Good trip. Those holes in the snow you found on your walk around the lake are overnight ruffed grouse roosts/beds. They bury themselves in soft snow for its insulating properties. They usually defecate before leaving their beds. That's what you found. The impressions in the snow near the holes are made by their wings at take off.
That's good to know. I was assuming an owl doing some hunting. I've never seen a grouse, as we don't have them this far south, but I hope to see grouse some day while exploring more northern climes.

Dude! I just wanted to thank you for the opportunity to watch your amazing adventures in the North. I was heavily affected by your work as soon as I discovered your channel around 4 years ago. I was in a very difficult place in my life at the time. I think the most difficult in my life. Watching you exploring the wilderness in the way you do is inspiring. You approach it with such humility, and respect while showing good humour and positivity in the face of the nastiest bugs, weather, and portages the North has to offer. It gave me hope in a hopeless time in my life. It got me out there; into the wilderness again! Following in your footsteps sometimes. Sometimes finding my own way. Thank you Jon. Thank you so much. Now I am starting to post my own videos. Learning along the way. Loving it!! I still watch everything you post. I love watching you and Erin too. You're a great pair!! Thanks again! Cheers!

@@LostLakes The whole process is amazing. Not just the beautiful stuff but the really difficult stuff too. I find a little suffering as a part of the trip is therapeutic somehow. Awesome!🙏🍀
The still image at 6:42 is so beautiful, homey and calm. Speaking of what smells more appetising than cooking onions, id say garlic frying is a close second. Your video is a combination of some of the most pleasing things, like staying warm and cosy indoors while watching out a window where outside is raining or snowing, the cracking of wood in a campfire, the sound of hot water pouring into cocoa powder… it feels so reassuring. It’s very kind and considerate of u to handle the fish captured so gently l, and ensure it stayed in the water instead of lifting it up. ❤
I love the sound that walking on snow at -25° or so makes. Just as a cup of hot cocoa listening to the wind is more soothing to sleep in than anything else I know of.
As a fellow winter camping enthusiast bring a couple foam tiles with you next time to put under your stove. It will reduce the amount of ice that melts and pools that you have to scoop away
Tenting in minus 40 Celsius, on a lake! You are an animal! The nighttime view with the chimney shooting out a vertical plume of smoke with the constellation Orion in the background was beautiful. And nothing beats the crunching sound of snow under your feet at - 40.

Beautiful winter wonderland ! Camping on ice with a wood stove , wow I never would have imagined that possible. Fishing from inside the tent how convenient . Loved the video.
I've never winter camped and at this stage don't have this desire. But, I love living vicariously through you Jon. Just being that exposed and close to death conditions is inspiring. You need plenty of trust in your gear and ability to do this sort of thing. It's crazy to think of how the native Americans, Innuits and other northern peoples survived this stuff.
Many Europeans lived through same conditions as well. It's not close to death, not closer than usual really. We forgot how close to it we are all the time. Living like this is about connection to nature. Life in conditions like this is very good for humans, as it drives progress immensely and promotes friendly, cooperative living.

About 10 years ago I had the pleasure to visit Canada and spend 7 days in Algonquin Park. Your videos take me back to this time. Unfortunately you cant really compare the nature in central Europe to the nature you have in Canada. Thanks for posting those amazing and inspirational videos Jon!
Thanks for answering all those questions. Always wonder about powering my lights and radio. My first winter camp was a learning experience. I now sleep with my hearing aids, phone and solar radio. Hey Jon, another great video my friend, it's nice that you had some fish action in the tent. Those holes you saw in the snow are most likely from Grouse that come off their roost and burrow under the snow in real cold weather. The temps you had would do it for sure. I have seen this many times over the years. I even had them bust out of the snow when I walked past them, that will get the heart started . lol Another great video, take care and stay safe Brother. Hi Erin
Yep, grouse taking cover from cold. You can see the trace of the wings as it comes out of its hole . Saw a few coming out out of the snow in cold morning , gives you a fast beating heart for a second 😁
The holes in the snow are where grouse stayed under the snow to escape the cold. The wing prints are where they flew away. We call them partridge where I live.
I never liked the idea of the hot tent on the ice but the easy water and lazy fishing looked fun. You had some hefty multitasking going on with the filming, reading, sonar checking, and fishing. Looked like an amazing time.
John I wanted to thank you [and that pretender Xander, yes, you are like a dad to him] for your videos. I share your joy of nature, be it a greT moose or bear or a tiny flower, insect or interesting fungi. You do a great job of sharing your experience in a thoughtful, inclusive way. You also set a great example for others to follow of how we should 'take only memories and leave behind only footprints'. Keep them coming please.
@@LostLakes I know, though we did guffaw when you and Erin put 'Xander' in the woods. The camaraderie between you is great to see. I am fortunate to share a similar relationship with a couple of long time camping buddies. It is precious to me...
Very beautiful, the snow, the open landscape the forest and particulary the night shots. I really like the little window you put in the tent, I will try to do that in my Tentipi tent.
Wow!-40! We can relate here in Sask. Sleeping in the bush is definitely a plus for sure! -40, sunny and no wind, is very special indeed. Always enjoy your ice fishing as well. Also your drone shots of the area are really appreciated and so beautiful. Thanks so much!
As I’m sat in my garden in the uk at 3am watching your video in 0 degree Celsius cold your video suddenly makes me feel like it’s summer over here with your -40 chills! Another great video to help me sleep. Thanks again :)
Hi Jon. Lots to appreciate about your videos and reflections. One thing that stands out for me from this and other posts is the way you share drone footage and pair it with subtle audio. It highlights your videography skills and has an emotive quality that elevates a sense of appreciation for nature. It also makes me want to go on similar adventures! The snow situation in Manitoba as of Dec 31, 2023 is well below average. Hoping for more soon to get the xc skiing season started and maybe head out on a winter camping adventure or two:) Good health to you, Erin and family this winter and in 2024.

This was just stunning, I feel like it's been one of your best yet. The cinematography was so beautiful and serene, the wind blowing through the trees, the long exposure shots, the view of the snow falling from within the tent, the drone shots, ... Just amazing! Thank you for bringing us along for this fantastic trip.
I can’t imagine the confidence and skill level needed to do what you and many others like you do . I’m in awe. Thank you for sharing your experience and videos.
Thanks Rebecca :) Shortly after this trip I tore my meniscus on another trip and I hate to think what would happen if I had been solo in extreme temps...
@@LostLakes I thought about that after I saw your video and how Erin was able to physically get you to the hospital. You both are amazing and I’m so glad you received the medical care you needed! Erin’s a keeper 👍
Thanks Bryce! The inside temp ranges widely depending on how I use the dampers (on the door and flue) but it's doable to get it to 40C when it's -30C outside. But if it's -30 overnight and I'm trying to maximize the burn duration, I'll close the dampers most of the way to slow the burn. It's also much colder on the ground than in the top half of the tent, so it could easily be below freezing still in that scenario which is why I still need a good sleep system (I only run the stove all night at -20C or colder). Generally if I'm awake the indoor temp is probably 10-12C and if sleeping a bit below freezing
Man that shot at 24:15 is so cool! The faint trace of the feathers from the wings in the snow is something I've never seen before. That's why you go outside and explore, because you get to see the small but amazing details of nature that most people never get to see
Thanks Jon, great video! You hit two of my favorite things of winter… the sound of snow when it’s -30 or more, and the fantastic stars included the Milky Way! The drone footage was excellent also!
Man this would be really fun to try. Obviously not so extreme starting out but the idea of solo camping in some wilderness would be a lot of fun to learn
13:42 That tube seems to be the one from Matzuo available only at Canadian tire (it's a special custom order). The dark green one is AMAZING for Bass fishing. If you don't catch bass with it, there ain't bass in that lake :) The white one is great for Lake Trout.
Grouse sleep under the snow because it's a good insulator. In the morning they fly off leaving a hole in the snow, with poop at the bottom. You may have noticed the tracks and marks, where the wings hit the snow.
I've been winter camping with the Boy Scouts in 1974. We had a low temperature of -45° C. And that's without the windchills. Putting on the boots in the morning is the worst part.
As an Australian who has only once been subjected to -30c in Ottawa, more power to you. -40c is nuts. At the same time, the idea of being in a hot tent with that wind blowing and snow hammering down outside is enticing.
So happy to have found your excellent channel!!! It still amazes me how easy you make it look!! Even though it’s ALOT of work! For some reason I find it calming to at h you and Erin chopping wood. Funny how you mentioned the temps matching! I had to google it right before you mentioned it!! Absolutely love your channel! You are excellent at this!!!
It is always a big impression to see the footage The silence and peace created by the landscapes and the snow just make me feel small in this world I just wish to see these places one day myself

Is it possible for the stove to melt through the ice? Maybe if you were there for an extended amount of time? I really enjoy most of your content, you're very calculated and prepared while also appreciating the beauty of your surroundings.
I don't think so...the water it melts acts as a buffer for the heat and then it can't melt the ice. But I had some splits under and through the legs to help it float and stay level. Thanks Aaron :)

I have seen this many times over the years. I even had them bust out of the snow when I walked past them, that will get the heart started . lol Another great video, take care and stay safe Brother. Hi Erin
That's what I told my wife, I've seen this while Deer hunting.
Yep, grouse taking cover from cold. You can see the trace of the wings as it comes out of its hole . Saw a few coming out out of the snow in cold morning , gives you a fast beating heart for a second 😁
Super cool! Thanks Dunk!
Loved the fishing inside. Great video. That still night shot with the stars was so clear and clean it almost looked photoshopped.
Hahah glad to hear that! Thanks Jason :)
The holes in the snow are where grouse stayed under the snow to escape the cold. The wing prints are where they flew away. We call them partridge where I live.
Really cool!
Answering the call of nature while camped on ice…enjoy the walk!
Lol yep another reason why I prefer the woods! Even for pee I went back there
Oh dang Jon!!! This was so fun to watch all snuggled up at home. Loved the shots of the tent at night on the water with starry background.
Thank you!!
Much appreciated John! Xander's a beauty though my friend 😉
@@LostLakes I know, though we did guffaw when you and Erin put 'Xander' in the woods. The camaraderie between you is great to see. I am fortunate to share a similar relationship with a couple of long time camping buddies. It is precious to me...
@@johnisherwood4030 💚
As always Jon, stunning scenery and love your tent setup. No frills just a useable space, nice and simple is perfect
Love the outdoors in winter!! Spent today on the ice fishing with a friend !! I can relate.!!
Great trip. Solid fishing and real convenient having water in the tent. Looking forward to next trip.
Add a little wind and suddenly it's just scary lol. Thank so much Ken!
I don't understand why you don't have a million subscribers. Your videos are always interesting, fun, informative, and in such beautiful places.
💚💚💚
True.
Another great vid, when i read the title, I thought -40 f or c, and little did i know the answer to that is "yes"!
😆😆
As I’m sat in my garden in the uk at 3am watching your video in 0 degree Celsius cold your video suddenly makes me feel like it’s summer over here with your -40 chills! Another great video to help me sleep. Thanks again :)
Hahah thank you!
Hoping for more soon to get the xc skiing season started and maybe head out on a winter camping adventure or two:)
Good health to you, Erin and family this winter and in 2024.
Greatly appreciate that! I'm about to start a trip here...barely any snow but I'm hoping I can at least travel over lakes. Happy new year!
That was another beautiful video, the scenery was amazing and it was fascinating watching you camping on the ice! It’s funny how the urge to knock off icicles never leaves us! All the best from Scotland, UK
Hahah who could resist...
lol you did a hole in the heated home. I love that you did more than one day. TY for shearing.
Just finished your absolutely stunning Lake Nipigon vid - and as it finished, saw you'd posted a new one. Guess I'm watching another! Thanks for all the amazing content.
That Nipigon video is just so good, isn’t it? Among Jon’s best. I’ve watched it many times, always see something new.
Appreciate that so much! 💚💚
Hi dear, your every video is very empressive, its awesome to watch your all videos, and mostly i watch your video's when I feel low, you are just a great human being 👍👍👍
Thank you! 💚💚
Thank you so much Edsko!
You are my best subscription since my arrivial on TH-cam. Thats saying alot. Thank You. Birmingham,Al
Incredibly kind of you 💚 Thank you so much!
Damn, that's crazy cold! Glad you're safe. Thank you for another great video. I especially loved the starscapes. So beautiful!
Thanks Andrea! :)
Just great videos as always. Thanks for always being a form of relaxation in my life.
Also, what does the temperature stay at inside the tent in those temps?
Great video as always. I love the “will it start?” moments, and the triumphant fireworks exploding RAV4 logo on the dash.
😆
Thanks for taking us along for the ride..... Beautiful 👍🏼
Thanks for joining me :)
That Lit up tent against the night sky was absolutely beautiful! Looks like a great place to find some peace!
Man that shot at 24:15 is so cool! The faint trace of the feathers from the wings in the snow is something I've never seen before. That's why you go outside and explore, because you get to see the small but amazing details of nature that most people never get to see
Love your videos, man. You’re calm, prepared, your cinematography is amazing and these just make me happy.
Cheers, brother!
It's always exciting when I see you put up a new video! Thank you for sharing your experience.
💚💚
Thanks Jon, great video! You hit two of my favorite things of winter… the sound of snow when it’s -30 or more, and the fantastic stars included the Milky Way! The drone footage was excellent also!
Thanks so much Nicholas!
Man, even Zander would be jealous of those night shots on the first night. Very nice.
WOW WAS WAITING FOR ONE OF THESE VIDEOS WHILE IM COMFY ON MY SOFA! BUT,WOULD DEFINATELY SWITCH UP IN A HEART BEAT...HAPPY TENTING.👌
That was some gorgeous winter weather, despite the -40 C temps. I’m always impressed with your work ethic and dedication to nature.
Thanks as always Derek!
Watch your videos over several times, still wonderful to watch them! Thanks John!
Man this would be really fun to try. Obviously not so extreme starting out but the idea of solo camping in some wilderness would be a lot of fun to learn
What an adventure! Truly frigid work you do. I always enjoy your content.thank you!
Thanks so much Scott!
Man this was relaxing. I just had a really shitty couple days and I needed this. 🙏
💚💚
13:42 That tube seems to be the one from Matzuo available only at Canadian tire (it's a special custom order). The dark green one is AMAZING for Bass fishing. If you don't catch bass with it, there ain't bass in that lake :) The white one is great for Lake Trout.
Wonderful video, as always! I’d love to be out in a snowstorm like that. Thanks for taking us along!
Thanks for joining me Lawrence!
Nature is indeed soothing and presented wonderfully here!
Thank you!
Grouse sleep under the snow because it's a good insulator. In the morning they fly off leaving a hole in the snow, with poop at the bottom. You may have noticed the tracks and marks, where the wings hit the snow.
Really cool!
I did not know that about grouse, very interesting thank you
Thanks for the info about grouse, interesting
I've been winter camping with the Boy Scouts in 1974. We had a low temperature of -45° C. And that's without the windchills. Putting on the boots in the morning is the worst part.
That was AWESOME , cool folding saw . love the video and the still shots. The stars and the glowing tent at night were so cool. Thanks for sharing !!
Thanks a lot Dennis!
Love everthing about your videos. Thank you for sharing your adventures with us!
Thank you!
Breath taking in every way! Thanks for bringing us along 🤗
Thank you!
Man these videos are relaxing for when i wanna wind down for bed. Could sleep to a playlist of em (not calling em boring, just relaxing)
As an Australian who has only once been subjected to -30c in Ottawa, more power to you. -40c is nuts.
At the same time, the idea of being in a hot tent with that wind blowing and snow hammering down outside is enticing.
Hahah it's pretty dang cosy!
I really enjoy your storytelling and wonderful photography! Thanks for taking us along!
Thanks a lot Nealie!
Thank you so much Brenda!!! 💚
It’s been 11 days Jon!! I’m having Jon and Erin withdrawals!! Lol stay safe!
It's so nice watching this from my warm room.
It is always a big impression to see the footage
The silence and peace created by the landscapes and the snow just make me feel small in this world
I just wish to see these places one day myself
💚💚
Had to pause the video at 6:40 to type this, subscribed and thumbs up. Absolutely amazing shot and the reason I watch these hot tent videos. Beautiful, thank you for sharing!
Thank you!
Enjoyed your 4 day camping trip. Especially your explanations on every aspect of your trip.
Finally someone brings the battery powered saw! About time. Nice video!
Sure was a nice head start :) Thanks Tom!
I really appreciate the hard work and conditions you endure to make these great videos John... living vicariously through you lol...Donald watching from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia
Thanks Donald! Love Cape Breton...been about 15 years now but it was gorgeous
Here's an idea - A Lost Lakes Campfire Cookbook for others to use on their trips. All of the food yall make looks delicious! Another great video...stay safe, be blessed.
Thanks for sharing your adventures with us, they're informative and so interesting!
Thanks for joining me!
Always calming and a lot of comfort watching your videos. Ty Jon
Thanks as always Jessica!
@@LostLakes you're very welcome
Hi Jon, such beautiful scenery, i agree that camping in the woods is best, well done and enjoyed..
Thanks Jim!
Someone probably already commented about the holes in the snow but that is where partridge sleep. I'm 100% on this one .
Thanks SB! Super cool!
Great video as always Jon! The comfort of fishing from your living room looks pretty awesome- and capturing such a gorgeous winter storm from “indoors” makes me want to try it…. Almost! 😂
Hahah thanks Billie!!
I enjoyed this trip so much Jim! Thanks for taking us a long. I can't wait for the next adventure!
I love the sound very cold snow makes when walked on. We had a couple of nights at -25C in an otherwise mild winter and I could barely stand going out to the porch to get an armload of firewood. Oh to be young, strong and energetic again!
Gosh you are an amazing man to venture out in this extreme cold
Thank you John for your videos. As a nature lover in a city who is unable to get to nature your videos have helped me so much . Thank you ❤
I feel your pain! Thanks a lot Lisa 💚
@@LostLakes My husband and I have watched every video you have made . Your filmography, if that is correct , is outstanding. Please keep doing what you are doing. 🪵🌿
@@lisapayne7498 I truly appreciate that!
Have screen will watch! Love the beautiful landscape, atmospheric shots.
Everyone needs to do what you did if they get the chance. It'll make a person very thankful for the comforts of home.
