    An author who is considered a classic writer but whose books seem to seldom end up on best/favorites lists is George Eliot. I've only read Middlemarch which was really, really good. Also have a copy of her The Mill on the Floss which I plan to read someday.
    Also, you said that 50 AD was toward the end of the Roman Empire. I'm afraid that you're off by at least 300 years. Actually it's closer to the beginning.

      George Eliot is so great! I definitely feel like her books are under-hyped when it comes to classics.

    Does someone need to be a pirate to enjoy a book about pirates? Or a canine to enjoy a book about dogs? Most open-minded, reasonable adults can read a Christian-themed book (like The Robe or Screwtape Letters), regardless of their personal beliefs. No apologies or disclaimers needed.

    • @AnneEWilliamson

      My first video on TH-cam was actually a reading of The Raven by Edger Allen Poe, but I don't see myself doing any book readings. Classics have so many great audiobooks already, many already on TH-cam, that I just don't think my narrative ability is better then those narrators.

    Good video. I've read THE ROBE and I, CLAUDIUS and CAPTAIN BLOOD is probably the next on my list. Just one thing -- 50 A.D was the Golden Age of Rome. The beginning of the decline began around 250 A.D.
    Thanks for the video.

    I suggest you read Vladimir Nabokov's Lectures about Russian and English literature. He has a chapter about Gogol's Dead Souls. And btw, DS is not a "minor" classic. It is a very major classic... Gogol, together with Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky, are the "Big Three" of Russian literature. (Pushkin is there too, but he's a poet.) But it's wonderful to hear your wide-eyed "discovery" of Gogol... Now go Read Nabokov's take of him. You'd like it.

    • @AnneEWilliamson
      @AnneEWilliamson  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I consider Gogol's Dead Souls a minor classic in the context of American/English readers. While I agree it is big in Russia, it's not really known in America, unlike Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky whose books are more mainstream. I'll have to look up Vladimir Nabokov's Lectures.

    • @thesleuthinvestor2251

      @@AnneEWilliamson Gogol is big not just in Russia, just as Homer is big not just in Greece. but please do look up VN's lectures. I envy you, since you'll be able to read them for the first time. BTW, he gave them at first to a large class of women, several of whom later became well known writers. Nabokov himself is of course a classic, and his Lolita is part of the Western Cannon. Cheers.

    "I Claudius " is not about the fall of Roman Empire, but about the beginning of Roman Empire. It reflects the transition from a patrician republic to an Empire, i.e., an state where there is an Emperor. The fall of the empire will take place almost five centuries afterwards. The novel covers the story of four generations of patricians , that means. less than a century.

    • @AnneEWilliamson
      @AnneEWilliamson  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep. Someone else commented that as well. I misspoke, lol. Though it certainly was the beginning of the end, as much of the Roman empire began to decay during Commodus's reign, who lived a century after Claudius.

    I just subscribed to your channel. This video just popped up in my YT feed, probably because “Classics” is in the title. I have read a lot of Victorian and mid-Century books but I haven’t read any of the books you mentioned. I have heard of most of them or have seen the film adaptations. “The Robe” and “Lilies of the Field” were each made into pretty good movies. “I,Claudius” was a British made series which made a big splash when it was was shown on PBS. “North and South” which is on my Reading Wish List was another popular series which I have yet to see. Since you like Gaskell, you may really enjoy Anthony Trollope’s book “The Way We Live Now”.
    Have you made a “Book Tube Newbie Tag Video”? If you use that term in the title a lot more people will find your channel. Folks reportedly search that term when they are looking for new book tubers with similar taste. In this video you touched on quite a few genres.

    • @AnneEWilliamson

      "Moor" is the European traditional name for Muslim inhabitants around Sicily and other areas in Italy. So technically, Moors could be of European, African, or Middle Eastern descent. I really enjoyed the wide-ranging & surprising & thoughtful choices here.
    And I am happen to be reading CAPTAIN BLOOD right now-am about 40 pages from the end-& while it's fun is it "DEFINITELY the greatest pirate novel of all time"?
    Well, definitely NOT.
    :)
    Too many of the secondary characters are flatly portrayed & the prose is often pedestrian & sometimes even clunky.
    Yes, English wasn't Sabatini's first language but knowing that isn't enough to improve his writing. (English wasn't Nabokov's native language either but good luck trying to discern that from the sentences in any of his books.)
    A bona fide masterpiece about pirates is A HIGH WIND IN JAMAICA (1929) by Richard Hughes. (Also called THE INNOCENT VOYAGE.)
    It's about some pirates who kidnap some kids & it's richly evocative of childhood & v. convincing about pirates.
    Beyond the various pleasures of the story, it is in written in a concise & lyrical prose.
    I gotta stick up for the Hughes-I hope you don't mind. (It's in my Top 10.)
    But, again, I enjoyed the video very much & it motivated me to put THE ROBE & LILLIES OF THE FIELD on my TO READ shelf (I, CLAUDIUS is already there).
    I love Chesterton by the way (as well as the one novella by Gaskell that I've read, whose name I can't recall).
    Peace,
    MAS

      Thank you! Ah, well, it's a pity you aren't enjoying Captain Blood as much as I did. Chesterton is definitely one of my favorites! I haven't read anything else by Elizabeth Gaskell, but I do want to read all her works.

      Also, I'll have to check out that Hughes book. I haven't heard of it. Thank you for the recommendation!
