I stayed in Venice for a week when I was 27 and back then our package trip made staying in the Hotel Luna which is just off St Mark’s Square affordable. Now it’s a 5 star deluxe place. I remember going out into the square early on a Sunday morning when the campanile bells were ringing and there were hardly any people were about. I thought I’d died and gone to heaven. Another highlight was the Palladio day where we took the vaporetto and visited all the churches he designed then we went back in the evening for a concert of the Four Seasons in San Giorgio Maggiore ........magical. We also visited two of the smaller islands, Burano and Torcello. That holiday will stay with me forever. Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.

as a European i think sometimes we take our architecture for granted as we see it everyday, its amazing what people have built, theres also something about the crazy way our road systems / pathways have evolved that may not be as practical as a grid system, but certainly are much more magical and create a sense of wonder about what could be around every corner.

You should not sit in a bridge when eating. It becomes a nuisance for locals as you clog a path. Streets in Venice are already narrow, let alone the bridges.

OMG I never expected you to reply Eric! In a way, yes! You can see the video I made on this channel labeled "Italian Project" in which we mention Dal Moro's at around 6:00 timestamp. The line translates to, "Then, we went to Dal Moro's Fresh Pasta to Go. We heard that Dal Moro had the most delicious pasta in Venice. The restaurant was small, but beautiful! We ordered spaghetti with spinach, tomatoes, and two Coca-Colas, it was very delicious!"
By the way, I'm loving the Europe series so far and I'm excited to see more videos in Japan now that you two are back at home! Cheers!

I like how anecdotal your videos are. There is a food connection between Italy and Scotland. During WW2 thousands of Italian prisoners were taken during the battles in North Africa (Libya). These POW's were sent back to England and Scotland to work on the land. Some of them stayed after the end of the war and used their Italian food skills to start a business. One of them was the making of ice cream which is why Scottish ice cream makers have Italian names.

I don't have any suggestions for Italy but if you haven't already been I would highly recommend Istanbul and in particular the "Princes Islands", (Adalar). Like Venice, they are motorised traffic free, transport is by horse and carriage with rubber wheels and even the horse's shoes are rubber to minimise the noise. The architecture is beautiful consisting of old wooden Ottoman houses many of which have been renovated. It's worth looking up either Adalar or Buyukada on TH-cam. In addition is the fantastic city of Istanbul for it's architecture, History and food.

We rarely have bidets in the UK though new bathrooms include them. I'm enjoying this series! I like how even though it is a touristy destination, you guys go off the beaten path and find the nooks and crannies like the locals. It is quite a different atmosphere over there with all the canals and no cars. On video the alleys look kind of scary at night. I wonder does it feel scary when you are there, or is it pretty safe?

Hiya. So interesting without showing the tourist sights at all, good one. But please tell me you DID visit the Murano Glass Works before leaving the city? Regarding the gelato, you're eating it too slowly! And you shouldn't be standing still. Lol. You should be walking at a pace that has you finishing one gelato just as you arrive at the next gelato shop/stand/kiosk - a distance of about 500 yards, the last time I was there. Lol. And I've definitely made a note of that wine store (thanks to you two, I think they're going to have to expand pretty soon). All the best to you.

rosé wine is a variant of red wine. It starts with red grapes, which are vinified with a few hours' contact of the skins with the must . It should be served fresh, a little less than a white wine, usually around 10 ° -12 ° C

Have you two ever seen the 70s horror film DON'T LOOK NOW? Some of it captures the hushed quality of Venice at night. The character that Donald Sutherland plays works to restore gargoyles or statues in one the old churches you commented on, I believe.

In veneto they have mostly white wine, especially sparkling like prosecco, other regions like tuscany they have red wine as chianti. And in veneto the main plate is rice or polenta and in Venetia fish and seafood, not much pasta or pizza, the real pizza is in Naples and the home made pasta is in Bologna. I' m happy you find them good, but not the best real taste, wines instead is good everywhere, every region has its typicall ones

In the Silent Disco the different colours are different songs so all the reds are one song and all the greens are another etc. You can change the colour of your headset at will. Increasingly common on cruise ships and a whole lot of fun.

I love that you guys visited some of my favourite places in the city. I used to get my wine from the wine shop you found when I lived there, and C'e Pizza was pretty much the only place I would buy pizza.
It bums me out that you went to Pasta To Go though.
To me that place represents a lot of what is wrong with tourism in Venice and around the world. The pasta there may be good, but there is nothing authentic about the place, and it helps to perpetuate tourist behaviours that have a hugely negative effect on the city and its residents, crowding and litter. The reason it is so successful is because well meaning visitors, some with a large platform such as yours, go and shine a spotlight on it. Tripadvisor reviews beget tripadvisor reviews until we find in a position where a generic take out pasta shop is the highest rated restaurant in Venice. I'm all for being able to get a quick cheap bite of food, but there are so many great affordable options that are unique to Venice to try. When the average length of a visit to Venice is so short, patronising a place like this seems like a wasted opportunity. When I used to go to my hairdresser, who was located on the same calle, it used to break my heart to see the guy who ran the osteria opposite Pasta To Go standing in his door way hoping that some people might have a change of heart.
Anyway, sorry for the diatribe. I'm glad I stuck around past your pasta experience, because I love your energy. Looking forward to watching more from you guys. Keep up the good work!

    • @kydeanderic
      @kydeanderic  5 ปีที่แล้ว

I totally understand what you are saying. What drew us there was we needed a quick bite and didn't want to drop a lot of money when we were in a hurry to just get some food in a place we knew little about. It was fast food, basically.
On the flip side, if other places in the city are having trouble competing with Pasta to Go they could try being more price competitive and not charging fees just to simply sit down (something we were told is unique to Venice in Italy), that is what limited our desire to try a lot of the more "local" places and why we ate nearly every pizza we tried outside of the restaurant.
Either way, we did try to explore both the tourist stuff and stuff a bit off the normal path as we do everywhere we visit. -E

@@kydeanderic I sympathise. It's super tough to navigate Venice if you're looking for an authentic experience rather than checking the sights off a list and getting out of there. With such a tiny number of residents, the places they go to eat and hang out are pretty hard to find. And when everything else is basically a racket designed to squeeze tourists for cash, I can't say I blame you for sticking mostly to pizza. The cost is basically the main reason that we're not living there now.
Like I said, I love that you stumbled across some of our favourite haunts; it made me really happy to see you enjoying our favourite pizza place. I've watched your other Venice videos and its clear that you did a better job than most travel channels, you guys approach things with genuine curiosity.
Anyways, I've now gotten sucked into your Japan videos. I've always wanted to visit, so i'll be be living vicariously through you from now on. Feel free to look us up if you're ever back in Italy. We'd be happy to show you around. : )

It's hard to say what places have the friendliest people or best vibe as different places can be good in different ways. When it comes to pure kindness the people of Myanmar (Burma) were amazing to us, we have a series we shot there on our channel. We also met a lot of awesome people in Italy and Croatia. People where we live in Japan are incredibly kind, but not often outgoing. We also met some solid people up in Scotland, I think there are nice people everywhere. -E

Frizzante are the first wines of the season (very young, akin to Beaujolais nouveau in France). Those would have been from local vineyards, inexpensive and a good way sell the surplus not earmarked for vintage or blending. Easy to guzzle..
