As a long time fan of this group, I’m glad more people are discovering their music through TikTok. They’re a really good band. They definitely deserve the attention. They were on hiatus for a bit and came off of it to release this song. Which they were hesitant to do.

"I'll be back when you least expect it, and hell's coming with me." Sounds like a statement a hero wouldn't make, but keep a pin in that red herring.
Not long after he goes on about a house on a hill, with a secret kept like a slave. I don't have to go in long about how there's no way that that's a good secret right?
What cements this is the line, "You've got a black magic preacher." This is also one of the best arguments for this being theological because, well, it's in the lyrics. Other than that it blatantly lays out that the secret is something about the man in the building.
One other line that help the theological argument is, "You line your pockets with money you steal from the poor." Alone it could simply mean a scam artist, but keep it in mind. After which he says another line in reference to the devil, "I'd pay the devil twice as much to keep your soul." Definitely doesn't sound like anything a good person would normally say; but, keep it in mind.
After he just sings about the drifter coming back, and hanging the preacher. I'll talk about the fire and smoke after, but let's focus on the revenge and his statements. He clearly brings ruin to the source of his woes, but goes no further, though he takes the opportunity to strike fear into the hearts of any conspirators.
So, at least what I see it as is this church did him wrong somehow, either specifically the preacher or maybe multiple. That's not clear. It's made obvious that the individual is an actual preacher by how he's referred as that word specifically rather than multiple similar words, and the black magic line is one often used to denote false prophets in Catholicism and Christianity.
Other comments about the preacher let us know he's guiding everyone into ruin by the singer noting how he's leading them to their grave. So we have a black magic preacher in a house on a hill, sounds like a church to me right? Even talks about him stealing money from the poor, which corrupt churches are literally famous for other than actions against children.
All the devil lines are also common phrases amongst god-fearing people especially avid church members. Clearly the town was told about his plight, thought him a liar or knew and cared none; This, created a "demon" that came back later either a drifting gunman or what I'd like to think, a lawman. He came back and raised "fire and smoke" which could be him literally burning the building down or raising up a ruckus by notifying the land owners and coming back and hanging the peacher for his crimes, then looking to the rest of the populace and saying, "I am the righteous hand of God, I am the devil you forgot." Which could easily be, "I am the law, the consequence for your crimes."

You make really good points. I suspected that the church had wronged the hero and many others and that was the hero's motivation behind their actions. I didn’t realize they only got their revenge against the specific person/people who wronged them and left it at that. I definitely agree that them saying they're the "righteous hand of God" means they're the enforcer of law and justice.
And yes, there are sooooo many religious/biblical references, which is actually what my analysis focused on.

First time I heard this song, I immediately vibed with the instruments, the melody, and the structure of the song. Second time though I noticed there were several biblical/Christian references made. I appreciate this song even more now because of it.
Here's some references I caught:
- "There is a town at the bottom of that hill": as opposed to the "city set on a hill" that Jesus mentioned in his Sermon on the Mount (Matt. 5:14, to be precise).
- "You'll be heading up that hill to the grave": probably a reference to how Jesus was crucified on a hill (Idk if it's Calvary Hill or Golgotha, I don't remember).
- "And it is well with my soul": interesting that the protagonist says this. Anyone who knows modern Christian songs will likely recognize this line from the song "It Is Well". There is also a hymn called "It Is Well With My Soul", which may actually be the song referenced, but I have not listened to it, so idk. Either way, the line refers to being in God's favor.
- Since the town is at the bottom of a hill which is at the bottom of a valley, I wouldn't be shocked if this is an allusion to the Valley of the Shadow of Death (Psalm 23:4).
- "And I told you one day you will see that I'll be back, I guarantee": spoken right after the most infamous line of the entire song (the "righteous hand of God"/"devil you forgot" one). Possible reference to the Second Coming of Jesus (Luke 12:40) as well as Satan's return after Jesus's 1000 year reign (Rev. 20:7-8).
So the protagonist, who seems to assert that they are on the good side (maybe even that God is on their side), brings justice and chaos to an evil religious town. I guess in a sense good overcame evil, just in an unexpected way. :)

Well if your looking for more like this I'd just suggest listening to more poor man's poison if you haven't already, songs like "feed the machine" and "give and take" are really good, there's also more quiet songs (even though they are a bit sadder) like "good people" and "he wasnt much for the whiskey" those are some of my recommendations if you havent listened already
As the other reply said, you should check out the rest of Poor Mans Poison’s stuff; they’re a fantastic band. You might like some of the Dead South’s stuff too (maybe Gunslinger’s Glory?) although their stuff tends to be kind of hit-or-miss for me. Maybe something from one of Rusty Cage’s legit albums (not the singles/internet albums) although that might be a bit of a stretch. I hope you find something that you like :)
