    I would memorize about the theorems and their proofs. I would recommend Counterexamples in Analysis by Gelbaum & Olmstead. It's a dover book on proofs by counterexample. There's about 13 theorems in there. Hope this helps you. Good luck man!

    Hey man i know this will probably get lost in the comments but I just wanted to say that your videos are fascinating to me despite never really liking math in high school. I’m now a 2nd year college student (i know not much of a difference) and i just finished calc 2 so i’m far from being able to appreciate the work you’re putting in but for some odd reason, i’m actually starting to like math. I look forward to learning it, i see these super foreign and complex problems on your channel and think to myself “how would i even start to solve this”. idk but sorry for the rant, i just wanted to say you’ve made me actually enjoy the subject. love you bro and best of luck

    • @towerhero8805
      @towerhero8805 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Consider a math minor! If you like calculus I’d definitely recommend pursuing It further.

    • @aufgeschlossen5110
      @aufgeschlossen5110 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In Asia, every math major takes Set Theory in the first year and Intro to Analysis in the second year. I think it's kind of strange to take Calc2 in the second year because calculus is not even a rigorous math but just some calculation. By the way, there's not even a course called Calc3 in Asia. We learn up to divergence theorem in "Calc2" as a freshman even though it's without mathematical rigor.

    • @towerhero8805
      @towerhero8805 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@aufgeschlossen5110 He only took "calc 2" in his second year because it is not a requirement for his major (probably). obviously as a math major or stem major (if he is not) it will be different.

    • @Quickyy
      @Quickyy 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I should probably clarify, i just finished my first year of college and am heading into my second year this fall. I finished calc 2 and will be taking calc 3 this fall quarter. Before I finish my second year I will be done with the calc series, diff eq, linear algebra, and discrete mathematics. (I'm a physics major :) )@@towerhero8805Also I will probably end up picking up a math minor since the only class I will be missing is complex analysis :D

    • @PhDVlog777
      @PhDVlog777  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thank you, I think Latex is a good skill to have because everyone uses it, and I wish there were classes (or at least some sort of workshop) that teaches it. If you go on to do research, definitely worth the time. But with that being said, I rarely use it. I wish I used it more.

    You should find friends who like the subjects and beg them to force you to learn some problems. Buy them lunch or something.
    I think I only passed because I kepted looking at new problems till the last moment, even on complex analysis. It's somewhat a game of guessing what they'll ask you and spending time making sure you're confident in that material. The old quals are honestly some of the best ways to study.

    For anyone who has been through a PhD program...has anyone every really been kicked out of a program for not passing qualifying exams? I went through a PhD program and passed my exams, however I have NEVER heard of anyone else that ultimately didn't complete their PhD.
    The reason I ask this, is because I lived through the fear of failing and gave up a great deal of myself in terms of mental health to pass the PhD exams and now I wonder if it was just a formality.

      it's a common algebra 2 topic

    • @AR-fp5xp
      @AR-fp5xp 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There are holes in this guys foundation and it showed from his solutions to the last qualifying exam. Although he realizes he cannot succeed through brut force memorization I think it has been ingrained into him from an earlier age and he does not know how to get away from it (although he tries, which is commendable). We have all been to the point in our undergrad and grad careers where there was some form of frustration but this guy is downright miserable. At the end of the day the beauty of math is the self fulfillment from discovering novel ways to solve problems and the joy that this brings. If you are doing this to get through exams and get through the day, complaining the whole way the likelihood that ou are not going to reach a point where all of a sudden that subsides and it is clear sailing is low. If he is this miserable just for qualifying exams he is going to exponentially more miserable in finding and completing his thesis. Then the brutal journey afterwards of finding a faculty position if that's what he chooses. It is better imho to do your best, know your limitations, assess if there were faults in your approach to mathematics in general and either take some time to step away and fix that or discontinue. I say this because because it is something I personally took a step back in between programs to make myself extremely strong foundationally and this method yielded quite substantial dividends. I wish him the best of luck and Hope's he passes but strongly advise reevaluating whether a career in academia is for him. There are many tech jobs that could want his skills so this is not the end of the line in his career. Good luck

    • @50Steaks68
      @50Steaks68 10 หลายเดือนก่อน
