    Tuira was once called little Berlin precisely because of the German soldiers In Oulu, the Germans built their largest garrison area in Tuira, 500 meters from the railway station, along the Kuivasjärvi road. In 1941, the Germans' activities were limited to the port of Toppila. In the spring of 1942, the Germans decided to build a service center because Toppila was becoming their most important port in Finland. The area was constantly expanded, in the end the 64-hectare area had almost 300 buildings, with a total area of about 50,000 m2. The base was the SS division Nord Service and Training Center, Waffen-SS Finnland Stützpunkt IV. The training center served about 2,500 men
    and in itself strange that the Tuira is divided into two parts, the East and the West Tuira

    In Mäntylä, Oulu there is the Snelmannin päiväkoti (a kindergarden) that in the war time was a childrens hospital. And they even kept one hospital crib to lile remaind people about the history. I myself went to that kindergarden and it was cool learning that about it

    You can still find places in Oulu where you can see where some of the bombings happened here. Oulu Lyseo has still those marks from the wars. I think Citynomadi app has Oulu - sodissa route which takes you all over the city. Haven't personally used it though. My dad used to tell all these stories how he always got candy from the german soldiers when he was a kid.

    I think "paska kaupunni" tag was introduced by some culchies outside of the town. It is still very hilarious, and stands forever...My question to you dear Irishman is if Limerick is Oulu of Ireland:)...? I studied in stab city in 1997. Nice to have you around. Next time I visit my home town, let's have some beer and have a good craic.

      Hmmmmm I've heard that before from a fellow Irish man living in Finland that limerick is oulu, I mean I guess it is in the sense that they are both not major cities but are still cities 😂 one thing I will say though is that Oulu is waaaaaaaay nicer and cleaner than Limerick 😂

    I am not from Oulu region but my ancestors have lived there and migrated via Oulu-river south-eastwards as I have Y-DNA relatives in that region, including Hailuoto. By the way, my Y-DNA haplogroup is R1b DF27, which is incidentally very common in - Ireland... Apparently it is connected to celto-iberian cultures, so I would really like to know how my ancestors found my way here, especially as it probably was not a recent phenomenon. We all in Finland share an ancestor around 900 AD and the closest European ancestors are some Welshmen about 2000 years ago. Oh yes, what to see in Oulu? Tar industry, the "Stockholm tar" Royal Navy used was for great part from this region, always interesting but I would look into older history of Oulu. There was great violence between Finns and Karelians here, so you could read about those raid from the 16th century. Oulu region has lots of Neolithic habitation sites which are interesting to visit and of course you have already talked about jätinkirkko-monuments. Hanseatic trade was also important in the North, so might nice to find traces of that. And the Hailuoto massacre by Russian Cossacks could be worth a talk.

    Nearly the first thing you see when you arrive at Oulu by air is a text saying something like "Oulu, the capital of Northern Scandinavia". This is a perfect way of telling that the town is governed by silly people who do not even know geography. After all, Oulu is not located in Scandinavia.

    • @IrishinFinland
      @IrishinFinland  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @alloydog613
      @alloydog613 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's marketing! :D When I first moved to Oulu, just over 20-years ago, if you'd have said Finland was part of Scandinavia, you'd have the locals frothing at the mouth, instantly telling you that Finland is NOT part of Scandinavia. Then four years or so ago, it appeared on the windows of Oulu 10 office and the buses when they got their new "Flying dick" paint jobs (white bus with big pink front end...)

    • @dennislindqvist8443
      @dennislindqvist8443 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you ask me, Oulu is too far south to be part of Scandinavia, but the name has referred to different geographical areas in the past and nowadays it includes the whole of Finland in many parts of the world.

    • @toinenprofessori771
      @toinenprofessori771 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@dennislindqvist8443 There is no reason we should adopt misconceptions which appear somewhere in the world. There is a name for the region consisting of Scandinavia and Finland. That is Fennoscandia.

    All those stories of wooden towns burning around 200 years ago are a bit sus. Just HOW CLOSE do the houses have to be to constantly catch fire from the neighbor?

    • @zaroliina

      They were close. Like inches away the closest ones, and max maybe few meters. And still are at least in Kokkola. So fairly easy to catch fire.

      I could never understand why Brits said "Ooloo". I mean in English, most "OU" sounds are hard, like "OR" - thought, bought, sought, or "OW" as in Thou, Slough and bough. OK, "through" is an "OO" sounds, but "though" is "OH" :) To me OH-luu is more natural.

    Shitty city. Paska kaupunni. When I moved to Oulu people who had moved there too from else where they told me this: Beware not to walk at late certain areas in city. If you say hello for people at day time people turn away and ignore you. If you greet them at evening they hit you, night time they may hit you with the knife. I did see many weird people while living in Oulu. Some pleasant ones of course too living in there but Oulu is the Finnish Chicago. Eight years were enough for me and I moved back at the Finnish-Swedish coast where people are more friendlier.

    This city is awful, worst of all of them.
    Here, the girls have to be at home in time.
    No woman can ever want us here,
    this is such a shit town.
    Pete won't, Pete won't just quit,
    he might tempt us to the streets even when rains nails.
    And then we hang around and check the same places three times.
    Oulu is a shit town.
    Misery, stupidity, nothing worthwhile.
    We could use this time better, and jury-rig
    some system, that would take us the hell away from here.
    Oh, a shit town,
    a shit town.
    Chorus:
    Hey man, nothing's happening today!
    Hey man, nothing's happening today!
    Nothing. Can. Let's go away!
    Pete knows a fun girl for me.
    If I touch her it's like a bad omen:
    She's stupid, she's ugly, after that affair
    no dream can exist.
    Of the girls, of good angels,
    there's no more dreams, nothing matters.
    Now we're dredging mud from the very depths.
    Oh, a shit town. A shit town.
    Chorus
    That bitch coerces a promise from me to come again.
    I want to shower now, or burn in a fire,
    but nothing can wash the evil off of me.
    Oh, a shit town.
    (mellow)
    Railroad, Railroad goes to the south.
    If you play by the rules of mediocrity you can only lose,
    and if you lose you just have to skip town.
    Oh, a shit town.
    Chorus
