- Inspired by Tiffany’s incredible multi-layered backgrounds, I experimented with my own inks, tools, and process-layer after layer-until I got results I loved. In this video, I’ll share what finally made the difference, plus my tips for making a technique feel like your own.
Have you ever had a crafting breakthrough? Let me know in the comments! And don’t forget to check out Tiffany’s original video:

Once again, very enjoyable. I love creating these types of substrates too and I learned from videos by Jennifer McGuire that you are permitted to keep adding over and over, use everything and it will eventually be incredible. I use pastes and spritz and stamps and Stencils... Go nuts 🤪
These are absolutely stunning. While I was watching I thought to myself that Natalie’s smoother would work well here and the next second you were doing it. 🌻🌻
Great job!!! They turned out beautiful!!!
WHOAW! I love how you combined Tiffany's, Natalie's and your own inspiration to come up with this!
Thank you so much!!
Oh Ardyth,
There are BEAUTIFUL!!! I love all of your color combos!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you so much!
Sensational Ardyth! Your backgrounds are divine! 🇦🇺💚
Beautiful backgrounds. Thankyou for acknowledging Natalie Bowers (NB Cards). She is a fantastic card maker and very generous with her sharing. As are you.
Thank you for taking us with you on this journey! I had already seen the Tiffany video you referenced. You are right, she makes it seem so effortless to those of us who are less experienced with the technique. Also, thank you, thank you for referencing Natalie Bowers and NBCards. I discovered her a few months ago and absolutely love her videos and her smoosher. I made different sizes for myself and even made some for friends. She deserves many more followers.
Thanks so much for watching!
Beautiful! I love making these sorts of backgrounds. 😀
Your cards are always beautiful, but these are just stunning. Thank you for sharing these. I would frame these if I had them. 💜
GORGEOUS CARDS ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks so much!
love those cards! I'm a big fan of Tiffany's... I love her work too... I might give this technique a try... TFS!
Thank you for this. Loved the card. Loved seeing the whole process.
Thanks for watching!
Love your cards, great technique!!
I saw the video you referenced. Tiffany always amazes me when she's done with a panel. I learned I always stop too early in the process. I love your variation with the smushing tool. I really need to try that. Your panel came out beautifully! Thank you for all of your tips. I'm sure they'll be really helpful for a beginner like me.
Thanks so much for watching!
Your cards are beautiful and the technique looks fun. I love playing with color.
thank you so much for posting/sharing. I struggle with watercolor backgrounds and always looking for tips. Thank you for your time and tips! Appreciate it!!
Lovely cards. I love this technique & have seen Tiffany's video also. That smoosher of Natalie's is great isn't it ❤
These are beautiful Ardyth! Thanks for telling us what you did based on Tiffany’s advice as well as how you changed things up.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
This kind of layered texturing is something that I’ve always admired, but has always looked like a dogs breakfast when I’ve given it a whirl. You’ve convinced me to try again. Drying between layers seems like an essential step I’ve skipped 🥴. You’ve convinced me to try again.
I've got a few 'dogs breakfast' panels - they're great for cutting down with die cuts. Thanks for watching!
I love how your samples turned out! It looks like fun so I might have to try it next when I have play time. I already have “smooshers” ready, so I hope it works for me. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching! I hope you have a lot of fun with it!
Those are gorgeous, love the way you made them with what you had.
These are great! Sparks my imagination 😊
Thanks so much for showing us this step-by-step process. I love your results, and I plan to try it myself soon!
That is the best kind of compliment! I'm so glad you're feeling inspired!
Ardyth, we artists LOVE Gesso (white & black). I have thinned it down and used it for splatters. Have not had issues with it bleeding or anything. Actually, splatter at the last when everything else is dry. Just a thought :). Love the use of the stencil on top of the layers - really like that. Great video - thank you for sharing with all of us.
That's a great idea about the splatter - I'll have to try that! Thanks for watching!
Just love this!! I also use the smoosher and love it! Natalie is awesome!!
Thanks for watching!
I love these cards, Ardyth! What a cool technique! Might have to give it a try....
Thanks foor watching!
Right choice with that wild berry (you asked). I loved seeing your process. I’m not sure I have the patience for all those layers. Funny I love paper piecing tho, which is also time consuming. I’ll have to give it a try.
Ooooooo. Love these. I was just playing with this the other day. It was coming out so-so. Your video has shown me a couple of things I need to tweak. I have to admit when you were going to stencil over it I was like...noooo. But, the way you did it lightly really is beautiful and added so much to it. Thank you.
I really love watching your videos!!
What a wonderful and inspirational video. There are a lot of techniques I want to try and/or get better at. One would be what you did today. Your panels came out SO BEAUTIFULLY!!! 🤩
Alcohol ink blending, is another technique I would love to do. I actually already have a bunch of alcohol inks and even Yuppo paper (clearance items are hard to resist aren’t they 😉). Now I just need to do it.
Sadly, I’ve learned about myself that I do have a fear of messing up/failing, wasting supplies I’ve spent money on, or looking foolish. I’m working on it though.
And I keep saying to myself what Justine Hovey says, “It’s just paper.” That has helped me quite a bit. I like that she named her brand of supplies based on this phrase 😊
Thanks again Ardyth for this great video 😊
Ardyth I never knew that you liked Tiffany’s beautiful style. I’ve admired her a long time too, but my true love is alcohol inks. I love to watch her do those. I stopped though because it just made me want them and I already have so much I haven’t used. So I won’t let myself buy them. I think you did a fantastic job! It’s looks just perfect and the stencil is awesome on there. I’m itchy to get my stencils out and pastes or duo gel. But it’s time to get Easter started. Spring yard clean up is in there somewhere so it’s good to start early. I think I know what I’m doing which helps. But I might make it easier on myself and do this for a background panel and put it with a cross cover plate. Anyway you did a really great job! I’d love to see more of your trials. Good, bad or the ugly. I’m sure you never make anything ugly- you’re too professional!
Thanks for the detailed instructions. You’ve inspired me to try this technique out.
I had seen her videos, but since I don't have the sprays, I didn't think it was for me. Your method of using dye inks made it click for me. Thanks!
In her last video, she used distress inks, so that really made it much more easy for me to translate to what I have. Thanks for watching!
Your cards are beautiful!! Really enjoying your videos, so much inspiration. ❤
Thanks so much! 😊
I love this and can't wait to practice. Thank you so much for sharing this technique. The results are well worth the effort
So glad you're feeling inspired! That's how I always feel after watching Tiffany!
I love how you softened the stencilling with water: the result is stunning! If you haven't tried TE answer to white spatter, it would be worth your while. It's absolutely my go-to now.
I'll have to check that out! Thanks for watching!
That background is SO pretty Ardyth!
I love the first finished card, but think I'd have used the black ink for the sentiment.
All your cards are gorgeous, thanks for sharing! x
Thanks for watching!
Beautiful designs! Hope you had fun playing! I will try!
Amazing cards! I haven't done any ink smooshing in a hot minute, and you inspired me to do it ASAP! Thanks for sharing, Ardyth 😁
So glad you're feeling inspired! Thanks for watching!
THIS is the look that I love and (fail) to get. I will follow your directions to be a layer queen. :D Thanks!
Let me know how it goes! Thanks for watching!
@@ardyth I will!
Gorgeous Ardyth, looking in from a very warm day in the South of NZ
Love this so much! Thank you for sharing all your tips you learned along the way!!! Your backgrounds and cards look amazing!
Thanks for stopping by Tiffany! You are such an inspiration!
I’m going to have to try this. Thank you. ☺️
They look amazing. I don't think I have the patience to do it. 😊
I love these backgrounds and the stencils that you used over them. They make beautiful cards! Thanks for sharing your techniques, Ardyth.
Thanks for watching!
Stunning and worth the time for all those layers!
Thanks so much for watching!
Very pretty! ❤❤❤❤
Love your technique videos. I think the wildberry sentiment was definitely the right choice. You got great looks for all three of these cards.
Thanks so much! I agree about the wildberry...
Great job! I loved watching your step by step creation of this fabulous card. Thanks for the tips and tricks that made it a successful project.
Thank you so much!
Thank you for showing this with ink smooshing! I love both approches 😃
Thanks so much for watching!
Gorgeous card! You have made me want to play and how did we work without our smooshers from Natalie?
LOL! Agreed! Thanks for watching!
Tell me more about this smooshing tool. These panels are gorgeous!
It’s a beautiful background!
Thanks so much!
you said you used the cardstock Tiffany recommended which you believe contributed to your success, but i didn't see it called out in listed supplies: Ranger Watercolor cardstock. Thanks again for the inspiring demo!
Wow, this is a great technique with a beautiful result. Thanks very much for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Beautiful cards! Love this technique but I'm not very good at it either 😅 impatience is the killer, I will be testing out the layer, drying and layering again! Thank you for sharing your process ❤
LOL! I am also impatient! Thanks for watching!
Lovely card ..yes you made the right colour choice 😍
Haha! Thank you!
Absolutely stunning ❤
Thank you!
Love Tiffany ❤
Me too! Thanks for watching!
I still need to try something like this! I've heard Gina Wakely white acrylic paint or Dr. Martin for white splatter. TFS
Thanks - I'll keep tryihg! Thanks for watching!
Beautiful!! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
really nice looking! thanks for both the demo & details.
Thanks for watching!
Oh my, what a lot of work. The finished results are lovely but I don't think I could spend that much time inking and blow drying on just one card. I might try this on a 12x12 sheet of watercolor paper for an extra special scrap page, though.
Thanks for watching!
Have to give this a try!! Thanks for sharing
So glad you're feeling inspired!
All very pretty my favorite is the second one
Thanks so much for watching!
Gorgeous cards. I'm going to look at Tiffany's videos. Can I ask where to go to look at the smoothing tool? X
The smooshing tool is the invention of NBCards - she has a channel here on TH-cam, and I believe she has a video dedicated to how to make it, but it's basically a paper towel balled up in a ziplock bag, and secured with an elastic. Thanks for watching!
@ardyth thank you.
this has been incredibly helpful, thank you... have you tried reverse stencilling on this sort of background? do a search and you will find some super inspiring work, I had a go, but like you, needed to make better abstract backgrounds like this..
May I get the directions on that little water puff tool you made. Thank you 😊😊😊
👍✌️🙏❤️
Beautiful work. Try Dr Ph Martin’s Bleedproof white.
they look really good - gelli prints are my big failure - please feel free to show me how ??
I have a good video for that: th-cam.com/video/-B52yA0Yt8I/w-d-xo.html Thanks for watching!
by chance do you know what die cut you used for the sentiment strips? I have several that look like yours just curious if it might be what I already have since the Uniko does not have the coordinating dies with the sentiment strips! Thank you again!
This is amazing! I saw the video with Tiffany but I love your variation and doing them with CP inks. Can someone please let me know who and what video that DIY smooshing tool is from ? Thanks!
The smooshing tool is from NB Cards. She has a channel here on TH-cam with a video dedicated to how to make the tool, but it's really just paper towel smushed up inside a ziploc bag and secured with tape or an elastic. Thanks for watching!
Thank you! At first I thought it was baking soda or something until I realized that wouldn’t create the texture!
Hi, these are lovely cards. Can you remind us how to make the smooshing tool? 🙏👏🏼

@ 🙏
I guess part of the process is to keep going bit by bit. Never stop. It’s a long process.
Thanks for watching!
This is a sincere question and not at all meant to be snarky, if the goal is to see the inks as you smoosh your cardstock into them, why not use an acrylic block or even a piece of glass on top of your cardstock? I mean that way you’d see what you were getting. No need to create a pouncer. Or is that not the point of the pouncer?
How did you make your smooshing tool please?
I always struggle with red splatter- I always think it looks like 😮blood
LOL!
Very nice!
Thanks!
What is a smooshing tool?
Waste of ink
LOL! I guess this isn't for you. Thanks for watching!
