Enjoy and apreciate this masterpiece from a young musical genius. A bit different than the album version and, for my part, out of this world.

Mike Oldfield is certainly a modern Mozart. Ommadwan deserves to be listen in it magnificent full version.

Yes I can fully confirm! Got Hergest Ridge in '76 when I was 13, the LP and here the songs are still with with me. My analogue equipment is taking an extended rest time, but soon to be on again, Thorens turn table, Revox A77 etc

Ommadawn was given to me when I was 15yrs old and going through a really bad time. I still have it (1978). It gave me great comfort then, and through other times in my life. Thanks Mike 💐🥂

The part of me who holds Ommadawn as one of my favourite albums of all time would say that this can only be enjoyed as a cohesive whole, the music fan in me is loving it and the completionist in me is amazed at how different the mix is.. there are parts here I never noticed on the LP!

Can't stop playing this it is a masterpiece.
You can tell Oldfield’s guitar playing a mile away. No one else has that intense string vibrato. “Platinum” is his best guitar album imo, but there’s great playing on all his albums. He doesn’t get the credit he deserves for his playing.
Mike started working on this album in January 1975. I was born on the 6th of January 1975 and it has always been my favourite album, So I was delighted to learn that the birth of this masterpiece and I were of the same time.
it is also one of my alltime favorite albums from any artist, i feel yor sentiment ;)

Strange to hear the climax of Side One on its own and out of context, though I like what he did with it. Clodagh Simmonds, who also sang on this with Sally Oldfield, received credit for coming up with the lyrics that Mike eventually used.
Think i prefer this 7 inch version -its heavier in the mix with the guitars than the album version

After Tubular Bells Omadawn is the best. Just amazing love this 7" mix.
i think that Omadawn is a much more classical album and creation then TB. TB is there mainly because it was the first and the breakthrough.

I uses to listen it in loops while reading "l'ecume des jours" of Boris Vian.
The same carefree, innocent happiness at the beginning.
The same hidden anxiety, germs of a drama that will grow and pervade.
But no sorrow.
The glimpse of harmony is usually worse the absurdity of its transience.
And the fact that glimpse existed is eternal.
I am not quite sure, but I think it is an irish word for being silly. (I have read it in another comment somewhere.)
According to Oldfield's autobiography - Changeling - 'Ommadawn' is the Anglicised version of the galic word 'amadan', which means 'idiot'.

On my album mix it says he made up some gaelic words and nonsense- it means something like i want a cheeseburger or equivalent nonsense and did it on purpose so people would think it had an amazing esoteric meaning and it doesnt. This is my favourite album of his and I play it when I paint. I think after his indian experience his music was never the same and i find his music quite predictable now but the early stuff- totally surreal

also from 2:03 the bass is much more prominent and articulated than in official version. it gives so much power to the entire piece, the bass is one of the reasons i prefer this version

are you sure? she is also credited on the album, as well as Bridget st John, but I read somewhere years ago that Sally sang these particular vocals. I may be wrong :)
On the demo version, it's Sally singing Clodagh's Irish lyrics, but with the rerecording, he asked Clodagh to sing the Irish melody which we all know and love nowadays.
yes it is Clodagh Simmonds doing the vocals. Sally's voice is completely different. I'm not sure where or what Bridget St John's contributions are

@@XanAxDdu that is another version. I don’t know if this one has ever been put out on cd. This version however is one of my favourite pieces of music. Since I made a small mistake (as someone informed me in the comments), I might make an updated version of the video with correct info and try to clean up and upgrade the recording a little bit. stay tuned :)
It's not different at all from the studio album, it's just an except from it. Anyway, excellent Mike Oldfield.

This is like reading a few lines of Shakespeare instead of the whole play. MAYBE if it makes someone go back to get the context; otherwise, nooooooo!
I think it works quite well on it’s own (as do some of Shakespeare’s lines). Would be interesting to hear this version integrated in the whole album though, just as an experiment :)

Knebworth is amazing. Should be remastered, remixed (tone down the synths, lift up the guitars and that fantastic bass player) and made a box set as vinyl/cd/bluray/booklet combo. And with a T-shirt inside! (the one with glittery notes that Mike wears, of course) :)
I was brought up in Ireland as as such I did Irish Gaelic in school. I never understood the words here and now I know why. The words are nonsense and are NOT Irish. Only Ommadawn is vaguely recognisable. The proper word for idiot in Irish is amadán. The real words in Irish should be Tá daidí sa leaba. Daddy's in bed. Bhí an cait ag dól bainne The Cat's drinking milk. Is amadán mé I'm an idiot agus tá mé ag gáire And I'm laughing.
thank you for clarifying that, it is valuable info. for it was speculated that words are gibberish, but also a theory floats among fans and all over internet about the lyrics that I used in the video that they are the propper translation. now we know that they are either not the righ translation at all, or are coming from some other dialect/language, not Gaelic. very interesting, would be fantastic to know the real answer one day!
