  • This episode is brought to you by Wondery's new podcast AGAINST THE ODDS: UNCHARTED: TEDDY ROOSEVELT’S AMAZON EXPEDITION at wondery.com/shows/against-the...
Today we hear the Combat Story of 29 year Army Special Operations (USASOC) veteran and Operator Rick Hogg, who spent time with the 82nd, 7th Special Forces Group and US Army Special Operations Command. His time ranged from Desert Storm deep into the post-9/11 era.
Rick spent years as a K-9 handler in the Special Ops community, forging a very strong bond with his dog “Duco” in particular. Rick managed through years of deployments and overcame the effects of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) with a very concerted focus on his own health and transition from the military that many can learn from.
After leaving the service, Rick now owns War Hogg Tactical offers mobile firearms, tactical and K9 training to civilians, military and law enforcement agencies that was borne out of his experience training Special Forces. He’s written the book “The Firearms Training Notebook: 1% Better Everyday”, co-hosts the On The Range Podcast, and founded the “In Honor of Duco” charity.
I hope you enjoy this wide ranging and emotional discussion with a USASOC operator as much as I did.

Dear sir. Mr. Hogg is correct. Many of us who retired are tied to our career and unable to move to something else. For some it is the highest rank they held and they identify as that. Probably not too healthy. It is great to listen to someone who has figured some things out and is honest and courageous enough to articulate it. Wonderful session. Thank you.

I’m usually a silent spectator who enjoys these without leaving a comment but his talk about mourning and emotions and living for the dead keeping their legacy alive really resonated with me as someone who’s lost people and would absolutely just shove all the emotions in a box. It took me a long time to start my healing process as well and hearing this stuff be said and talked about is necessary, too many people still bottle everything up. I wholeheartedly support the message of even men need to feel their emotions, and it makes you no less of a man to do so. More people need to hear that.

As a retired service member with any time over 20 years, doesn’t he get to use the same facilities and doctors cuz he maintains his tri-care for life? • @Senior3835

Ryan, how could you let him get out of this interview without calling him on his BS. Does he think “Trigger” was any less of a badass because she was a women? Does he consider the 152 female service members killed in the GWOT lesser because they were women? Does he believe that combat is only reserved for the combat arms? Does he believe that her teammates were worried about her being a woman before Shannon Kent was killed in Syria with SOF? Is he intentionally disparaging fellow war fighters who made the ultimate sacrifice, or was it an accident? I’m still waiting for someone to explain how these “woke” programs have made the military less lethal. Love the show, keep doing what you do.

I was always taught NEVER tie a leash around your waist. You cannot control a big dog if he decides to bolt unexpectedly. He can drag you into traffic or into a room quick and easy. Without even getting into no traction on shale or wet floors or snow.

I respect you immensely as a soldier, and I can’t begin to match what you’ve contributed to my and everyone else’s freedoms, but bro, we wouldn’t need social engineering in the military or anyplace else for that matter, if we didn’t live in a society that has some inexcusable and profound dysfunction. The 50s are gone for good reason, and not many black, brown, female, queer people want to step back into that shit way of life, and most of all if America doesn’t join the rest of the world in not being needlessly dickish we will absolutely be left behind…
