I just learned about this third gear issue. I'd finally talked myself into shopping for a Stratoliner rather than a Road King, thinking that Yamaha probably had their act together better than H-D. Now I'm thinking the antiquated H-D design would probably be easier for home mechanics to tear into when things start to fail. This third gear problem seems to be fairly common, so it's not an IF but a WHEN. That would totally nag at me while I was trying to roll on the miles and enjoy the bike.
My 08 raider with 70,000+ miles finally let go at the third gear. Looking for a used engine to swap it over and take the opportunity to do the same thing with the stock engine. Thanks for the video!!!
Why would you replace the engine instead of just repairing the issue with updated parts? That engine should go at least 200k miles what makes you think your used engine will be any better?
@@hunterpinson807 at the time I found a complete low mileage engine from a 2011 bike for a good price(to my understanding the 3rd gear issue was fixed in the later bikes) it made more sense to spend the money to just swap the engine, than to spend my time disassembling the current engine and have my bike together in a shorter amount of time. I open the engine and the engine is brand new. It only has 9,000 miles
Shawn, thanks for the video. I have a 2008 Tommy blue raider S. It has the noisy 3rd gear. If you read the comments I would like to know where you are and if you would do a 3rd gear replacement on mine. Not sure how to contact you. I will watch for a response in comments.
Thanks for watching. I live in ns but don't do any private work anymore. This is a very expensive repair (labour) and should only be done by somebody who is competent in this state of dissasembly and assembly. One mistake and your transmission won't shift.
Thank you for your video 💗 John Graham Cincinnati Ohio. 06 stratoliner 49k. Seems like everytime I hear there's a problem with the 1900 it's always on the Raider I don't understand I'll keep watching and thank you BC be careful
I’m getting ready to yank the motor out of my Raider to do some weld work on the bottom of the frame(got into an accident few months ago) Any advice please?? It’ll be my first time doing it. Any Do’s and Don’ts?? I’ve been over the manual numerous times..it just looks a little confusing..only because I haven’t done it yet..it’ll probably make sense when I start going at it..
since you will have it apart, could you let us know what transmission seal is likely to be damaged, i think i could of overfilled it, causing it to leak gear fluid under the bike
I have a 2008 raider 26k miles and my 3rd gear is grinding and disengaging. The Yamaha dealership here in Mukwonago Wisconsin says that they never heard of a problem and that Yamaha dont have a recall or bulletin. So Yamaha made a better replacement for the 3rd gear but don't know anything about any problems. If anyone has any info I can use let me know. This is going to cost me alot of money.
My 07 Stratoliner that I bought in Illinois brought to milwaukee that was originally from Missouri chatters at certain higher rpms but it stays engaged. Try to keep the revs low and try not to hang out there too long. But these early models all seem to have this noise. I haven't seen anything in the oil or the filter.
Just recently bought an 07 Stratoliner. I am so depressed about this I am looking to get back into riding since my accident ( different motorcycle) and this happens I saved for years to get a bike since I got nothing from the driver who hit me this just kills me😢
What is the problem with 3rd gear? Is it covered under recall? What is the mileage on that bike? Does it affect all model years? I just bought an '09 Raider.
This one kicks out of third. Some of them won't go into 2nd or third gear. There were some recalls on certain models. Look up the v star forum on the internet for specifics. It only affected certain years and models. This one has under 30 thousand Km.
@@HammerHeadGarage Not sure wich V-Star forum you mean. No problems with my 09 tranny so far. The bike only has 3,900 miles (6,276 km) on it. Please let me know if you come across any recalls or other information about the Raider. Post update videos on the job. Bob, Patchogue, N.Y.

Don't listen to this guy. This is not a common problem at all. Just go on the message boards and see how many guys are over 100,000 mi without issue
That looks like a two coffee can job, one to put all the extra bolts in when the job is complete. Thanks for the well done video.
Haha yes sir! lots of coffee. It is a big job for sure but we will get it done.
the right time of year for this job
Yes sir! hopefully we get it all back together and working proper :)

Would you happen to have a close up of how timing was and did you do video of valve adjustment thanks for video really helping me out
I don't, get the factory service manual.
UPDATE*** we are STILL waiting on a rotor puller for this engine.
I've located a 2014 Raider with 15K miles for a very good price. Did Yamaha have the tranny issue resolved by 2014?
Aright days two on the shit show ...i like that .;)...im doing the job right now your video its a gift for me real hand my friend thank you so much

What was the actual symptom/issue with the trans bedore tear down?
Broken teeth on 2nd gear

transfer case seal.....
@@h.v.4286 Yes. There are several seals that can cause a leak. I am replacing them all.
What was the cost just in parts for this job? Thanks for great video🤙
Roughly $1300 Canadian Dollars. 80% of this job is labor due to the necessity of total teardown to get to the transmission. Thanks for watching.

It’s a Raider, you called it a “Stryker”.
Yes I did, and work on both. The engines are very similar.
For what it's going to cost for this repair, he could have just bought another Raider.
Depends where you are in the country. Here a Raider like this one is 10,000 dollars. The Bill was around $6500.
Raider has 100 hp and 115 torque. I don't think ya viago can
It was a joke.
