I loved your calculation of Pogi's daily salary, but hey, he's paid not to sit in the office, but to ride his bike. You see where I'm going with it, right? According to Strava, he has ridden 11865 km in 2023, spending 314 hours in the saddle. Let's assume for a moment that all his rides were recorded, and that his average cadence across all rides is, say, 80 rpm (assuming some freewheeling is involved). This means he has performed 314x60x80=1695600 crank revolutions, earning almost 4 euros per crank revolution.
Hope you"ll crunch some numbers on tdf stats for the next show. As far as I know Jonas and Tadej have now finished 1 and 2 on a record 12 tdf stages. Previous record 9 stages back in 1929-31 I think. And finishing 1 and 2 in the GC four times should be a new record. Might even be some sort of record in Jonas, Tadej and Remco finishing in the top 3 on 4 stages in this Tour but I can't find any numbers to support that
#CaptionCompetition: "Yes Tadej, your coin did disappear, but you have to choose a fist!" I'm impressed by Dan's lyrical wit on this one. However, I almost had to flee from the room. Not because of Dan's performance (which I was able to endure), but rather because I once had the bassline from Stuck in the Middle With You looping in my head almost repeatedly for several months.
That wage comparison is crazy. Obviously the exposure of football worldwide accumulates billions in revenue compared to cycling, but Tadej and the peloton sacrifice more through their training time and perform more competitive hours/days annually more than a footballers. Cyclists should earn more for sure, way more impressive athletes.
Hey, that nice Orbea e-bike reminds me that we need to see Dan refurbish his cool old Raleigh moped. And I was never a fan of mopeds but that one is an exception. 50cc Honda Dax guy here half a century ago as an American teen in West Germany and I might buy the new 125cc Dax when it reaches us in the States. 😀
Congratulations to Freddy Energizer, the first proposal in hacks/bodges... that's a beautiful classical guitar there, near the bike. I'm splitting my time between these two hobbies as well. Nothing accompanies better a cycling sprint than a fugue by Bach :)
There isn't just a discrepancy amongst the world's top athletes based on salary, but also, frankly, bang for buck/danger money/effort. Ronaldo vs Pog? 90mins jogging around a pitch falling over, wailing, winking, missing every free kick he insists on taking, versus 6hrs in the saddle, in all weathers, burning 8000 cals, descents at up to 120kmh, idiot spectators, idiot motorbikes, and what's more, repeating it each and every day for three long weeks. Night and day difference in bang-for-buck. $220m/yr for Ronaldo is a joke. And don't get me started on the golfers.
As with everything, effort or skill isn’t the deciding factor at the end of the day. If the sport brings in more money, the players are paid more. Simple as that.
Using some of your arguments, why not the same salary for all cyclists? Same risk, identical load of work to be in a race... I'm not a fan of football, but it's a bit childish to compare salaries this way. Athletes make money based on sport industry they're in. Like I said, I'm not a football fan, but I admit that football (and other sports) are a bigger industry than cycling. Maybe if people start paying to be on the side of the road to see a bike race, like people pay to get in stadiums, cyclists can earn more 😅
@@bdkraem Exactly. And the salary is just the beginning. There's merchandising, product advertising, product endorsements and other brand promotions. Given the popularity of soccer vs cycling, the soccer players are going to pull down vastly more.
We know that some ex-pro cyclers end up as GCN presenters. What do ex-mega-pro cyclists like TdF riders do once they decide they're done with racing as a career?
Pinot retired to play around on his hobby farm, didn't he? Even on a few million a year, with good financial planning it's plenty enough to never work again in your life if you don't want to.

It all makes sense to me. Regardless of the difficulty of the sport of love of the person, it comes down to - how much money do they bring into the sport ( or the sport brings in itself)? Sports like Basketball, both Football sports, Baseball, all try to maximize profit through TV, sponsors and retail. Cycling (similar to Triathlon) can't seem to make that connection. Where can I get a Tadej UAE jersey? Who can even find a Colnago to buy (definitely not in the US)? AND... Many of the team sponsors have little to do with cycling, so there is a big loss there - ( Visma is a business software) Yes it brings in a good chunk of money for contracts but it restricts the bigger potential for contributions to the sport.
Cyclists are grossly underpaid but it is difficult to make the formula work. Can't sell tickets in general. Merchandise is limited. And while it is "cool" to wear a replica Lebron James Lakers jersey. No serious cyclists would be caught dead wearing a UAE team kit on the club ride unless maybe if they had 3% body fat and were the fastest in the club. Never ever a WC jersey. Possibly a replica bike but those have become so outrageously expensive few can afford one. Additionally, while football clubs can sell for $billilons cycling teams are always on the verge of failing. Remember Jumbo Visma last year??
