Growing up in Brooklyn, NYC. And coming from Dominican parents this is the music that hit me to my very core! I would read and see reports about East L.A. and chicano,s and it was always negative, but over the years I've seen that we have the same interest, culture, and the love of la familia and la raza as we do on the east coast! The car's you guys ride around and the music you guys love always made me envious! I would love to come out there to visit because i just know i would be treated like familia! Hi Richard from El Monte. We moved to El monte from Lincoln Heights when I was nine (9) years old. I was in the last few months of the fifth grade. My last year of grammar school was pretty bad. I wore white oxford shoes ( we had to shine them every night during the school week!😝) What made it even worse was my father made us wear white socks! (It was required by Dad's law!) When I entered Jr. High, I was teased so badly! Anyway, my mother came from a very large family (12, 8 brothers and 3 sisters) where music was a constant. So, that's what made me the"cool" kid to high school. Every Friday after lunch we were allowed to bring our 45's and play them. The 33's and 78's were too valuable to be borrowed. I learned at a very young age to care for those vinyls and I made it a habit to change the subject when my friends were about to ask. Anyway, my collection was whatever I could con out of my uncles! At least three were nice enough, but that came with the 15 mimute lecture and advice on "taking care of Uncle's records which came with a scary warnimg! I almost wrote a book, but my writing is therapy that I cherish so you 'll have to trust me. Back to Oldies, which included "Doo wop", "Blues and Jazz", "Little Richard", "Roy Orbeson", "Ray Charles", Patsy Cline", "Johnny Cash", "Sam Cooke", "Fats Domino", "Dean Martin", on and on..... later on it was R& B, Motown (Marvin Gaye, early years and Tammy Terrell), etc. I know this is alot, but once I became a teen-ager in High school, the music exploded into the most phenomenal music era in History! I'm talking about the 60's! Need I say Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, the Doors, the Beach Boys, Cream, Creedance Clearwater, Chambers Brothers, Blood, Sweat, and Tears, Sly and the Family Stone ( Sly Stone was the first to use the "N" word in his music, but has never been credited fo it). Need I go on? All my Oldies came purely, and fondly from my Chicano, 2nd Generation, Family! My Father's roots were "produce, farm workers.
