Thank you for doing this, my dad passed away last August in ryde and he's on your video on the bench near the start. It was great to see him thank you so much.
lived above the "Spiders web" cafe [132 high street] during the early 60. best rockers cafe ever. shame things change , but such great memories of all those friends.
Life pre-Covid!!! 0:36 - Ryde Bookshop - what a fantastic place this is!!!!!! I go there at least once a year. Sadly that part of Ryde always seems deserted compared to the rest. I suspect there's been a few changes in the shops since this was filmed. Peacocks here shut down. 15:34 - Gibbs & Gurnell Chemists - another great place. I've spend ££££s in there. Ryde seems to be full of elderly and disabled people. The old hotel on the left at the very end of the video is still in a poor state having been left abandoned for years and years (it's a listed building).
Looks like a really nice vibrant high street and what a lot of individual shops (its all chains where I live). Good luck to Ryde High Street for tomorrow's reopening ! Thanks for the film xxx
0:02 on the right is the best sweet shop in the entire world!! I was 6 when I lived in Ryde 1987-1989 and my Granddad had a toy shop on High Street just behind where this video starts. I think it was called Gamley's? I miss those days so much. Thank you for posting! I live in Canada now and seeing this makes me miss it even more.
thanks for showing this vid .it brings back memories .happy ones and sad ones .have relatives all over the island as my dad bless him was born here .in binstead .been watching some of your vids and they are just great .thank you
Love seeing mobility scooter parked outside pubs. Means owner has managed to walk inside and if he is not too pissed, will be able to return to scooter. However, he will then become a liability on 4 Wheels very soon
My parents moved the Isle of Wight in 2007, every year l visited them. I now take down my little boy (4). One of the first things we do when visiting is a trip to Wights chippy, stroll down the amusement to play on the 2p pushers, trampolines and inflatable slide. Play on Appley Beach and a drink at the Captain Table and feed the ducks. Counting down till July 🌞🌊⛱
Haven’t been to island 4 some yrs. I see by your video at 8.02 on the left the pub we use 2 go in. What is it called? I remember going downstairs from street into it. I can’t remember the brewery either.
Living in Ryde. This would have been the way that I would have walked to the beach many times over the years. brings back so many memories . hoping one day to see a stroll along the western side of the seafront. So glad I've found your site
