- Rocko's Modern Life was a fantastic show for many reasons, but one of my favorites has to be it's colorful cast of immediate side characters. This show had a great way of giving it's side characters interesting quirks that made them so much more interesting in my opinion. Certain characters had a charming quirkiness to them. Meanwhile, others had a rather abrasive quirkiness. When I think of that abrasive quirkiness, the first character to come to mind is definitely Ed Bighead. He's definitely got a really abrasive and mean side to him and no episode epitomizes that side quite like this episode. That's why today, on our nostalgic walk down memory lane, we're going to check out The Rocko's Modern Life Christmas Special.

What really bothered me about Mr. big head is that he seem to want a Christmas were nobody was happy so if he got what he wanted, he would’ve been kicked out of his own dream of a monochromatic thunder storm Christmas, where they’re playing the news on all the stations. All the toys have been recalled all the trees have died, and all the turkeys are diseased.

It's actually raining on Christmas Eve in Minnesota, it's very unnatural being it's supposed to be snowing and very cold
The kid screaming and crying was always my favorite part--the way he does it is just so FUNNY:):) This special always came in fourth for me after 'Doug's Secret Christmas', 'Doug's Christmas Story', and 'The Rugrats Santa Experience'...imagine if Rocko and Heffer had to be Santa like Stewie and Brian! Breaking into the house, messing everything up, realizing they're at the wrong house--I can just hear Heffer say "This isn't even Santa anymore! This has been a home invasion!"
Man, haven't thought about this in a long time. Very underrated Christmas special IMO.

I'm guessing that on the grape vine, the "troll" part came before and lead to the "criminal" part. One person confused elves and trolls. Than someone else, a little more "well-versed" said 'Well, trolls are trouble-makers, right?' and maybe added trouble making in the description, which could've than been exaggerated into being criminal.
I don't hate X-mas but as a retail worker my out look as been tainted a bit. At least I have my good childhood memories.
I do hate Christmas. I have to spend a month and a half being told by strangers that how i "would be happier if I had kids/religion in my life". At least the uploader acknowledged that people use this time of the year to shove their beliefs down others' throats.
Plus gift giving holidays take the joy out of the experience, turning displaying an act of compassion into something formal and structured, thereby causing stress.

Yes this is one of my favorite holiday episode. I love how it played out. Rocko is one of my favorite cartoon and this episose is one of it best.

Anyway not only is it my favorite animated Christmas special; it's also my favorite episode of the entire series!

Yeah Mitch is my favorite character too, the way he talks always makes me laugh so hard I cough 😂 You know that the voice actor of Mr Bighead is the same one who does the voice of Ickis from AHHHHH Real Monsters!! It's a good Christmas episode that reminds us that Christmas is about being around great friends and sharing positivity and don't let the negative nancies ruin anything for you. Love this special so much! 😍 I remember seeing it on Nickelodeon back when they had the late night '90s Nick block. Must've been in my late teens or early twenties, and the episode really resonated with me. Also can't believe they close it out with an instrumental of Auld Lang Syne! Makes Rocko *even cooler* somehow.

I never met anyone in my entire life that hates the holidays,but if I did,it would make me feel sad cause to me they don't like the joy and happiness that holidays are supposed to bring,but I'm glad I never met anyone like that,but still,I thought holidays were supposed to be enjoyed,I don't want anyone to feel angry or sad during the holidays

Love this show and this Christmas special! Also you may notice but the trio of Rocko, Heffer and Filburt are the O-Town equivalent of Mickey, Donald and Goofy plus Ed Bighead as Pete!

There are times when Mr. Bighead showed a caring side: Nothing To Sneeze At, Magic Meatball, Closet Clown, and a couple of others.

Spend it every year alone
Mr Bighead is just miserable, but I get why. All his life hes been told his dreams are dumb and has been put on a rail for his whole life. Always being told no and not having a fay of actual joy ruins you. Come the show and everyone NOW gets to enjoy the stuff he has ALWAYS been told no to? It'd drive anyone to be miserable and try to drag everyone down; if he couldn't be happy, why should anyone else should? Or at least feel just as miserable as he was for years, even if it's just 1 day.
Again, dont like his mentality, but i get it
this was a really surreal episode even by Rocko standards

Crazy how the rumors got to the point of even the Elves being scared of going to the party when the whole point was for everyone to want to keep the elves out
I feel like the elves just represented the kind of cheeriness Ed detested, which is why he initially hated them...really had nothing to do with the race.
I mean, I get we live in the age where everything gets over analyzed and dissected, and some people find that entertaining...maybe some day I'll 'get' the need to do that to all these classic things.
Regardless, loved this special since it's first airing, watched it every year since. Yea, it's got a slew of innuendos...but that's pretty much where Nickelodeon was back then. People who did these cartoons didn't used to feel the need to coddle and talk down to kids in the 90's.

I'm one of those people who HATES Christmas and can't wait for it to be OVER. We don't celebrate so it's a hard time for me. Trouble is over here that Christmas doesn't seem to stop untill mid January! Christmas day was like, a week ago, and people STILL have their lights and decorations up, just WTF?

I get that it’s just a cartoon, but why does Rocko own that sled in the first place if (according to Mr. Bighead) it hasn’t snowed in O-Town in decades? It’s well established that Rocko is a recent immigrant from Australia. I doubt that he brought it with him, because I’ve BEEN to Australia during what passes for winter there. I was in shorts half the time!
Maybe he lived in the blue mountains. it snows there a bunch I think. only been there once myself during the snow. although rest of country is dry.
You know as an Australian I find the opening a little odd. The writers probably didn't think of it, but being an Australian immigrant Rocko would have grown up celebrating Christmas without snow. I can see him being disappointed by no snow but he shouldn't need it? Just a weird cultural difference I guess haha.
My feelings on Christmas can best be described by Heinz Doofenshmirtz.
"I really don't hate Christmas. Now it isn't that I like it; at the most I feel ambivalence."
"Because, what is there to hate, I mean, it's really so subjective."
"The most that I could muster is complete and total apathy."

Why was Peaches, the Satan of this universe, in the crowd shot at Rocko’s home? I know Rocko is nice and wants to invite everyone, but why him?
Good question.
I rhink if you look at Mr. Bighead in a vaccum he could be considered a racist and this episode is a perfect example but having the whole series on DVD Mr. Bighead is more of an elitist. We see this in the way he treats Rocko, Heffer, and Filbert calling them juvenile whatevers. Or when we see Mr. Bigheads son is the creator of the most popular show on tv and is the head of a studio but because it's for kids and not a company like Conglamo he says he has no son. Even when Mr. Bighead is having a mental crisis and sleepwalking thinking he's a pirate this is awoken when he and his wife attend an Opera about a pirate. So yes Ed Bighead thinks he's gods gift to the world but he truly hates and looks down on everyone he feels is below his status that's not to says he feels that way about his bosses who are clearly above him he actually kisses their feet but Rocko and crew no he hates them, end of the day I'd that's more an elitist than a racist to me. But either way he is a jerk.
Except for his love for Bev and Ralph. That's his soft spot.
