I’m 72 years old and have SPD (sensory processing disorder) dentist are and always and have been a huge struggle for me. Between the bright lights, high pitched sounds & smells it’s challenging!

Hmmmm yes the smells are the worst for me. For the light they use dark sunnglasses for me and the sounds, I use my mp3, headphones and LOUD music.

My Autistic son used to go to a pediatric dentist that had tvs on the ceiling above every dental chair linked to dvd/bluray players and all kids got to pick movies each visit and he offered several types of anesthesia, gases or freezing. My now grown son misses that.

  • @kerirofkahr2374

My daughter was 10 and was fine going to the dentist. She always did well until we had to change her dentist due to our insurance and the new dentist didn't allow anyone to go back with her. Hesitant I allowed it cause they said it was policy and kids did better without a parent there. On her 2nd visit they pulled a tooth with her crying hard and the dentist actually told her stop being a big baby and with a harsh tone. She was terrified after when she was telling me what happened. When I asked about it I was told he told her to stop crying she wasn't a baby meaning she was 10 a big girl. She is now terrified of going to the dentist. One bad experience can ruin it for a child. So picking a dentist is so very important. All the info was super helpful so thanks for sharing. Your family is so special and I love all your videos and watching Abbie grow and learn new things. ❤❤❤

I'd suggest looking at dental schools if you have any near you too. I'm in NC & East Carolina University (ECU) has a dental school (that will take insurance & Medicaid) & does sedation dentistry on EC individuals & other's that suffer from Alzheimer and dementia and different sorts like that. ECU also owns our hospital now, too. Which, of course, is where the dental school does the sedation part at.

So Glad for you found a dentist office that works for you! That’s hard to do no matter specific medical your needs or age! Hope she keeps liking it, they seem awesome! My little nephew also really likes his pediatric dentist that specializes in autistic children.

  • @juliej2263

We are lucky to have a pediatric dentist in network and the staff is caring and meets the kids where there are at. My son does not like to lie on his back in the chair either so they clean and check his teeth standing at up by a sink just like we would brush his teeth at home. When he was little, I would even bring the step stool we used at home. Anything that would help reproduce a familiar setting.

You guys explain things so very well. When people ask me questions about my son, I think I overexplain, and it gets confusing. So I always recommend they watch a few videos of yours to make it easier to understand. Yesterday's vlog and today's explain so much, and they came at just the right time, so I sent them to my aunt who had questions. You're doing a fantastic job!

I carry a copy of the guardianship document from St John’s County in a ziploc (in case anything leaks in my purse). I too won’t allow my verbal but ID daughter to see any medical professional alone. That document gives me the right to be with her. You will need to scan this and send it to every insurance or provider including your pharmacy or they won’t talk to you even though you have to pay the bills. Keep a copy in your vehicles hidden in case of emergency. 18 is a whole new world.

He is able to read 25 words now. Yay🎉😊❤

Abbie did so well at the dentist. I don't do so well at the dentist. Just the thought or mention of it makes me scared and freak out. In the future, I have to get a referral from a dentist to have my teeth removed by an oral surgeon at the hospital I go to. Luckily, my cardiologist doctor recommended I go under anesthesia. So I'll be asleep throughout the whole process.

We have to try nitrous oxide for my son because the sedation dentist couldn't get him in until August and he needs 2 root canals. Myself or my husband go into every appointment with him. He is 17 but has the mental capacity of a 10 year old. I'm so glad Ab is progressing so well!! Way to go Ab!!🥰🥰 Have a great Saturday everyone!!🧡🧡

    • @lindahorner6295

Nitrous oxide might work for your son and I hope it does in addition to the novacaine. It is applied through a mask over the nose . Nitrous Oxide wears off quickly once the Dentist switches it to oxygen.
Follow your son's DR. Recommendations. If you have questions get referrals from other special needs parents re DR. recommendations.

My son would bite the dentist and the hygienist... she wrote him a script and put him on anxiety meds before he would get there, and they give him gas. It's a must if they don't want to be bit. LoL he just turned 16 and now I'm worried if they are going to let him stay with her or make him change dentists. And I am ALWAYS with him in the dentist/ doctors.

i had been working in early intervention, about a year after a child C graduated from my program, i got a distressed call from the parent. he needed dental work and the general dentist just wanted to severely restrain him. He was 4 and would have hurt himself fighting the restraints. I was able to refer them to autism friendly dentists. its sad that some dentists just don't try to get it. i understand not having the skills or resources to deal with all disabilities, but at minimum, you should have the intelligence to refer to someone who does-and not demand to be allowed to harm the child.

I live in Massachusetts and my insurance alot of places do not take and one of them is the place to go for children and teens with special needs. I have no idea who to talk to I have asked his pediatrician and his dentist about help with like payments like a payment plan and they don't know. I just need to get the dentist who knows children with certian medicall issues and how I can keep my son from him having server anxity and ticks. Tried all the dental stuff long time ago,but this is different it's wisdom teeth, and I'm very scared he's never ever had anything for him to be put under no surgery or broken bones. Just don't know. When the doors open, get OUT!! I got out .. finally. The telephone booth📞 was across from the elevator. Mom was talking to my aunt, telling her we were finished.
Woman came RUNNING 💨 in, STRAIGHT to the elevator, pushing alllllllll the buttons, trying to make the DOORS CLOSE. Her hair was CRASZY, face had streaks on it (scratches or mascarea?!!) She was CRYING!! SCARED to DEATH!!! 1--Minute later, guy came running 💨 in and went straight into elevator, as the doors CLOSED!! Turned around to look out the door of the bldg. POLICEMAN came, with a GUN POINTED INSIDE THE BLDG!!!! ... Guess guy was trying to ATTACK the woman and police were chasing him (them)!!! We got out, home safe & sound. I was 5 then. I'm 54 now. HATE the dentist. And 🛗 ELEVATORS!!! Also, most of my health problems now .. are DENTAL!!! Grrrr !!

And they gave him laughing gas but the thing that they had in his mouth caused him to start choking, and instead of them stopping, he was turning red, and I had to push them out the way to sit my child up. it bothered me to think what would have happened had I not been in that room. It was already a place that took certain type of insurance. It was old and I was not bringing my son back there ever again. Plus I have worked for dental labs and let me tell you the amount these places are charging. All of us are ridiculous. I would do the billing and I would see a 300% markup on things like crowns and bridges and it was just ridiculous.

Well done Abbie on your visit to the dentist. So happy you all feel confident with Abbie's dentist. Asa and Cilla great advice and information from you both to assist other families. Blessings.

I'm 20, I had to switch from pediatric gi to adult and I like to bring my mom to appointments because I'm horrible at listening and just feel more confident and like I can speak for myself with my mom there. Well my first visit to my adult gi doctor he pretty much told me I shouldn't bring anyone and I should be coming alone. I kinda just brushed it off and said "alright"
I guess I'm not sure where I'm going with this but do you guys think my doctor was put of pocket with that comment? Like yes I am an adult and should be able to do it alone, I just like to have another ear to listen and maybe remember things I missed.

The dentist was/is a tough one. My son still wears his sunglasses and vibes earplugs for the noises.

Priscilla you would not trade your husband for anything. The dentist I was going to retired and I was very concerned about the people who took over his practice. So I understand stressing out at the dentist

My questions is if abbey had to have. X rays or anything. If abbey had a accident or hurt her self how Do u teach abbey or like hospitals or other places that she isn’t regularly at Does abbey still do shopping therapy and that sort of thing my other question is abbey favourite places and things. She loves or like to do or go to. And my other question is do u get a income for abbey through the government as every country is different. And how do u afford to go to dentist 🦷 for abbey like just knocking abbey out would cost And that How do other parents get these. If they only have a special needs child like abbey. Cos everything is going up in prices in our world my other question is does abbe6 have a kids card account for her to teach her money and to spend stuff .

Put your tongue to the top of your mouth and it will go away! I’m lucky enough that there is a amazing dentist who does any work with my son asleep! Our is Special Smiles in Philadelphia Pennsylvania! This is for disabled people! My son doesn’t talk about life much!
