The Grommet team discovers the World's Coolest Rain Gauge for Rain Measurement. It is a modern twist on an old concept. It is a floating rain gauge that uses the Archimedean principle of water displacement.

Thanks for the great suggestion, we will look into how we can add that.

it woul be nice if pricing and links to purchase were included in your videos. i love the show casing. ive purchased several items already and adding the price and purchase weblink your video description would help my buying experience. Thank you! :)

Nice looking gauge, and it's nice the artisan uses as much "local" material as possible to fashion them. With such a nice product, it's a shame the narrator can't pronounce "Archimedes" or "buoyant."
Back in the days before computers and the internet, I used to think such people were just lazy or too busy or careless. Since it now takes only seconds to lookup and HEAR correct pronunciation of any common word, that opinion is exponentially magnified.

How do you pronounce the word, "poinsettia"? Chances are pretty good, you're doing it wrong.
I'm fairly well educated. I confess that I mispronounced a number of words for years before discovering my error (restaurant). Usually a result of becoming familiar with a term in text but never communicating verbally with another human being on the subject. Maybe I was lazy because I didn't make the effort to look up every word in a dictionary. But the fact remains, there are many words which are commonly mispronounced...

The same could be said for your reasoning: English is inconsistent enough that almost any of its almost 2 million words could be mispronounced by "sounding it out" despite the agglutination of archaic & arcane rules. Most words we learn by context, verbal or written. It is only if we see evidence of inconsistency that it is reasonable to 'look it up'. It is generally impractical for most children to explore much outside of our familial literacy before many pronunciations become 'ingrained' or even 'ossified' so as to be difficult to change, especially our rarely used words. The meaning of words is important, and the confusion of imprecision and ambiguity can be frustrating for all of us. I just soldier on, smugly & silently enjoy my superiority to the hundreds of idiots in the world who did not have parents as literate as mine, and admire those who did. ;-)

I love how it looks but needs more information about how it floats

IT'S A NICE MODEL OF RAIN GAUGE BY USING SIMPLE PHYSICS

It's a graduated transparent blue polycarbonate cylinder.

Without a good explanation by the designer, the design suggests a poor understanding of the practical aspects of Archimedes' principle, not to mention the needs of a gardener or weather watcher.
. If you know the inside cup diameter, the outside tube diameter as well as the tube & float weigh, we should be able to calculate the minimum rainfall needed to "float" the gauge tube. At that point the principle would become useful. I could guess a half inch or more! Lacking that I suspect (s)he did not describe how to adjust the gauge for accuracy once that threshold is reached, so I will: Put an inch of water in the cup. Adjust the float in the tube so the tube floats at 1". Repeat with 2" of water. If it is accurate, you are done, and also know that the threshold is less than 1".
. If it is not, repeat the procedure for 2" to 3". If it is not, the cup & tube diameters have probably been poorly chosen/made, and the tube is rubbing or catching on the edge of the cup. Send it back.
. PS: Another approach to finding the rainfall threshold:
    1) Pour water slowly into the hole in the float inside the exact bottom of the tube.
    2) When it starts to move up (not just wobble), remove the gauge.
    3) Measure the depth of the water in the cup.

This thing sucks. My neighbor and I both have one. They both measure about twice what any other gauge measures. No way to calibrate it either. Don't waste your money. It's a great concept except it's worthless.

I agree, but is the error linear or irregular? A constant of the error can be adjusted by the position of the float in the tube.

    This gauge is very inaccurate!
