An excellent episode! I loved Clare Balding's contributions, Stephen Fry yet again added a lot of interesting bonus info, and the comedy was great - Jimmy Carr and Dara Ó Briain are a safe bet.
There was an old guy in my village when I was growing up who'd trained his horse to wait for him outside the pub, so when he staggered out blind drunk, he could slump onto its back and it would walk him home and dump him in the hedge by his back door, even if he was actually asleep whilst on its back.

Not aggressive? I have had the opportunity to pet some falabella horses and I can tell you, as soon as you stick out your hand to pet them they launch at you to bite your hands off. And they kick really bad.
Regarding the 'internet hunting', legislating against it without it existing makes a lot of sense. There is no technical reason this couldn't be built, but it would be a proper arse to ensure the necessary animal welfare that hunters actually tend to care deeply about. Some guy plans to start offering it, so they ban it ahead of time. Stephen frames it as absurd, but it would be significantly harder to ban if they have to take some guy who already had a business to court, rather than just hammering it through the state assembly. And while the effort to stop him was under way, some 17 year old with a spoofed identity would have been firing a rifle at an animal from his moms basement.

i live in Canada , and we have a saying that in black bear country you carry pepper spray and wear bells , and their scat has berry's and fruit in it , in grizzly country their scat smells like pepper and has bells in it ,,, strange isnt it ? but on a serious note we have found that the insulation in Coleman coolers is what the bear truly love its like a honey wafer to them so when they rip open your car and smash all your stuff they really are after the cooler not whats in it just the insulation .

I think there has been quite a lot of preparation by some of the contestants here. So!me of the answers may have been given. When Balding said "ginger" out of the blue and hey presto! It's the correct answer. Some "guess" that was. It was a bad idea to have her on the show.
I thought she did very well. She is not a comedian but she made people laugh and knew how to pitch it. I think ginger is something she had probably heard somewhere and was there in the subconscious. I didn't know the answer until she said it when I knew she was right. And I then vaguely remembered having heard it when I worked in a stables.

black bears have been known to attack/maim/kill humans, a hunter was killed and eaten a few years ago by a black bear, can't remember if it was in spring when they leave hibernation and feel a bit hungry or in the fall, maybe it wanted a late season meal?
the bit about Indians belies the fact that there were desperate tribes ranging from the peaceful hippy type to the warmongering to the buffalo genocidal types... it truly was diverse to the point where you need to specify which tribe when and when.

I know this is super old, but at 22:40 Stephen talks about smallpox blankets being distributed to indians, and IF this happened, it happened on an extremely limited basis, as in, there is like one example of someone talking about in in a letter and it may or may not have actually even happened then iirc.
It is a reality. It was commonly used in North America, especially in Canada when the French and British enlisted Native Americans to fight. Biological warfare is nothing new. It was also used by the Roman and Byzantium empires to expedite siege situations and normally used Smallpox ,although Anthrax and Typhus were very effective also. That top lip trick works on wildebeest too, I've seen clips where wild dogs will grab the top lip and the wildebeest just freezes and that makes it easy for the other dogs to come and kill it... not sure when such a response could ever be a benefit in nature.
It sounds like there are a couple of audio cuts in that part, so it's anyone's guess what Stephen _actually_ said (or what he _meant_ to say, which is often not the same). My best guess is that he either meant to say that real horses have a sustained output around 494 watts (approximately 2/3rds of 1hp) or that one hp is defined as 735 ~ 746 watts (it varies between different industries).

Canadian here; with all bears, except Polar, you are best to stand your ground and assume a body posture to present the largest visual profile to the bear. Scream, thrash branches against the ground....it's not about scaring the bear off, more about confounding them. Bears are rather intelligent. When met with your erratic behaviour they become flummoxed, and flee. If met with a grizzly you might be better off climbing a tree. Polar bears are the largest living land carnivores; with adult males topping 700 kg, they're not to be trifled with. In fact, Churchill, Manitoba residents leave their parked cars unlocked so anyone under threat of a Polar bear attack has a safe space to retreat to.

The idea that something is made to be illegal before it has happened isn't that crazy. Say someone in another country came up with a loophole allowing them to kill someone; would we really wait for it to happen to us before we made it against the law? Now I'm interested to know when this episode was in comparison to the Countdown episode where Rachel talks about Susie not being able to get out about fingering a horse.
Misrepresentation of the hunting technique. Plains Indians preserved and dried the meat. The hides were used for clothing, dwellings and other things. The bones were used as tools/utensiles and such. And the number of beasts roaming the plains were a result of land management. The indians expanded the plains but felling trees and burning the terrain which allowed the grasses and even flowers to grow in place of the trees. The trees block out the necessary sunlight for certain plants to grow. This type of forest-grassland management is still used in places like Japan.

3 stallion could not have possibly been the founders of the breed. i suspect there were mares of various breeds involved until there were enough thoroughbred mares to be bred by t'bred stallions.

Run downhill from black bears because their claws are curved and they can't do it quickly. Climb a tree with a grizzly because their claws are straight and they can't climb. If you're ever in the States, it really wouldn't take much of a refresher to know which to do because they live on opposite sides of the country.
Grizzlies can climb trees. Both species of bears have curved claws, with the brown bears being much larger. Grizzlies can outrun a horse in a sprint both up and downhill. Black bears can be found in Grizzly country. Lower 48 black bears seldom attack people but Alaskan black bears are very aggressive toward people and do kill. If you are in bear country, make noise, carry bear spray and it's smart to be armed with something large enough to stop a bear if needed. No need to remember which way to run because running just gets you attacked.
Hilarious to hear Brits talking about running away from a bear. Running triggers predator response. Bears are much faster than people. Black bears stalk with fixed gaze: fight for your life. Grizzly bears will challenge charge: staying still avoids triggering predatory attack. Lack of experience, lack of video research. But this was recorded years ago.

I think a slanted view of other countries (or even people's own) history is by no means only a British phenomenon. History is as they say written by the victors and it is common for countries to exaggerate their own victories and play down (even ignore) their defeats or what nowadays would be seen as unpopular/unethical acts..
sorry I have to nitpick here and I know it's 5 years on but there is no such thing as a white horse. They are either grey or albino which is a complete lack of pigment in either a person or animal,

I think there has been quite a lot of preparation by some of the contestants here. So!me of the answers may have been given. When Balding said "ginger" out of the blue and hey presto! It's the correct answer. Some "guess" that was. It was a bad idea to have her on the show.
I thought she did very well. She is not a comedian but she made people laugh and knew how to pitch it. I think ginger is something she had probably heard somewhere and was there in the subconscious. I didn't know the answer until she said it when I knew she was right. And I then vaguely remembered having heard it when I worked in a stables.
“Gingering up” horses is a well-known practice. It’s not at all surprising that someone who grew up with horses would have heard of it. But the fact that she knew something that you didn’t is threatening enough to you that she doesn’t deserve to be on the show? Kind of pathetic.

black bears have been known to attack/maim/kill humans, a hunter was killed and eaten a few years ago by a black bear, can't remember if it was in spring when they leave hibernation and feel a bit hungry or in the fall, maybe it wanted a late season meal?

@@Furnus105 My knowledge is a bit rusty but I do know that while they did fight among themselves the only known occurrences of tribal extermination was over the fur trade in the 1600's when it became increasingly obvious that the ones that held the fur trade would hold more power with their respective dutch or french allies.
I know this is super old, but at 22:40 Stephen talks about smallpox blankets being distributed to indians, and IF this happened, it happened on an extremely limited basis, as in, there is like one example of someone talking about in in a letter and it may or may not have actually even happened then iirc.
It is a reality. It was commonly used in North America, especially in Canada when the French and British enlisted Native Americans to fight. Biological warfare is nothing new. It was also used by the Roman and Byzantium empires to expedite siege situations and normally used Smallpox ,although Anthrax and Typhus were very effective also. Infected cloth was the usual vector of infection.

That top lip trick works on wildebeest too, I've seen clips where wild dogs will grab the top lip and the wildebeest just freezes and that makes it easy for the other dogs to come and kill it... not sure when such a response could ever be a benefit in nature.

It sounds like there are a couple of audio cuts in that part, so it's anyone's guess what Stephen _actually_ said (or what he _meant_ to say, which is often not the same).
My best guess is that he either meant to say that real horses have a sustained output around 494 watts (approximately 2/3rds of 1hp) or that one hp is defined as 735 ~ 746 watts (it varies between different industries).

Canadian here; with all bears, except Polar, you are best to stand your ground and assume a body posture to present the largest visual profile to the bear. Scream, thrash branches against the ground....it's not about scaring the bear off, more about confounding them. Bears are rather intelligent. When met with your erratic behaviour they become flummoxed, and flee.
If met with a grizzly you might be better off climbing a tree.
Polar bears are the largest living land carnivores; with adult males topping 700 kg, they're not to be trifled with.
In fact, Churchill, Manitoba residents leave their parked cars unlocked so anyone under threat of a Polar bear attack has a safe space to retreat to.

Misrepresentation of the hunting technique. Plains Indians preserved and dried the meat. The hides were used for clothing, dwellings and other things. The bones were used as tools/utensiles and such. And the number of beasts roaming the plains were a result of land management. The indians expanded the plains but felling trees and burning the terrain which allowed the grasses and even flowers to grow in place of the trees. The trees block out the necessary sunlight for certain plants to grow. This type of forest-grassland management is still used in places like Japan.

Run downhill from black bears because their claws are curved and they can't do it quickly. Climb a tree with a grizzly because their claws are straight and they can't climb. If you're ever in the States, it really wouldn't take much of a refresher to know which to do because they live on opposite sides of the country.
Grizzlies can climb trees. Both species of bears have curved claws, with the brown bears being much larger. Grizzlies can outrun a horse in a sprint both up and downhill. Black bears can be found in Grizzly country. Lower 48 black bears seldom attack people but Alaskan black bears are very aggressive toward people and do kill. If you are in bear country, make noise, carry bear spray and it's smart to be armed with something large enough to stop a bear if needed. No need to remember which way to run because running just gets you attacked.

Hilarious to hear Brits talking about running away from a bear. Running triggers predator response. Bears are much faster than people. Black bears stalk with fixed gaze: fight for your life. Grizzly bears will challenge charge: staying still avoids triggering predatory attack.

I think a slanted view of other countries (or even people's own) history is by no means only a British phenomenon. History is as they say written by the victors and it is common for countries to exaggerate their own victories and play down (even ignore) their defeats or what nowadays would be seen as unpopular/unethical acts..

sorry I have to nitpick here and I know it's 5 years on but there is no such thing as a white horse. They are either grey or albino which is a complete lack of pigment in either a person or animal,
I thought for many years that this was true but apparently white (not albino) horses do exist but are very rare.

You forgot that they moved as Predators...8...and many other predatory and carrion species would migrate on the same route.....there wasnt a great heap of wastefull kill....there was gluttony for many species......intentional or not.

Your information on the buffalo jump is fictional. Every part of the animal was harvested. It was the settlers who killed the buffalo, not the indigenous people.
They didn't explain _why_ "Western" shows are no longer as dominant. They were crushed almost entirely by _one movie._ Blazing Saddles lampooned the ridiculousness (and casual racism) of old Westerns so successfully that they all died within a couple years.
