Underpowered sums up GM in a nutshell. Im a GM fanboy, but they really need to invest in a more powerful engine options across every lineup.
This is the result of the ramp down of ICE power trains as GM had been sure Electric was a sure bet going forward by 2030.
@@oscarkummerlowe3794I’m not at all anti EV and I understand the push there, but what the hell were they thinking? 2030? The charging is still too slow and the networks aren’t nearly sufficient enough for the majority of Americans.
Bring back the 2.0 Turbo... Or a 2.5L Naturally Aspirated. I know these crossover SUVs are a strive to improve on fuel efficiency, however, we need to have enough power for the car to get up and go with reasonable time. Ideal engine should be able to get up and go (like getting on a highway) quickly, while also maintaining at least 23 mpg on average. That could also have some influence with some sort of transmission used, but it should be able to get up and go because getting up to speed on a highway is dangerous as it is, having an underpowered drivetrain for the vehicle can be deadly.
We don't know the torque figures, yet. They might have gone for a more torquee engine over peak power.
175hp, 186ftlbs in cvt only 28mpg highway. Rogue's 1.5T is over 200hp, 225ftlbs and 37mpg highway. No excuse GM! >:|
@@BoopSnoot wow. That's booty cheeks.
Torque is 203 according to every internet source I have read for GM’s 1,5 turbo in the Equinox and Terrain. That is decent.
@@fizzlederp 186ftlbs for the CVT
The engine options for that thing are disappointing. I'm expecting at least 300hp, at least!
They distoryed the old model....
Yes, 175HP isn't a lot. But people don't seem to understand, these family SUVs aren't built for drag racing. 175HP is sufficient for daily driving in the city and highway.
So Toyota can squeeze out 300hp out of a 1.6L turbocharged 3-cylinder but GM can't be bothered to put out up to 200hp from a 1.5L turbo 4. Then they have the nerve to put said engine in something the size of a Terrain.
Even the Honda Civic SI 1.5 in a compact sedan makes 200 hp
Dude even my 12-year-old diesel C class has 205hp from a (biturbo) 4cyl lol.. 😂
@@aurorayoru5333it also blows head gaskets
A new prius makes 196 HP. Prime makes 220. This car is just funny.
Your comparing a small and light sports car to a heavy suv. The GR corolla and Terrain have two different purposes
Yea…that lack of power is surprising. I drive a 2014 Mazda6 6MT, and that has a 185-horsepower 4-cylinder.
Most Turbo 4-cylinders baseline around 220HP.
My car weighs 3,183 lbs. A 2023 Terrain weigh 3,400 lbs. That’s 10 less horsepower, 15 more torques, to carry over 200 more pounds….from a turbo! That’s sad.
They called it Terrain but they meant Paved Flat Road
I wonder why these overstressed econobox engines keep breaking when they're only hauling an ever bigger vehicle...
Yeah, most cars this size have around 250hp. This definitely needs that.
This new terrain barely makes more horsepower than a base model Corolla
The Terrains predecessor the Envoy, had a i6 that made 290 HP reliably (in 2002) & you could slap a turbo on them and make over 400HP (Trailblazer SS power) without doing anything serious to them. In fact the original Trailblazer SS Concept was that same inline 6 “Amera-Barra” but with twin turbos slapped on (with completely stock internals) to prove how durable and reliable of a design it was (made over 550HP), but GM was going to the LS3 in the corvettes & had a ton of LS2s laying around so they stuffed that in there (because GM can’t sell a car faster/more powerful than the boomer-mobile).
"slap a turbo" you know I really wish it was that easy to add over a hundred horsepower. but its not
Terrain’s predecessor is not the Envoy, the Acadia is what replaced the Envoy.
@@theprettyone1786 From what I research the Terrain and the Acadia are considered the successor of the Envoy
My Prius has 220hp and I still want a little more. How in the hell do they justify this in a much larger SUV. The design is worthy of more power.
GM is following Kia’s lead. “Flashy” interior, and shite drivetrain.
Its gonna have terrible fuel econ, and be worth $2500 in 2 years.
I don’t know about that because Kia’s seltos with the 1.6 L turbo makes 195 horsepower which is the smallest crossover they have
@@aurorayoru5333 Right, those boosted small displacement direct injected motors. How good are they after 20K miles? Or in hilly terrain?
@@matthoffman8162 Even Honda is having problems with the 1.5

Did GM get rid of the 2.0L this year?
we have a 2007 suzuki grand vitara.. it made 185 hp new, obviously not so much now. it weighs 4600 lbs. its plenty of power for me, as i have also been used to driving a 2009 smartcar. its enough power to get out of its own way and not be slow on the interstate..
Wow! How can you justify anything about this SUV. Your talking information from somebody else's article. You're just reading somebody else's work, and you have done nothing. Talk about being lazy.
Was thinking I’m not a fan of the tablet style screens that are not integrated into the dashboard. You should do redesigns on interiors too. Would like to see your take on that.
another pile oh gm epa crap with a tiny engine . they can keep all this over priced junk with over worked engines run run fast .CVT are just cheap belt drive junk run from them to
They should use the 2.0 that’s in the envision
The old 2.0 in the Malibu made 250hp. That at least needs to be an option here. It’s really too bad because this looks good in and out and would be pretty competitive with a better engine.
This engine is going to be woefully underpowered in something this size and likely keep this big in the rental car space. Total miss by GM as is shoving the Acadia/traverse/enclave down the 4 cylinder path (at least that’s getting 300+ HP)
The people buying this don't care about speed/power.
Any vehicle this size in 2024 should not have less than 200 hp
A lot of people do care about power no matter what car it is. I used to work in sales and many times, the first thing people would express is that they don't want something slow or would have a hard time merging onto the highway. Even older people who would appear like they didn't care about speed would often be turned away if a car felt sluggish or underpowered. When people are spending $40,000+ on a vehicle they don't want econobox power
@@sunshinelolipops1 My dad has a midsize sedan which is a Hyundai sonata 2015 with a 2.4 L and it’s sluggish with 185 and my mother has a 2012 Hyundai Sonata with 198 hp which is not sluggish and which is why my dad prefers the older one we have I couldn’t imagine how sluggish this new GMC terrain is with less horsepower than my dad‘s Hyundai Sonata which is smaller
@@sunshinelolipops1 not to mention the Honda Civic SI with a turbo a 1.5 L makes 200 hp but GM couldn’t manage to give it 200 hp even though it’s the same displacement with turbo
Looks good, underpowered ruins everything. Period.
Is it just me or does it look alot like a ford explorer...
V8 swap it and call it a Typhoon 😈
It’s an suv who cares lol
Why dont you review famous race cars
Best group B or Group C designs & which would you choose.
Like Ferrari lemans or GT40s
Best F1 car era appearance wise
Post aero Moto GP bikes
Best looking GTE touring car
Best looking indycar nascar era
Why limit to current production cars. Your eyes are good, see & judge all machines
Bro sketchmonkey, ur reviewing a generic GM suv why dont you review more out of the box stuff?
Like the new generation Volvo or Kenworth semi trucks
Or Sport bikes like
Ducati panigale or MV agusta
Or aircraft like F35, F22
Or war craft like Tanks like abrams, T14
Or best batmobile iteration
All of those are much more interesting than the GMC terrain.
tiful
That engine is really unfortunate. It makes less power than a 3 cylinder Bonco Sport.
Thats a damn shame! ANY SUV in this class needs at least 250hp or more!
My curiosity is there possible to do a 1.8 turbo engine with a different type of transmission
I started liking the Terrain, but the low power and all black exterior and interior are not for me. Coming from a 2008 Toyota 4Runner I miss the power rear window.
Especially when the 2025 Civic Hybrid pumps out 200 hp lol
Needs a diesel.
They literally got rid of the diesel option
Yes
It won’t be underpowered when they make it a hybrid.
Remember the old cars of years ago, they didn’t have much power, they were transportation not race cars.
totally agree, but for a car that meant to be an "Off road vehicle" it'll need a bit more HP and torque to make it reliable.
Sorry to say there isnt a current American model I would even consider today. Current reliability, functionality and design aesthetics are giving mid 90s vibes.
Underpower engine last longer
Turbo 1.5s have a history of being extremely unreliable.
So make it a... Sedan!
TSM = The Sedan Mafia!
Was looking to trade down to get out of a car payment and everything seems to be 3/4 cylinders now. Did the government put more restrictions/penalties on gas guzzlers? Either way, not having enough power to get out in traffic can be dangerous.
The old design looked better. The front looks newer and more in-line with the current line up.
This new one's headlights are squished and look like the old Canyon and Sierra.
