We took care of our Mom for 7 years after a stroke at 84. She was paralyzed on the left side. We wanted her home and so we did what we had to do, which was a lot. No regrets, she was happy till the day she passed at age 91. People would always tell us they don't know anyone who did what we did. When you love someone, that's it! ❤

We are parents in our late 70's who are healthy, live in our own apartment , have a car and can still get about on our own. We have wonderful children and in laws who are around, near and far, who help with our rent and who love us in an amazing way We are thankful to G-d for the family we have and realize it is a blessing as many older people are often left on their own by their children...that is so sad!

I am an 81yr oldest child of 4 siblings. Also the only daughter of 3 who chose to be a full time homemaker upon the birth of our first child. Soon after, my husband became an airline pilot so all was for the good. I was available to host holidays and enjoy extra time with nieces and nephews. With age, I babysat my grandkids, watched over our parents medical problems. Dad's heart attack and Mom's Alzheimer. Both ended up living with me until their passing. I lost my husband 22 yrs ago and yet never alone. My kids, 6 grandkids and new 5 great grandkids come often. They are delightful and I am so grateful.

This REALLY hits close to home!! My mom and dad were just as obstinate as Granny in this film. ANYONE COULD SEE they were not capable of taking care of themselves, except THEMSELVES!! I tried my BEST to convince them to either come live with us or let me find them a place in a retirement home. This situation got so out of hand I lost my marriage and children because of it!! So I made a pact with God. PLEASE DEAR GOD, PLEEEAASE! On the event of my 68th birhtday, I want to be DEAD AND BURRIED for at LEAST 3 YEARS! I'm turning 60 this year, so only grant me 5 years more, and NO MORE THAN THAT!!
My mom died in her own bed of primary liver cancer, something she NEVER told me about, at the age of 79. My dad fell and broke his hip at 89, in that SAME HOUSE, so about 1 year later, but instead of calling for help, he just lay there until he died, and the neighbours let me know of a peculiar smell coming from the house.
PLEASE GOD, GRANT ME THIS ONE FAVOUR, BY THE TIME I REACH 68, LET ME BE DEAD FOR 3 YEARS ALREADY!!

I don't know why some children isolate them from rest of family once they got married. Old people is one of the biggest blessings one can have. My Mom lived on her own until the age of 91. She finally went into a nursing home at 92 because of her dementia. I can’t imagine leaving her alone if she was unable to care for herself. My brother lived a few blocks away from her and spent most of his time at her house and my sister and I did all her chores and looked after her until she passed . I miss my Mom terribly. This movie made me miss her more. And relive the past.

The problem with this film is that it's based on extremely old-fashioned views, but it is also based in the US, which has the worst elderly care in the whole of the "developed" world. Everything is run by beurecrats and accountants, and no human thought is even considered. The US is fundamentally broken and ill. What's worse is the ridiculous levels of "drinking the coolaid." The lack of self-awareness in US citizens is laughable and worrying in equal measure.

This was a very touching movie and yes sad but her daughter actually took the time to care for her mother which is pretty rare these days. I am now a senior and enduring what comes with aging. I am very thankful I still have my husband even though neither of us is on good health. So many adult children and grandchildren go about their own lives with no regard to us. I'm told it's a sign of the times. The worst part of being old isn't being lonely, it's being forgotten.

What a beautiful movie about the realities of getting older and how it effects families.
I was reminded so much of my dear nan. She wore a similar hairstyle and was very stubborn and quick witted. When she became ill she wanted to spend her final year at home. Her 5 surviving children took it in turns to look after her and I got to see her almost every day.
I saw her the day she passed and it's still the greatest gift I have been given. It was the clearest her mind had been for almost a year and we spent hours talking with my dad about the "good ol days". I miss her so much

I feel as though we all have these stories. My father was an only child, and when his father passed away he bought his 86 year old mother half way around the world, from the UK to Australia and she lived with us until she passed. When I was 45 I moved interstate, back to my family hi e to look after them. I stayed there until my father entered a nursing home, and then my mother passed, and a year later my father too.
It’s what children ‘should’ do for their parents. After all they gave us, it’s a no brainer.

We homeschooled our three children. It was difficult at times. When I was there, dad would leave to take a break and get other things taken care of. Mom was just 68, but COPD made her feel much older. After mom passed, dad frequently visited his relatives in KY and got to see the Grand Canyon with his brother. I have some great pics from that trip! He discovered within two years that he had Multiple Myeloma (cancer of the bone marrow) and he lived two more years; passing away in 2012, at the age of 68. They didn’t live to a ripe old age. I miss them both 😔

I've been living in a care home for the last 7 months and it might just have saved my life. You can have as much privacy as you want or else sit in the day room all day. Unless you want to end up in an early grave I's consider putting your mum and dad into one if they own a house you can sell. They are expensive so you'd have to shop around for the best deal in your area. Oce your saving threshold hits £23,250 your local council's supposed to chip in and pay the bulk of the costs depending on your care need; tho' they do take most of your benefit money or private income in return. And in 2025 this threshold is going up to £100,000!!! It will be worth your while to check this option out to give you some freedom. Good luck with it as they say@@peaceandlove544

The husband is SO selfish!!!! What a jerk!!! God forbid they mess up their almost adult sons routine, lol and smh!! He’s just pissed because he doesn’t have his wife fawning all over him and now he has to actually do something for himself! I’d kick him to the curb in no time! Your parents took care of you when you needed it and kids should take care of their parents when/if the time comes!! It’s incredibly hard to watch your parents get elderly!

      Absolutely right on!
And that daughter was not the best either. She should have not sent her mother to that death house to please her husband and son. She basically forced her mother into it. Her mother did not want to go there. This movie made me cry a lot and it makes me so upset to think how disgusting our society is. Most people do not want to take care of their elders. How ungrateful and selfish!

I’ve read so many negative comments about how this woman’s family wasn’t helping her enough…she refused the help and wanted her independence back. One can hardly blame her. On the other hand, she was very stubborn and didn’t understand how much support she really needed from her family! 😢

I broke my hip 3 months ago I was on my feet immediately because I live alone, I struggled, I was in pain, I did the things that were necessary, I made my breakfast everyday and my tea party thing at night. I washed my clothes and changed my bed linen. I'm 70 but I didn't have all that bother. She is lucky she has family to help her.

This movie is so realistic. Very difficult to watch. I was the one that took care of both of my parents. I had little help from family members and friends. The neighbor across the street helped me and the hospice people.

A broken hip with pin is major surgery requiring major big time rehab that lasts for months and much of that time is spent in a rehab center. A person's general health declines after a broken hip and their outlook can be dim with a much shorter life expectancy, usually a few years at best depending on how well they were when they broke the hip and how well they were treated after surgery. We ran circles around my mother for over 3 years after her broken hip and then her heart failed. She didn't have a bad heart in the beginning but the severe consequences of surgery and rehab at an older age made short her life. The story played out in this film would be a very rare exception and not the regular outcome.

      @potocatepetl 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Agreed. Most times doctors don't even recommend the surgery if the patient is not fit enough or is "too old" as the chance to not survive the surgery or the first month after is too high.
