    Switzerland used to have one of the worst heroin addiction rates in Europe, until the state opened clinics giving unadulterated heroin to addicts for free with clean needles. . This stopped them spending all day robbing or dealing for their fix & enabled them to hold down jobs & lead stable family lives. The clinics provided support helping addicts to quit. & many did. More importantly, as the addicts had no motivation to deal, there were fewer new users drawn into the habit as the black market collapsed. Free Heroin, crazy idea right? Well It has payed for itself many times over.

    Years ago I had a coworker who was a recovering heroine addict. He was a hard worker and a good dude who was trying to recover for his daughter’s sake. I know for a fact he would have sought out and benefited heavily from the kind of government aid Vaush talks about here. Last I heard of him was a few months after last I saw him, another coworker told me he saw him being carted off a public transport train on a gurney. Along with decriminalization, I think having more options as far as the types of programs/services available (that aren’t just for the mega rich) so that any addict can get the help they need while feeling both comfortable & engaged is crucial to this fight.

Climate Change has been the biggest inexorable threat to mankind as a whole since, perhaps, the Cold War finally cooled off. And yet, at least here in America, the Government is doing jack-shit about it. Slightly more jackshit than when scientists first started warning us about this back in the 50s or whenever but still, compared to what you would imagine people would do once they realized there was something that was going to destroy the only viable planet we have to live on? Years ago my great uncle got into heroin. He lived in a different state than all of us so when he ran off we had zero idea where he was. When he got arrested for possession he called my grandma (who was still the closest to him) to bail him out. She said that she'll do that in person, but then she's taking him to a rehab center. He hung up and then called his brother for money the next day so I guess he was only in jail for a day.
    He died about a month later. He overdosed, yeah, but he was also sharing the same needle with another guy every time. If there was an injection site program at the time I do wonder if he'd still be alive today. We'd lie and say that the state he lived in didn't have one, but ours does, and we'd be able to work slowly from there. (I dunno where he'd stay though.)
    I also lost my aunt from methadone. (What they give you when you're trying to get off of heroin.) I was fourteen at the time and I didn't find out the details until I was in my 20's. Though thinking back I can see the bread crumbs- she'd ask everybody for money and say that it was for food or something. And she stayed with her abusive boyfriend (who also died) because he's the one who had access to the drug. Again if there were injection sites, she wouldn't have needed him and I think it'd be a lot easier for her to not only get off of it, but for us to help her through it.

    To the people who refuse to believe there is a level of willpower needed to quit an addiction, you're missing the point. The willpower needed can be overwhelmingly high, which is why these support systems are so crucial. People need the resources to lessen the willpower ceiling in order to quit.

      It's generally true but it's not always true. Ibogaine and potentially some iboga alkaloid analogues (such as tabernanthalog) for instance can instantly reverse withdrawal symptoms of opioids while also psychologically inhibiting further intake, effectively fast-forwarding both the physical and psychological dependence on the drug.
      There are other examples for different drugs, and of course such methods won't work for every addict, but it is certainly possible to treat addiction medicinally without much (if any) willpower, because addiction is ultimately still a reversible change in brain state.

    • @Alexander-cg1ey
      @Alexander-cg1ey ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dandelion3391 Of course Ibogaine has had some amazing results. But that's part of the support system too. That falls under therapeutics, which are an important step to lowering that willpower threshold needed to pass in order to break addictions.

  • @Fizzypopization
    @Fizzypopization 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    As a truth teller we also need to acknowledge that not everyone experiences withdrawal and that the majority of people can recreationally use without issue. Also things like cocaine don't typically give withdrawal symptoms which is why you can take your Ritalin one day and forget about it the next without issue. So withdrawal isn't even 100% a functional part of addiction. I firmly believe people excessively turn to drugs because life becomes unbearable to them. Those who can use without addiction generally see life as still positive and worth pursuing. We need to fix our society and the hopelessness because that is also the same reason people are shooting others.

    To be clear, there is NO scientific definition of what a "hard" drug is...
    One of the basic principles of Portugal's decriminalization regime is that there is no such thing as "soft" vs. "hard" drugs (which was maybe not such happy news for users of the former).

    • @dandelion3391
      @dandelion3391 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure, soft vs hard drugs are socially constructed categories based on how much societal harm a drug causes (or is perceived to cause). "Drug" itself is also a social construct by the way since there is no consistent definition of what it even is.
      A drug is a chemical substance that crosses the blood-brain barrier and exerts pharmacological functions. Don't mean to alarm you, but you and I eat those in food every day. Chocolate alone has several mildly psychoactive constituents. If you eat raw cacao this becomes very obvious.
      Are chocolate consumers unhappy that Portugal doesn't make a categorical hard/soft distinction between hard drugs and the psychoactive drugs they consume in small amounts everyday? Doubt it.
      Even if you take a more strong drug, like caffeine, do coffee drinkers care that these are technically socially constructed categories? No.
      All drugs should be considered on a case by case basis. And if the prototypical "soft drug" is cannabis, then what there IS scientific evidence on is that the dangers of this drug are very minimal compared to a prototypical "hard drug" like heroin. So what does it matter that there is no scientific definition for these societal terms? Should chocolate, coffee, or cannabis users view such news from Portugal as something to be unhappy about?

    I differ a little in the idea of addiction. My take is that usually you are an addict even before you take any drugs. You walk around feeling a little off, depressed or maybe your brain just wont shut up. Then you take a drug all that goes away. It solves all your problem just like that. Someone said "don't ask why the drugs, ask why the pain".

    its super interesting vaush doesnt have an addictive personality at all, since I and a lot of other adhds have that as a symptom of adhd. although it seems like he doesn't really understand how this works with his adderall comments, because giving an adhd person adderall is an insta cure for addiction, and the best thing you can do to help a person with adhd who has an addiction. ive never had any drug addiction, because well, I have an addictive personality and anxiety so ive always been very avoidant, but the first day I took adderall, I didn't crave caffeine. I didn't crave masturbating. (adhd induced hypersexuality is a common form of adhd causing addictiveness). certainly drug addicts have to do a lot more to deal with getting off heroin and stuff, but I do find it interesting that I went from hardcore all-my-friends-were-concerned caffeine addict to NO WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS with my magic no addiction pills. and by magic I mean my brain finally has dopamine, instead of desperately craving and constantly impulsively doing whatever will give me anything.

      @OP Interesting, though. I wonder if Adderall would do anything for mine. It's impossible to test, as in my country Adderall is impossible to acquire, but as far as ADHD is concerned Ritalin doesn't seem to do much for me and modafinil's only slightly useful.
      Edit: On the other hand, at least I don't feel personality effects too strongly. Cravings and slightly impulsive buying habits are relatively easy to suppress, and more or less all I have an issue dealing with is starting tasks, more so than finishing them. Be nice to live somewhere with less ridiculously backward cultural preconceptions around psychoactives though, because this place has one of the worst, dumbest drug wars in the world.

      @@FelisImpurrator that's really awful you dont have access to medical treatment :(( it's pretty common for ritalin to be a less effective treatment for ADHD, because if I understand it correctly, Ritalin and other methylamphetamines are just reuptake inhibitors, meaning the dopamine you do have stays in yours brain longer, whereas stuff like both of my stimulant meds, adderall and vyvanse, both inhibit reuptake and release more dopamine.
      treatment for adhd is definitely stigmatized here in the USA, I've always known ive had adhd but never got treatment until now, being 20 years old, after actively seeking it once I was an adult. but I'm very glad and privileged to now have the medical access that I do, and it's pretty wild and new to see... people that are just less privileged deal with things I got over, but they can't because what I did just isn't an option.
      keep in mind adhd is very responsive to making an adhd friendly environment for yourself, so I hope you keep finding good ways of living ur best adhd life, therapist can help a lot with adhd too which surprised me at first but its very true, be well and good luck comrade

Most people don’t stay clean after getting locked up briefly they need rehab or like mat (medical assisted treatment I just want people to stop dying. I’ve never done heroin, but I was an alcoholic and a cocaine addict for many years. Now I work at a drug and alcohol rehab and I’ve been clean for over three years. Decriminalization and safe injection sites can literally only help. Step two is Medicare for all free at point of service so anybody can attend a residential treatment facility, meet with a therapist, and get adequate psychiatric medication if they need it. Step three is federally guaranteed housing so drug addicts who have difficulty staying sober and can’t live in a sober home at least have a roof over their heads.

Drugs are nowhere near as likely to cause addiction as people think. I.e. crack only has a 5% higher rate of addiction than alcohol, despite it’s primary user-base being people predisposed to addiction.
    Addiction can also be prevented much more easily than cured. You can’t really help an addict in terms of getting clean. Sending people for “help” doesn’t actually work in most cases.

      @dandelion3391 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I 99% agree but it's worth noting that the drugs you listed (besides speed) are not really that addictive.
      MDMA is a strong stim that can cause psychological addiction in some cases sure, but it causes massive serotonergic downregulation and tolerance such that it rarely does. You can't abuse MDMA at the same rate as meth or speed, it simply will not work, and most people will find that even doing it more than once a month will make them "lose the magic" and have terrible side effects.
      Ketamine can likewise sometimes be psychologically addictive, but rarely, since it doesn't release any monoamines (i.e. dopamine, serotonin). In fact it's often used to treat addictions and can in some cases reverse deficits associated with stimulants via NMDA antagonism.

    I still disagree about your first bit regarding the use of emergency powers. I agree the ability to have that power is dangerous, but I also think that just like with various other powers currently available to your own government, it is necessary, albeit needs to be heavily scrutinized and has to immediately trigger review by as impartial entities as we can get. In your own country you were able to do what we did immediately and to less effect. By contrast as someone who had friends living downtown Ottawa, it was literally their homes being held hostage by people. The use of emergency powers was by and large required in Ottawa as multiple agencies got brought in and coordinated in such a way that allowed for essentially no blood shed. The police were down right too non aggressive, but the reality is it is more effective. This wasn't the first time something like this happened exactly but this time it was actually handled well. These powers are fine so long as they're held with appropiate checks and balances. The ability to protest is crucial without a doubt but we all struggle to find the line between protest vs riot VS occupation. These right winger nut jobs weren't calling for policy change but government Change. Would that qualify as insurrection?
    We got our problems here but having those emergency powers are needed. When shit hits the fan there and we start taking American refugees en masse, those same powers will be triggered to allow rapid set up, bank accounts, you name it.
    Also your love of moose rocks haha they're cute asf. Oddly most of our moose seem to be on one of our islands haha.
    As for the wolf comment about hunting them, generally apex predators aren't the ones you need to manage and are key stone animals. It's why when they reintroduced wolves into certain areas biodiversity actually goes up and overall health does as well.
