I've never Op.10 no.3 at that tempo before. It's like I'm hearing it for the first time. It make so much more sense at that tempo.

+Ian Moore Some of my colleagues consider me indescribable, but I'm not sure "joy" is what they have in mind...but thanks for your generous comment!

Another set of great performances! I'm learning so much about the Chopin etudes as I watch these too! Didn't know the Op. 10 No. 3 was meant to be played so fast. I've seen some of my favorite, most risk-taking performers (Katsaris, Cziffra) play it at a very slow speed. Wonderful job, especially with the Ossia in the Godowsky edition :)

I used to play it too slow also (an awful over-sentimental recording of it decades ago). Thanks again for the comment!

I'd only ever listened to those "slow" recordings of this study that you mentioned, and I never understood the admiration for it. It seemed a little tedious and soporific to me and I was perplexed by people calling it the "most beautiful" etude or their favorite etude, because it was actually the only etude I never listened to. They say the melody is exceptionally beautiful, but I find it to be quite average among Chopin's melodies; I can certainly think of a few I find more inspired and stimulating.
At this tempo this piece is significantly more appealing and pleasant. Can't say it's my favorite, but it's at least not a chore to listen to anymore. Thank you for your performance.

i guess you dont like nocturnes hmm?

@@krzysztofq7420 Pieces can be slow and still maintain their appeal like the nocturnes, but I have to agree with him this tempo fits this piece much better it sounds much better. Chopin really knew what he was doing marking the tempo for his pieces, it's a shame that so many of them get altered significantly, they just sound worse whether it be that they are too fast or in this case too slow. (Rubato is great I'm not talking about that, I'm referring to how the tempo of an entire piece is changed like in this case.)

I'm surprised no one's raving about how beautiful the Godowsky version is here. It's so incredibly beautiful, especially those base notes and harmonies on the descent (e.g. 11:16). I don't know if it's just the novelty of the piece, but right now I think I like Godowsky's more than the original!

I’m with you. Personally I feel that the godowsky version with technically *fewer* notes than the Chopin version is easier on the ears. The lack of right hand allows the melody to sing more since there are fewer massive chords to dominate the sound, as does in the Chopin.

ABC-FM played an excerpt from your new Tall Poppies CD last week and I called TP and ordered it immediately.
It arrived today and I have spent much of the afternoon listening to the CDs and watching your youtube videos while following the Godowsky scores. I have enjoyed every minute and found the videos fascinating and elucidating !
I left a message for Ara to ask him to pass my personal congratulations on this herculean feat.
Thank you David. I'm looking forward to the instalments to come !

As always, Db does wonders for any beautiful melody too. Really love what Godowsky did with this one, though op 10 no. 9 must be the best ones. Thank you David for these wonderful videos.

Personally, I'm surprised by how good this piece is at that faster tempo, but I also liked the first and last parts at the slower tempo. I'm surprised by the fact that both tempos sound equally good. Very good performance.

Hmm I like the faster speed overall, I find it more enjoyable to listen to, however the slower tempos do allow more time for the piano body to hold the resolving chords, like at 2:49

Truly a composer mind you have! In two, not in four! (Just was teaching how to feel the Pathetique Beethoven opening in 4, not in 8) So refreshing to hear the "slow" etude more as a Moderate Etude. I think I tried to perform a more moderate tempo as well.

Thank you! I always try to follow a composer's instructions, especially regarding tempi.

The faster tempi may have made much more sense on the pleyal pianos of the time, which had very little comparative sustaining action. Not an excuse to not follow Chopin's tempo markings though!

Incredible set of video lectures on the Chopin/Godowsky Etudes! Tremendous resource for piano students and amateurs. Can't wait for the next set on the opus 25 Etudes.
By the way what metronome are you using in this video?

+Jonathan G. da Silva (Johnny Wolff) Thanks for the comment! The metronome is made by Seiko called "Pick Boy". I've had it for ages, so they may not be made anymore.

I hate the slow=beautiful argument, my favorite recording of Mazeppa is Emil Van Sauer's, one of Liszt pupils, and it's surprisingly fast in the middle section contrary to most of what we see today.
