Anna Lembke is a psychiatrist, author and specialist in the treatment of addiction. Her new book, "Dopamine Nation: Finding Balance in the Age of Indulgence," is available now.
What a fabulous conversation and what a wonderful, kind and empathetic woman. This lady should be held up as a super-healthy role model (especially for younger females) as there is a dearth of wise and kind female role models being shown to us by the media. Can't help but feel that Anna is working for the greater good of all of us - very cool indeed.
Joe! Of course people get addicted to podcasts sometimes. You listen to one, then another, then another, all day. All week. Always must be listening to something, learning something or avoiding the pain of silence. Must. Have. Background. Podcast.
I really dislike how Joe side steps his “addiction” and subs it with video games. Really bro? What about your weed, your alcohol consumption, lol. I mean seriously? I know it’s not Dr. Lembke’s job to put him, but it’s just contributing to folks who think they aren’t addicted to those things.
How fake he is. this is the attitude of people who forget that one day they will die like any other person and turn into soil or ashes. How special he is…
@@ReynaldoRosales-g6eI don’t know the frequency and quantity he smokes, so idk. I know he’s got sober October and strikes me as a balanced dude. Plus, he started smoking after 25 when his brain was fully developed.
@@StevenFerrer-jm2hm Brain development is a strong point, but it only applies to children and growth. Smoking weed on the weekly is something that "if you don't abstain" for at least :30 days it will continue to have a hold on you. Just because he's super open about it, and doesn't need to hide his need to smoke doesn't mean it doesn't have a hold on him. + He'll never say that because he's o.k. with the hold. There's no way someone who smokes has clarity though. Speaking from experience, and from others experiences on it. It's not as killer as alcohol, which is quite the hold, but it's still stops an individual from reaching their highest self. And while looking at someone like Joe, who I still love watching his show (but doesn't mean I don't call a spade a spade), but looking at someone like Joe who seems to have tons of access to wealth, and whatever else society places on a pedal stool, it doesn't mean "for me" someone I would want to emulate. You can have work ethic and discipline, and still be cloudy as hell, you know. Not trying to debate here, and probably should never post on TH-cam in comments, but just clarifying my stance:)
This is why I never liked recovery programs, especially AA ... they barely know anything but act like they have all the answers..Joe knew much more about the human condition... She knows a little bit about the science. People have different intelligent levels.. people are so different.. they should be clear about that when a person goes into any program...
What’s interesting is he’s actually describing what she’s advocating for. He’s talking about leaning into pain and the friction of challenging oneself. That’s the opposite end or dopamine reward and what she’s recommending people do - challenge themselves to tolerate discomfort instead of binge dopamine sources.
Wish Joe would have brought up Michael Jordan’s gambling addiction. Would have liked to see the insight on that. Or maybe he doesn’t have one or maybe he does or maybe he doesn’t. Stop praising that goof Joe
It feels damn near impossible to get by withdraws of weed😔 say I won’t smoke and then when I try not to it’s all i think about while going through the day if I don’t get it🤦🏾♂️
Just a few encouraging words… i was a daily weed smoker for basically 20 years and wanted to see what my life was like without weed. Stopped and experienced what u were saying which ironically motivated me bc it was so annoying thinking about it constantly. Stuck with it and around 2 weeks u start feeling better mentally, 3 months basically dont think about it, and 1 year u literally never think about it at all. Good luck, stay strong, its amazing not ever thinking about it. So freeing!
@@SuperDuperTrey thanks for the advice and I actually recently stopped 2 weeks ago and I haven’t been thinking about. But It wasn’t necessarily by choice I had a health scare which made me stop and my body just wasn’t craving It any more. I’m glad It happened tho just wish I did It on my own mental strength but I’m great full
Common Joe, im only 33 mins and I can hardly continue to watch. Asking her questions like what is the benefit of being in the moment, or her explaining to live in the grey because dopamine makes us always very high or low. OR when she asks if you ever experienced a low after a task or accomplishment that should have made you feel great and you said no never lol. Not sure I’ll be able to finish this one. She is insightful but if I was sitting beside you I’d be tapping your foot under the table!
Do NOT compare video game addiction to chemical addiction. That’s insomnia and ur a freaking comedian for work. Drugs actually alter your brain chemistry and outs you in physical withdrawal so you can’t go to work without it, literally. Especially your frontal cortex your decision making center where normal people would say maybe this isn’t helping me like Joe did with video games
Didn’t like how he approached this tbh, for him to challenge having no addictions…. Come on Joe
The doc is the goat !!!!

Why do you believe it’s an addiction though? How often and how much does he smoke? I KNOW he doesn’t have an alcohol addiction.
