- Have you ever wondered how many hair grafts you'll be needing for a hair transplant? If so, look no further! I will show you guys an easy way to approximate how much follicular unit hairs you will need for a hair transplant.
The average density per cm square on a non-balding head is between 80-100 follicular units. Assuming each follicular unit has 2 hairs, that is roughly between 160 to 200 hairs per square cm.
Most hair transplant doctors tell patients that it takes about 50% hair loss in order to start appearing like you are thinning. As a result, most hair transplant doctors try to achieve the density between 50-60 follicular units per cm. Products I am using to supplement my FUE hair transplant:
1. Finasteride 1mg/day (generic brand for Propecia/Proscar) - Finasteride is approved by the FDA for male pattern baldness and is effective in slowing hair loss for men.
2. Biotin 10,000mcg/day - Biotin is effective in thickening hair, nails, and beautifying the skin. I've noticed thicker and stronger hair after using Biotin for the past few months.
3. Vitamin D 3,000IU/day - Vitamin D helps maintain a healthy body
4. Minoxidil (Rogaine) - Minoxidil slows hair loss progression and promotes hair regrowth. I've noticed that using Minoxidil helped me grow my transplanted hairs a lot more quicker.

I read to many hairs can result in poor growth. Something about poor blood supply when trying to pack it too tight. So some doctors go for 30-35 per square centimeter. It’s probably always different

Have not gotten the procedure done yet, but my doctor told me at my consult that 1800 grafts would do it. However, after drawing the exact same pattern that my doctor drew out, and using your method of measure, I came to 2600 grafts. Could this be because my doctor was counting grafts that may have 2, 3, or 4 follicles and averaging that into the coverage area?
If you’re baldness gets worse as you get older ,then you’re screwed.you won’t have enough donor hear to cover your whole bald area.you have use almost 2000 grafts JUST for a hair line-at this rate you will RUNOUT of donor hair pretty quick.thats the reality of the situation.

Except hairline is the most important thing for your overall appearance. In photos you cant look good without it, and its more of a turn off for women to see a bald hairline than a bald crown. It's like having a giant wart on your nose, or on the back of your neck. I know which I would prefer.
Nick Marks not as much you can be ok with less hair on top it's easier to hide the hairline is obvious you can sprinkle a little hair fiber or use a derma match also use medicine to slow hair loss really after I'm 45 idgaf 😂 but in my young years having a pushed back hairline sucks

I don't think so. Most doctors can do 3000 in one sitting.
hairliciously I did your calculation, and got around 2300. I've talked to a doctor and he says I need 3000 grafts. Do you think this number is a bit over the top?
5000 is not too many
~50 CM2 X ~ 50 grafts = 2500 ufs for a good result

what calculation per cm2 would you use for African American hair, being that curlier coarser hair gives you more coverage than straight hair?
most people get the illusion of full density at about 50-60 grafts per cm2. Since African American hair is usually curly, I think you can get by with fewer grafts as curly hair creates an illusion of full density. If I were to guess, I'd say anywhere from 45-50 would be ideal so that it doesn't look too thin in the event you decide to grow out your hair. Keeping it short would be the best way to go because the longer the hair is, the thinner it'll appear.
