Would a song By any other name Sound as sweet and true? Would all the reds be just the same Or violets - as blue? If you were gone Would words still flow And would they rhyme with you? If you were gone Would I still know How to love, and how to grow And how the vowel threads through? And so, you say, the saying goes: A rose is a rose is a rose is a rose Is a rose is a rose is a tired rhyme But in the verse there's always time Would scansion cease to mark the beats if I went away? Would a syllable interrupt the feet of tetrametric iambs when I am gone? Listen, and I will sing a tune of love, and life, and of the ocean's prose, and the poetry Of a red, red rose, that's nearly sprung in June And so, you say, the saying goes: A rose is a rose is a rose is a rose Is a rose is a rose is how I'm Keeping track of time When all the seas rise high, my dear And rocks melt with the sun Will the memory of us Still rhyme with anyone? Will we still tune our violins? Will we still sing of roses? Will we exist at all, my love Or will we fade to stanzas of our dust That, I suppose, is all we were and all we'll be? And so, the saying, so it goes: Depends a lot on if a rose Is a rose is a rose is a rose Is a rose a thing sublime And so we stay on borrowed time
I had never previously heard anything by Caroline Shaw, until 10 minutes ago hearing the string quartet "First Essay: Nimrod" on the BBC. Now I find this completely captivating music - intense strings and pure beautiful voice. I love this! Great performance.
I love this piece. I hope it will be released as a cd sometime. The same song has been recorded on cd but with a different line up, but I prefer this version. I like the lyrics, which I’m guessing, are also by Shaw.
She is in that line- Ives,Crumb but altogether unique. I would luv if pop and rock stations played this. Its really a merge of many traditions and it sounds new JudyCollins, pattismith ,kateBush married to NedRorem,Copland its all there. She doesnt make really ugly sounds which has been derigeur in serious music . I applaud her unique stretching of all the genres.
Wow! Beauty, originality, passion. In teaching my young son about music theory, we've had discussions of producing the right mix of surprise and expectation in the pop/rock world and how to avoid banality (which almost nobody does). This is an example that you don't even have to go there. Sorry if I'm not clear, but I'm a bit in an aesthetic coma right now!
Caroline Shaw is the best thing to happen to me musically in forever. She’s a gem
You are clearly an out and out philistine!
Why do you say that exactly?
same 🤟
We treasure, support and respect a talented queen.
wow wow wow, this is something all its own. I'm new to Caroline Shaw and am quickly swirling down a rabbit hole.

I adore her music. Such a gift to the contemporary music scene

I’m, justifiably, jealous. Superb.
A really, really beautiful song. Music that grounds me and brings inner peace.
WOW!
Are there no end to her talents?
IIRC, she isn't much of a basketball player :)
This is truly an inspired and incredible arrangement! Bravo!

I went through this same process when I first listened to Narrow Sea. I'm now obsessed.
Caroline Shaw makes me wish I was a string player.
Absolutely beautiful.

"Oh rose, thou art sick..."
❤️🎻🎻🎤🎻🎻❤️
woooooow, that's all I can say
Who wrote the text? Or did the miraculous Ms. Shaw write that too?
Has she released this on an album yet?
I believe it'll be on her album coming out next month!
o kodel ji viena dainuoja? ir reiktų ilgiasnių plaukiu
64k views…bruh I found Caroline from looking up feature from wolves lol she go haaard
This has something of an olde English folk song about it.
Her music has a fresh and unforced. I should like to hear more.
Came back to listen again, and realized I accidentally disliked the video. Pretty certain that the other 4 dislikes happened the exact same way!
THE BLOOD.
Ms. Shaw is the Joan of Arc of music. May more talented people follow her example and write music with traditional music values.
Really it's just a more poetic version of 'these words' by natasha bedingfield.
