I gotta defend my man Bob Dylan. His voice is an acquired taste, but he wrote some of the most beautiful, archetypal songs of the 60s folk movement. His catalogue is deep and full of songs about peace, protest and humanity. He's really a poet who sings his own work. I'm glad they included him. Plus, I like all the different voices and styles. They make it unique. Check out The Times They Are A Changin', Like A Rolling Stone, Mr. Tambourine Man and Blowin' in the Wind if you have any curiosity about Dylan. Re: the actor - - Dan Ackroyd (Blues Brothers). Re: Michael Jackson. He didn't just 'do it'. He co-wrote it. All the best.

I really shouldn't leave anyone out... they all are great. It's fun to see how in awe they are of the people singing, how great Michael is and so on... but THEN to see the look on their faces when Bruce, Cindy and Dionne Warwick open their mouths and they have no clue of who they are :D
This is the holy grail of the 80's, take time and listen to all of them and you will find music better than anything done today.
Someone who is in this video and never mentioned is Harry Belafonte, he contacted Quincy and suggested they should do this. Harry is also a great singer from before the 80's. Listen to "The banana boat song" and then have a look at the tribute they did for him during this session.
    th-cam.com/video/9sVSuxw9qZg/w-d-xo.html
And I can understand the comment on Bob... he don't know him or what he has done... and for some that kind of music is difficult to listen to and understand.
But Bob needed to be in this and he really wanted to be in this as the cause is something he has been working for all his life.

I just wanted to make this second comment to remind everyone... that the idea behind WE ARE THE WORLD was not by Michael Jackson all though this song and the reason behind it was the beginning opus in Michael’s on going charity work. Both Michael *&* Lionel Richie co-wrote this song *together.* The people behind the idea of this event was recording artist Harry Belafonte of Banana Boat Song, and fundraiser Ken Kragen. The famine in African was growing so rapidly that back in the day Africa was in that deep of a crisis that they need some speedy help somehow and their idea of having these legends come together to sing this song was probably one of the best groundbreaking ideas they could ever come up with. Genious 🤯

Diana Ross or Tina Turner big names in the music industry, Kenny Rogers and Willy Nelson, gods of the Country Music where every Cowboy is born with that. In the 80's their was not much difference, MJ got his godly status later on when all the other superstars vanished from the memory, leaving the fans behind. Each voice contributing to this song is different. Different sounding, different strengths, tones, texture, flavor. It's unfortunate that you label Bob Dylan's performance here as bad. He certainly participated when asked because he is more of a social activist probably than anyone else in that studio. Have you ever listened to ANY of his songs besides the few seconds in this one? Dylan is a legendary singer/songwriter who is a world-acclaimed poet. His voice is a unique instrument... not like a melodic violin, but more like a percussion instrument. How he places the phrasing... the lyrics... against the accompaniment in using his near-speaking voice in a song is masterful. People who only look for a melodic tone totally miss his greatness. You may not like his style, but you really should listen to one or two of his great songs to try to become a little better informed before simply labeling his performance here bad or just consigning him wholesale to the trash barrel.

I don't like bursting everyone s bubble but Bob Geldolf and Midge Ure started this whole thing.
Dec 84 Do They Know Its Xmas came out with all British artists.
Bob and Midge came up with the idea to raise money for the worst drought and famine Ethiopia had.
Hense the single. Then they contacted American side to join forces to create
    Biggest concert in my opinion.
Live Aid 13th July 1985. The single We are the World written by Michael and Lionel was for USA side getting artists involved, and recording this in one day March 85
This had also happened previously in London Dec 84 with Do They Know its Xmas.
An Englishman and a Scotsman started Live Aid.

Now please don't take me wrong, I love Prince . However, after the 1985 Grammy awards Quincy Jones asked all the major stars to come and sing on this charity song. He also said that he wanted the stars to put aside their egos this one night for such a great cause ( Famine in Africa). Prince, then at the height of his fame, was also a huge rival of Michael Jackson just couldn't do that. However, he did contribute a song to the USA For Africa album. He did say many years later that he wished he had done the song !

So many legends in one room with egos left at the door! I read the story why Prince wasn’t involved. This was recorded after the American Music Awards & everybody was invited to the recording. Prince just had a big night at the AMAs & it was rumored he didn’t like the song. He offered to play guitar on it but management said no! So Prince excused himself as being too sick to participate & submitted a different song later. Obviously some tension between him & MJ didn’t help. WE ARE THE WORLD was written by MJ & Lionel.
STEVIE WONDER IS PITCH PERFECT (based on research).

Cant let that bad singer comment pass bro, yeah to be fair Bob Dylan is a folk singer song writer but he does hold the acclaim to being the greatest and most important song writer of this and last generation ( 60's),included, check out a interview with Lionel Ritchie when he said it took a lot to get Bob Dylan to come down and do it and when he walked in the room everyone of those stars, Micheal Jackson, Diana Ross, Springsteen, stevie wonder etc all stopped what they were doing and turned in awe of him and Ritchie said shit hes here and now I have to go over and talk to him. But I do get what you were saying him and Willie Nelson stuck out a bit when it was a cross between pop and soul

As an aside I have watch a lot of reactions to this song and am so disappointed more don't recognize AL Jarreau the man who pioneered beat boxing...(he sang right before Bruce Springsteen)

I'd also say, always keep it real, even if it's unpopular. I respect reactors who say when they don't like something. I also respect reactors who find something good to say about everything they listen to, like Jayvee. Your subs are sending mostly their favorite songs, and of course we all want a pat on the head, but everyone can't like every single same thing, so diplomacy is the name of the game, I guess.
Like I said about Tom MacDonald, he's THE WORST. Reactors hear him for the first time and while it sounds like he's advocating racial harmony and equality, he is speaking in code to advance his racist/conservative agenda. And reactors are hearing him for the first time, like deer in headlights, not wanting to offend their subs., which I get, but I really wish more reactors would speak out when they hear his self serving, whyte privilege/sirpremysyt messages. If you want, check out Skiz, Jolah, or fantano for the real deal on TMD.

No, MJ DID NOT set up this whole thing. Pictures of the incredible suffering from the famine in Africa moved the legendary Harry Belafonte to get a humanitarian fundraising project going with the megastars in the music scene. He contacted manager Ken Kragen who suggested a record rather than a concert. They put the project into the hands of Quincy Jones.Quincy asked Linel Richie and Michael to write the song.In 1985 when this was done, every single participant...both those in the chorus and those with solo parts were bonafide stars and legends in.their own right and known for their unique talents. MJ was among them, with his own following, but hardly the be-all and end-all in music.
