In Ramayan, Ahalya is wrongly punished for Lord Indra's sin i.e his lust for her. In the present movie, Ahalya aka the actress, wants to take revenge for past wrong done to her by punishing men who lust her and wrongfully use the magic stone to act upon that lust.

The real motive of this film was to challenge MALE PATRIARCHY. As he told, Ahalya (who was created by brahma and was very beautiful. ) was a the wife of Maharishi Gautam who went to bath early morning. Just then, Indra in the rage of his lust used his magical powers (using his magical stone) to disguise as the rishi and seduced her. Accha to scene ye hai, in our mythology, a great sage Gautama had a young wife ahalya. The king of gods, Indra fell for us and came to her looking like the sage. And made love to her. You do not understand here why the artist asked the police inspector if he had read the Ramayana. Ahalya (here the name of Radhika Apte) is a character in Ramayana. He turned down the honorary Padma Shri award from the Indian government in the 1970s but in 2004, he accepted the prestigious Padma Bhushan award from the President of India. Ahilya (in Hindi there is 'i', after 'h' instead of 'a' . ) Was one such trapped soul, waiting to be liberated. So story of Ahilya is ancilliary to 'basic storyline ' of Ramayana. Ahilya was consort of sage Gautama long before Rama was born. A very devoted wife. Indra is king of angels , who was mesmerized by her beauty. Though Indra was supposed to act in morally good manner, but he acts mischievously. He using his powers transforms himself and takes form of her husband, Sage Gautama, and thus tricks Ahilya. When Gautama comes to know of it, he in his rage, curses Ahilya to be a stone. However later coming to know Ahilya was innocent, it was Indra who tricked her, allows her a way out, telling that many years later Lord Rama himself will liberate her from stone form, she will hence attain highest form, I.e. she will go to abode of God, being liberated by lord himself. So here the writer felt that Indra should have been punished instead of Ahilya, and so they made changes to story accordingly. You see name of inspector is Indra.

So, like everyone has said in the comments, the story is based on Ahalya's story from Ramayan. The basic premise as you can tell is: lust. In Ramayan, Ahalya is wrongly punished for Lord Indra's sin i.e his lust for her. In the present movie, Ahalya aka the actress, wants to take revenge for past wrong done to her by punishing men who lust her and wrongfully use the magic stone to act upon that lust.
Buddy u need to know the reason behind the name ahalya. Ahilya from ramayana had one story about conversation of her as stone. Indra made her fool as bearing the body of her husband and used her . When her husband came to know about the incident he punished her wife by cursing her to convert in stone rather cursing the main culprit indra. The ahalya movie is re considering if what could actually be done in case of judgement.

If u wud have known the story of Ahalya from Ramayana you would have appreciated the greatness of the director... How he changed mythological story to a fictional current day story... The director is Sujoy Ghosh who directed Kahani(starring vidya balan & nawazuddin) which is among the best movies ever made in Bollywood.... Infact the police officer is referred as Indro once in the film which actually is just a hint to the mythology...
Coming to the language it is Bengali.... Bengal is one of the state(other being Punjab) which was divided in 1947... The indian part is the state of west bengal & the other part is now Bangladesh & thy speak the same language.... Infact this is the language for which 21st Feb is declared as the International Mother Language day by United Nations....
Now coming to chachaji... He is the legendary Soumitra Chatterjee.... He has received many awards bt to name a few-
Dadasaheb Falke Award(Highest award one can get for contribution to Indian cinema) & Legion of Honor which is the highest civilian award given by French Government.... The real motive of this film was to challenge MALE PATRIARCHY. As he told, Ahalya (who was created by brahma and was very beautiful. ) was a the wife of Maharishi Gautam who went to bath early morning. Just then, Indra in the rage of his lust used his magical powers (using his magical stone) to disguise as the rishi and seduced her. When the real rishi came he was furious BUT instead of expressing his anger on Indra, he cursed his wife and made her a stone for infidelity and Indra was not blamed (or less blamed as he was cursed to lose his charm & beauty in some versions of the story) for the sin that majorly he committed.
So here, instead of Ahalya, Indra (policeman) was punished as he returned to had sex with her disguised coz he is bloody tharki (pervert). Not the woman who is technically consummating with her husband. How the hech is SHE disloyal????
Accha to scene ye hai, in our mythology, a great sage Gautama had a young wife ahalya. The king of gods, Indra fell for us and came to her looking like the sage. And made love to her. Gautama came back and caught them, cursed Indra to have a thousand vaginas on his forehead.. and made ahalya into stone. It can be read as wo sharm aur guilt se patthar ban gayi. Years later Lord Rama visited them, and by a mere touch of his, she became human again. It can also be read like what Christ did to an allegedly promiscuous woman, absolving her of her guilt.
Now , many people a question, what was Ahalya's fault?? Why should the woman br blamed for sth thats not her fault. (Although there are references that she did realise mid way that this can't be her husband.. making love to a god can't be like that with a human.. hence the guilt)
This turns the story on its head and now, its the men.. who try to take advantage of a situation and con the woman.. and as a punishment are turned into stone.
The story says.. this is how it should happen. No matter if the woman was leading you on, you had sex with her pretending to be her husband.. the fault is entirely yours.
Every indian knows Ahalya's story.. hence the impact of the man turning into stone is far greater on them, than on you, perhaps.

This infidelity angers Gautama and he curses Ahalya and she turns into a stone only to be rescued by Shri Ram.
Here instead of Ahalya all the Indras are being turned into something rigid because here they are the ones showing infidelity.

Bro, I love your work and I am a subscriber, I usually don't comment on youtube videos but I thought you should know because its evident that you dont know that the guy you called "CHACHA ji" is Soumitra Chatterjee, he is one of the beacons of the renaissance movement of Indian Cinema which started in the 1950's , He started his work with the legendary directory Satyajit Ray, Soumitra has received the 'Officier des Arts et Metiers', the highest award for arts given by the French government, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from Italy. He turned down the honorary Padma Shri award from the Indian government in the 1970s but in 2004, he accepted the prestigious Padma Bhushan award from the President of India. Keep up the good work though :)

The stone turns you into whoever you desire to be, your lust, is you, since you couldn't control yourself, you wanted to be you, you wanted to be her husband (hence you see that in the mirror), and therefore you are no different from anyone else, you are you but just like everyone else, and hence the fate. This is my interpretation, everybody can interpret the way they want, making this story stand apart, solely on this point.
