  • I love having the opportunity to work with interns. In the first segment of this video, we will work on refining the spin, and in the second segment, we'll work on the basics of cutting.
    Refining the Spin
When training a younger horse to spin, we work a lot on shoulder control exercises like reverse arc circles and side passing a square. But learning to RIDE a spin correctly in a way that helps refine it and speed it up will take a different set of exercises. We want to ride more off the seat and legs than the hands, and we want to think about shifting the horse's balance to his inside hind foot while maintaining forward motion.
    1. Riding with one hand, cue the horse to spin by moving the hand to the inside of the circle, and shifting your gaze where you want to go (this will shift your seat).
    2. Take your inside leg off and keep the outside leg where it is.
    3. If you feel the hind end shifting and moving, kiss to him and ask him to hurry up. If he doesn't hurry, use both legs.
    Tips to Remember When Cutting:
    - The cow side leg holds him straight, the herd side leg makes the turn.
    - Look where you want to go and push through with your pelvis and legs - don't lead with your shoulders.
    - Keep your hands down.
    - Maintain a straight line.
    - Don't hurry. Let the horse come through.
I hope you enjoy watching this video as much as we enjoyed filming it!
Until next time, may God bless the trails you ride,
