The World Cup started in 1991 initially with the US/Canada/England. South Africa came into the fold in 1999 or 2000. Alot of work by a few South African guys in the mid 90s who went all around England and America to find the best pigeons possible. Men like Kenny Tommy, Johnny Conradie, Edgar Roscoe and a few others

The World Cup started with USA, Canada and they incorporated the UK and Ireland to call it the World Cup. I think by 1994 SA and a few other countries were in. I could be wrong but this is what I am thinking. Many have crossed different strains (families) all the time looking to create their own family with a unique combination of genetics. We look for specific traits to match up to each other. Long distance Rollers and competition Rollers have different standards and the long rollers might do well in the 11 bird fly, but from what I recall they are still judging turns in the 11 bird fly in SA and not individual pigeons. the UK only has 20 bird flies but they have young, yearling and old bird contests.
The 11 bird fly was a popular fly in the USA in the southern states going back to the 80's and when the World Cup had the 20 bird fly going the NBRC in the USA decided to make the 11 bird fly a National event as well and this would not conflict with the WC fly times. Later the NBRC started their own 20 bird National contest and now still do both. The 11 bird fly tends to get more flyers each season. The 11 bird kit tends to be an easier contest because judge individual birds rolling and the 20 bird contests are more difficult to cultivate to and score well in. With many US fanciers selecting for individual qualities going back to Bill Pensom days this mind set I think shaped the hobby and the biases also were set. They believed that competition Rollers were just tumblers and many still believe this today and it's no longer true of this. I think the fanciers in the UK and SA have shown the world that you can have high quality performance and good breaking ability. The problem I have seen is that it is harder to make a high quality individual performer into a big breaking competition pigeon and this is what keeps many US flyers from creating these great kits seen in the WC. These days many are importing pigeons from the places that are doing better in the 20 birds WC fly so they can maybe speed up the process to obtaining better kit performing kits.
