a struggle but it’s still rewarding to see the progress
I use dictation all the time. After having the phone mess up enough that I don't even remember what I said, I now record myself on a video and then I will play that into my computer dictation so that I can watch it type and fix it as it goes. I do not use voice notes, however, because I had a 15 minute voice note get eaten by my phone. it had been a major breakthrough on a completely blocked story, and I was devastated.
I've been sick in bed all day with a migraine so I've watched this video like 3+ times and kept falling asleep because of my pain meds kicking in. I was finally able to watch all the way though it! At almost 1am. This definitely gave me a few ideas for my news letter. Definitely should pick up this book if I can!
Awww, I’m so sorry, Hero! That sucks. :( Hopefully the migraine and symptoms subside soon. Definitely pick it up! I’m intrigued to hear/read what ideas it gave you for your newsletter!!
Kate, I think the speech to text is a lot better than when I tried it years ago, but one thing that helped it better decipher my words a little bit was getting a little microphone that I could clip to my shirt, nearer my face, while I was talking
That was when my partner was watching!! We are now rewatching so I can catch up (no writing for me then, I gotta focus on the laughs and la familia bahaha).
Super valuable video, thank you for documenting the process! Since the fall from grace that Nanowrimo suffered this year, I've been on the lookout for another group challenge like 1000 Words of Summer. I'll be participating next year for sure!!
Oh shooot, I totally missed this chance this yar, since I already used all of my PTO, but I am putting this book into my amazon wishlist and I will sure be coming back to it. 1k per day? That seems like a nice pace, to push myslef, but not so un-mantainable, like NANOWRIMO with its almost 1800 words per day. 1k? that should be managable for me! Nice vlog Kate, I enjoyed the vlog - the on the road bits, the bits with the voice-to text convertion, because I do struggle with it too sometimes :D
This is such a great idea! I used to love writing but have dropped off, but I think setting a goal for 500 words a day would be great to get me started again! 💜 Also, I LOVED that light purple Scooby-Doo shirt during the first dictation drive! So cute!
I really enjoyed this...I found it 2 wks after the fact but it really resonated with me. I have seven children, whom I am blessed to homeschool, and my work schedule is crazy. I work full time during the summer so I haven't been able to get any writing done. I am currently down and out from foot surgery so I am going to get myself going on the next book in my series. I'm going to see about doing this as I get more energy back. Start smaller and go from there. Definitely want to have the juices flowing for NANOWRIMO
Ive been having a bad slump in my writing and I remember you did this challenge where you would write 500 words and then move on with the fast draft. Let me tell you that has helped me so much! ❤🎉
Dang it. My neck of the woods! Columbus book scene is the best. Bookloft is like the Winchester Mystery House of books...you know...without the ghosts and murder.
I didn't realize there were so many bookstores around Columbus! Only went to the Book Loft. :) I am outside of Cincinnati, so I guess I need a road trip!
The book sounds awesome. I love essays that give some motivation and give some inspiration. I wrote one week almost 2000 words a day in different projects. I read The last draft a few weeks ago and there are afew things I want to use of it. Thanks for the video!
I love everything about this! 1000 words of Summer has helped me a lot, I've done it with the group and also on my own a few times. Also the book is excellent, I listened to the audiobook on Spotify but I will be grabbing the hardcover because I'm been making a ritual out of reading an essay or two first thing in the morning.
Yesssss, I love that! The letters/essays are really so nice, quick, and pack such a feel-good punch. I’m happy to hear that doing it with the group has been wonderful too. Excited to join y’all next year!!
You'll be in my neck of the woods :D Come visit Zoar if you have the time. My descendants came here from Germany in the 1800's, beautiful little village! Guided tours too. My aunt Hilda wrote 'The Zoar Story' and it's still sold at the Zoar Store. :D
Holy heck i wish i had known that you were going to be in Columbus Ohio i would have come and said high that is my hometown!!! Anyways what is that bookstore that you were in i didn't recognoize (the first one) it wow. I hope you had a good time in my city though! i hae been to the book loft more then two dozen times i have been doing writing challenges of my own all summer hit 50,000 words every summer month just to see if i could do it so far i got 55,000 for the month of June, 52,000 for the month of jJuly and here we are in August and so far i have 29,000 words. It helped that i did a 10k word day the other day and it boosted my words up a lot great video
I have rewritten this comment several times in the interest of not coming across as facetious. One thousand words a day is a brilliant target to aim for, but if you don't feel that you want to write one thousand words a day then you really don't have to do it. No one is forcing anyone to write, you have to want to do it. No amount of taking courses or reading books will do the writing for you. Just write to the best of your ability and don't force yourself to do it. No one will mind if you don't write.
I did open my mystery book and it WAS The Magicians!! Bahaha. I read it so long ago, pre-show, and really enjoyed the first half and then felt like it fell off. I am curious to revisit it though so it works out. The book stores were Gramercy Books, Birdie Books, Storyline Bookshop, and then the Book Loft of German Village. I’d recommend them all!!
Hi Kate. Could you do the Livestreams even here on TH-cam, please? I can't afford to pay for the patreon and I loved your Livestreams when you did them here. Please!
Kate respectfully, the keyboard b roll is a little too loud. I turn up the volume way up cause I want to hear you speaking then CLACK CLACK CLACKITY CLACK CLACK CLACK. ❤❤❤
Thank you, that’s good to know!! I edit without headphones (because mine don’t sync correctly so they’re ~half a second off the visual part) and I’ve always wondered if it’s an issue.
I enjoyed this vlog, especially the parts on the road :)

I have never heard of this challenge. But now I'm intrigued.

I love this tip because, yeah, when the dictation fails it feels so bad 😢
Feels like the voice equivalent of losing the USB stick you have your WIPs on, not that I’m speaking from experience or anything 😆👀

Never stop blowing up! I couldn't imagine focusing on writing while watching along; incredible work XD

FLOOFY KITTY!
Her name is Abba and she loves love bahaha. Immediately starts purring, so sweet.

At 34.38 I thought huh that looks an awful lot like Jess's dog and then lo and behold lol :D
THE SWEETEST ANIMALS FOR REAL. (And Jess is great too, obviously, lolol.)
I didn't realize there were so many bookstores around Columbus! Only went to the Book Loft. :) I am outside of Cincinnati, so I guess I need a road trip!

I found the book on everand. Might give me the kick I need to start writing again.
I've been participating in the 1000 words of summer challenge the last couple of years. I don't always make it to 1000 a day, but I try.
Holy heck i wish i had known that you were going to be in Columbus Ohio i would have come and said high that is my hometown!!!

Hi all, at all of you using speech to text already - what software/app are you using? (Android users :)) greetings from Germany
I'm just using the colournote app already on my Google phone, then email it to myself and copy and paste into scriviner 😊

❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I’m glad you are back to writing. I just have one question: why limit yourself to 1k? Lol. 😂
Think it’s more about keeping a manageable pace
Just ordered the book. (I was only two minutes into the video. Lol)
Lolol!! I really enjoy it and hope you do too!!
How did I miss this video?
Kate respectfully, the keyboard b roll is a little too loud. I turn up the volume way up cause I want to hear you speaking then CLACK CLACK CLACKITY CLACK CLACK CLACK. ❤❤❤

The writing experiment was cool. The Olympics 🤮
1000 words of bad writing is as good as a blank page to me. Great writing is limited words with something to say behind it.
