The best part about this is that you see John having matured so much just because he lets Zane have his manic moments of interrupting or being the cooler and funnier guy. Old John would have found a way to circumvent this behavior of Zane with his sharp as ever wit and would have really dug into him. But he's so above all that now, i honestly love how he's grown. My favorite artist of all time, really.
Love this comment, its so great when (celeb or not) we can see the change, effort and evolution in others, and continue to celebrate this progression rather than focusing on a snapshot of them in time and confining their whole identity to that one moment, action or situation - we're all growing and John is such a great public example of how reflection and challenge can help you move forward to being a better version of you every day

This is the guy that created the "Born and Raised" album. 'Nuff said. Furthermore, I know John will never actually read this, but thank you for your candor and honesty, not only in the interview, but in your music throughout the years.
Zane always dives into the best places but I wish he allowed for people to go there with him in their own way and articulate themselves completely. He's done it with so many people I just would love to hear more of them than him speaking for or on top of them.
He is always so eloquent and self-aware, it's very refreshing

I am extremely self aware, but the truth is, it is a complete lie, because the mere fact that I think I am self aware makes it that I am not really self aware. There really are certain things about my personality I cannot see, which I think he cannot see himself as well too.

I feel you buddy. There are times in this interview I feel like John is being more like the host and he was the one steering the conversation back on track lol. Well we all know John is an excellent host and I love how much John was a good listener

This interview low-key is more important than a lot of people might think. So many different areas and audiences can be inspired, helped, mentored, etc.
Nice to see that John has come down from his past ego issues, and is now incredibly self aware. Keep making music my man, I’m really enjoying your art lately.
Everytime Zane speaks he walks away from the mic as if to say 'yeh check that sentence out that I just did'

New Light and most of the last album is not my cup of tea, but it really doesn't matter. John has an audience that loves him playing the blues/rock, an audience that digs his stuff with Dead & Co., an audience that loves his pop music, and an audience that loves his singer-songwriter stuff. I have mad respect for his success in so many different genre's of music. For 15 year old girls to 60 year old men, John has music for all of us. He is one of the most talented and unique artists of this generation in my humble opinion.

@@elftower907 I think it's mostly the first part. It's about how John's changed a little. John's stopped pandering to every single aspiration he has, and worked on refining what he's already doing. He keeps bringing up wanting to do coachella (ugh) but accepts the fact that it's one of those things he's got to do in another life because he's missed out on having the opportunity to do it that time in his life, if that makes sense.
The quote also is like a reminder of how John's said some unsavoury things in the past, and he's been spending the last 10 or so years trying to make up for that. Until now he's accepted the haters not really mattering, having moved on with their life and how he's not pressured to be seen as a hero or a role model. He tries his best to be his best self possible as often as he can, so he can hope anyone interested in him will find him through something notable he did and understand he's made some mistakes in his past, without going out of his way to reply to every nay-sayer on social media like he used to on Twitter.
If you watch from the 55:00 minute mark on this interview it'll make more sense.
He's so chill. The flow of this interview was very insightful.

I love John Mayer for so many reasons, but for today, my number one reason is his commitment to discovering and rediscovering what his truth is through music. Honestly - this guy is still so underrated for the musical genius he is. Second reason? His patience with this incredibly obnoxious interviewer. Ack!

It’s been such a buzz watching John move through stages in his life. I have closely followed John right from room for squares. His albums have been the soundtrack of my life.
I admire his ability to be so aware of his situations and stage of life. He has bared all so we could enjoy his creative genius. I absolutely cant wait for the next record.

I used to intern for a radio station called Clear Channel 104.5 Most of them are unbearable to listen to. This why the members of Tool hate interviews, no one listens, talks over them, and all about themselves.
Go watch his other stuff. Zane Lowe is maybe the greatest musical interviewer on this planet currently, and I will not stand for such slander. He has the best, most insightful, actually meaningful questions of any person out there.

A lot of you guys are complaining about them talking over each other but I feel like that's how creative people talk to each other, especially when they are having a good conversation. Also, "sunlight beating on the corner of the wall and im a mr. know it all" will be stuck in my head for a very long time now. I really wish that was a song
ashley778909 haha what on Earth? I've been a drummer for 10 years in plenty of bands. The ones that always over talk are narcissistic, super insecure, or just plain rude. I hate people over talking me. My band now communicate like adults I go, you go, I go, you go.

Makes me so happy to be reminded that there are people like John. The 'not afraid' deep thinker who is able to verbalise and articulate all that goes on in his head with the ever evolving message of what it is to be a well rounded, self aware yet always learning human being

sigge ek I thought the same thing. It was unsettling. There were a lot of moments where he wouldn’t let John finish his train of thought and it started to make me anxious haha.
I found it fine. It felt more of two mates having a deep chat than an interview. There were many moments that Zane interrupted because they were 110% both on the same wavelength that they could finish each other's sentences
I saw Dead & Co in 2016 NYC at Citi Field and i got to say that was a great show. I knew John was a blues student and he rips well but to see him with Bob, Mickey, Bill and Co was truly a great great time. Good interview.

If Zane calmed down it would. If you are ok with listening to Zane interrupt John 100 times, you will see the genius of John Mayer. The guy has become so self aware and so informed in the world that he can talk about life and the meaning behind it. He’s super well spoken

Zane's trying too hard to pontificate and say his thoughts. A good interviewer is there to listen to the interviewee, not use the interviewee's thoughts as a brainstorm for their own ideas.

If anything I really enjoyed how John and the interviewer were vibing and the rapport they built.
You gave me relief when you talked about starting not to give as much about a lot of things when you became 30. On the documentary parts of Keep Me Where The Light is (forced feed that one on my dad btw, next day he bought all your albums eh eh eh). This time I’m in my 30’s and again I can relate to you and use it in my upcoming mind quests.

I came to watch John Mayer and couldn't listen to the whole thing because of Zane, first time I've ever watched this show and I found him to be really annoying. Like dude (Zane) sit down, shut up and listen.
I enjoyed the interaction they had with each and didn’t feel it was too much on Zane’ part. They were defiantly on each other’s wave length.
