Most people have a smaller individual cake made so the baby can destroy it. I will be doing that so it is pretty for the pictures.

When did this become a thing, and who started it? Never heard of smashing a birthday cake when I was 1 YO, but now it's all over the place. Even 20 yrs. ago, my aunt did it to her grandchild, actually pushing the kid's hands into the cake. I asked why, and she said, "Oh, like your mother didn't do that with you?" Well, no, she didn't, and neither did anyone else I knew. That aunt was known as nutty, but her saying it implies it'd gotten around so widely that people forgot it was a recent development.
I suspect lateral xmission thru media. Like how in recent years everybody's saying "good job" as the stock phrase to praise their kids' behavior. I asked around, and someone suggested it could've been some media figure like Dr. Phil.
