This is just NASTY!! And I love it. "Do me in if you can do it now" I saw Betty Davis live at Crampton Auditorium at Howard Univ. We were a frenetic mess by the end of the concert. Our throats were hoarse, clothes sweat and our brains were scrambled.
This is the 1st TIME I'VE EVER HEARD BETTY DAVIS' BAD A** FUNKDEFIED SOUL MUSIC AND I'M A 35yr old music woman, or so I thought!!! I ABSOLUTELY DIG HER, AND NOT ONLY WAS I INSPIRED, MOVED, ON MY FEET DANCING ALL OVER THE HOUSE, EVEN BETTER I WAS LIBERATED!!!!!!! THANK YOU!!!! ps. I've been watching TH-cam ever since the website came out and this is the 1st comment I've ever made...thats how good she is to me!
I had this album over 34 years ago. She was married to Miles Davis..and i got a lot of play because we looked just alike... fro and all..LOL. Sooo glad this is posted - verry fond memories. I even wore the same outfit on Haloween..She's the original gamester!
Holy shit, I just got turned on to this song yesterday here in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania....Some kid played it on CMUs radio station: 88.3 WRCT FM. My hair stood up on my neck when I heard this. Damn, Betty you rocked the funk so hard, Baby......Much love and respect.
2022'💕First time knowing (Betty Davis💕😇'Queen of Funk) & hearing🎶Game is my middle name🎶 but know of 🎶If I'm In Luck I Might Get Picked Up❤🎶at age 9... Thanks For Sharing!!👍🏽✌🏽And My Prayers🙏🏽and Condolences to the Family...
Rip Betty they wasn't ready for you The best artists you never hear about I hope she gets the props now and she what trailblazer she was she was a huge influence on prince
I don't think the planet could handle that. Seeing those two together and hopefully getting a duet is something we're just going to have to wait for until we're reborn into our eternal spirit bodies.
Strange I never heard of her before, but I missed much of the 1970s music because I lived in the woods without electricity until 1990. This is seriously badass music. I’m reminded a little of Bettye LaVette. Wonder if she ever sang any Betty LaVette songs. They would fit her perfectly.
I remember having the "Luck" 45 with the picture above on the jacket sleeve. My older cousins were oogliing over the photos. I did now know all her music, but am discovering it now. With the exception of the production, this could be today.
She was B4 your time...i loved Betty Davis in the 1975 and beyond when I was in HS. America couldn't handle at FREAk back them...Listen to her music. She was popular in the East Coast, Chicago NY....Her first album If I'm In luck I might get picked up . was a smash hit. He Was a Big Freak, She can cop him, Your man my man and many more.....
@@bonitalynnwhite To be fair betty was still kinda under the radar, even for a lot of people that were around at the time. She didn't get a whole lot of exposure, throughout most of the us. You're right tho....she came out in the wrong decade, and was too ahead of her time. It's only in recent years that she is now starting to, get discovered and appreciated more. Still feel like more people should who she is tho
She was born Betty Mabry. She acquired the last name of Davis because she was married to jazz legend Miles Davis for about, (I don't know)… like..."7 minutes" or something like that; long enough to keep and use Davis as her stage name.
@chea943 Yes and Sylvester's version of Southern Man by Neil Young was and still is incredible. Love Betty and her band, especially Larry Johnson on the bass-a true pioneer.
She was married 2 Miles, and introduced him 2 Jimi. They were going 2 record 2gether but Miles found out they having an affair. He (Miles) wrote a song called Ms Mabrey (her maiden name), but it's a great tune, so...............
@tigressnva No, Ruth didn't work with Betty, just June, Anita and Bonnie. At the time this recording was made Ruth wasn't in the group. Unless she went under another name or wasn't giving credit for her work.
Joi Gilliam def got her inspiration from Betty. I mean, the music sounds completely the same style wise. Its so.....funky and different. Not your typical music format and random key changes.....its quite amazing and artistic to say the least. I wish more people knew of these artist. But for the people who DO know them......they are truely an inspiration.
She was different and bad, I saw a docum. on Jimi Hendrix and it said Miles andHendrix were going to do a alblum together but Miles found out Hendrix and Betty were messing around, do you think that is true or did you ever hear anything
^^^ lmao...NO SHE DIDN'T. Betty is alive and living in Pittsburgh, but sadly removed herself from the music industry over 30 years ago... one reason is she got feed up with the music industry because the record labels and radio did not acknowledge her gift/Craft/Artistry as they did for Madonna and Prince years later... She was too sexual and raunchy for radio. They did not accept her music. But she had a underground following in some city's in the 70's...She had a big following in DC and only "if i'm in luck' got played on the radio and then a little radio play with "shut off the lights"...But she had a following. Sadly, I think she's bigger now, since she left the industry....

I am 26 and I'm just no discovering this. I've been missing out on this gal's music for years...wtf! Better late than never but damn! I love it!
Sylvester and the pointer sisters did the background vocals on this song my jam
The Queen of Funk. All others are inpersonators.
At this point I'm inclined to agree.
I had this album over 34 years ago. She was married to Miles Davis..and i got a lot of play because we looked just alike... fro and all..LOL. Sooo glad this is posted - verry fond memories. I even wore the same outfit on Haloween..She's the original gamester!

The first time I heard this I just about lost my mind. I had never heard a single song encapsulate an entire era of music with such perfect power.

My Mommy & Daddy just told me about her. It's like all those obscure songs that get stuck in your head and you just sing along. 😮Amazing...

You gotta love she has the Pointer Sisters and Sylvester as background singers to add to the awesomeness.
Betty Davis and Janis Jopin in concert. . . together. . . only in my dreams.

I don't think the planet could handle that. Seeing those two together and hopefully getting a duet is something we're just going to have to wait for until we're reborn into our eternal spirit bodies.

I listen to this every day!
She's still alive!
she's such a fucking rock star!!!!
she is alive, but difficult to find! I read an interview w/ her a few yrs ago.
Strange I never heard of her before, but I missed much of the 1970s music because I lived in the woods without electricity until 1990. This is seriously badass music. I’m reminded a little of Bettye LaVette. Wonder if she ever sang any Betty LaVette songs. They would fit her perfectly.
Pointer Sisters in the background😍
And Sylvester.
The guitar on this one 🔥
Neal Schon !

Call it what you want but the moment Lady Gaga can get anywhere near this much soul then we can talk this track is unmatched to this day
Why haven't I heard of her before?
She was B4 your time...i loved Betty Davis in the 1975 and beyond when I was in HS. America couldn't handle at FREAk back them...Listen to her music. I asked myself the same thing after hearing this. And I'm NO stranger to music from this era and style.

The things she asked of me at the end of the day would have made Ike Turner blush !
why did I always attach the name Betty Davis to some idea of a country singer? This lady kills it.
+Peter Wangler I always think of the actress Bette Davis.
She was born Betty Mabry. She acquired the last name of Davis because she was married to jazz legend Miles Davis for about, (I don't know)… like..."7 minutes" or something like that; long enough to keep and use Davis as her stage name.
Yaaaassssssss Betty
She is my rock n roll/funk idol. I love her so much!

This song kicks major ass!
Sheeeeiiiit...got to go pull out my Betty Davis LP now !

@chea943 Yes and Sylvester's version of Southern Man by Neil Young was and still is incredible. Love Betty and her band, especially Larry Johnson on the bass-a true pioneer.
Nice!
Never heard of her b4
One of my favs!
She continued the psychedelic soul push in the early 70s Sly Stone brought to the scene funk with a little bit of rock sprinkled in.
Holy fuck the vocals! Damn! Throw that shit down!
The Dead Weather should pay her royalties.
***** Good f**king call!

@Phyre702
Betty and Joi are both lethal, totally original women. The reason they CAN be is because their roots run DEEP :D
Absolutely, Neneh Cherry too
She was married 2 Miles, and introduced him 2 Jimi. They were going 2 record 2gether but Miles found out they having an affair. He (Miles) wrote a song called Ms Mabrey (her maiden name), but it's a great tune, so...............
No,she denied having an affair with jimi.that's what miles thought, jimi was her friend
@bubbahchops i love sylvester i love her. thanks for info. is there any video of her as back singer?
Betty and Prince should have made beautiful music together
This song would make a great anthem for any sports team, or UFC fighter, as they enter the sports field to take battle.
still is!
@chea943 Wow, man, thanks for that unknown information. Knowledge.
👑
Thats odd.People (in this case your sisters ex) have some strange views sometimes.
Betty is just so fun to listen to.Natural talent.
The Original Nasty Girl: The older Miles Davis might have thought that he was turning her out. But ole Miles was never the same ever since!
@tigressnva No, Ruth didn't work with Betty, just June, Anita and Bonnie. At the time this recording was made Ruth wasn't in the group. Unless she went under another name or wasn't giving credit for her work.
this one featured vocals by the Pointer Sisters & Sylvester!
4 folks sure love Glenn Beck!

cool!
The sole purpose of a child's middle name is so he can tell when he's really in trouble.
better than the rest..........................
🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵🥰🥰🥰💃🏽
thinking this sounds like the boys at Muscle Shoals, i hear Roger on drums Berry on Keys, Hood on bass??? Junior on guitar???
And ?
Way off. Its Greg Errico on Drums; Larry Graham on Bass; Hershall Kennedy on Organ; and Doug Rodrigues on Guitar.
*****
Dayum, I didn't know Larry Graham was Betty's bassist. That's awesome.
So question: No video / film exist of Betty Davis?
did you hear Anita Pointer singing the background?
Everyone's talking about the singer but nobody in the comments section is talking about AILEEN!!!
She was different and bad, I saw a docum. on Jimi Hendrix and it said Miles andHendrix were going to do a alblum together but Miles found out Hendrix and Betty were messing around, do you think that is true or did you ever hear anything
Neal Schon from Santana 3 and Santana Caravanserai on Guitar

Is she still alive? If not, when did she die?
Arthur Amaker yes she's alive! She has a concert in MD on Sept 14, 2018
