    Lyrics:
    Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo-doo-doo
    Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo-doo-doo
    Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo-doo-doo
    Doo-doo-doo
    I'm packed and I'm holding, I'm smiling
She's living, she's golden, she lives for me
    Says she lives for me
    Ovation, her own motivation
She comes 'round and she goes down on me
And I make her smile like a drug for you
Do ever what you want to do, coming over you
Keep on smiling what we go through
One-stop to the rhythm that divides you
And I speak to you like the chorus to the verse
Chop another line like a coda with a curse
Come on like a freak show, takes the stage
We give them the games we play, she say
    I want something else
    To get me through this
Semi-charmed kind of life, baby, baby
    I want something else
I'm not listening when you say
    Goodbye
    Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo-doo-doo
    Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo-doo-doo
    Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo-doo-doo
    Doo-doo-doo
The sky was gold, it was rose
I was taking sips up into my nose
And I wish I could get back there, someplace back there
Smiling in the pictures you would take
Doing crystal meth will lift you up until you break
It won't stop, I won't come down, I keep stock
With a tick-tock rhythm, a bump for the drop
And then I bumped up, I took the hit that I was given
Then I bumped again, then I bumped again, I said
How do I get back there
To the place where I fell asleep inside you?
How do I get myself back to
    The place where you said
    I want something else
    To get me through this
Semi-charmed kind of life, baby, baby
    I want something else
I'm not listening when you say
    Goodbye
I believe in the sand beneath my toes
The beach gives a feeling, an earthy feeling
I believe in the faith that grows
And the four right chords can make me cry
When I'm with you I feel like I could die
And that would be alright, alright
And when the plane came in, she said she was crashing
The velvet it rips in the city
We tripped on the urge to feel alive
But now I'm struggling to survive
Those days you were wearing that velvet dress
You're the priestess, I must confess
Those little red panties, they pass the test
So slide up 'round the belly face down on the mattress
    And I want something else
To get me through this life, baby
    I want something else
    Not listening when you say
    Goodbye, goodbye
    Goodbye, goodbye
    Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo-doo-doo
    Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo-doo-doo
    Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo-doo-doo
The sky was gold, it was rose
I was taking sips up into my nose
And I wish I could get back there, someplace back there
In the place, we used to start our lives
    Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo-doo-doo
    Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo-doo-doo
    Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo-doo-doo
    (I want something else)

With hits like “Semi-Charmed Life”, “Jumper”, “How’s It Going To Be” and more, Third Eye Blind’s fresh take on alternative rock has delighted listeners everywhere since 1993. In recent years the band’s popularity has only grown with their most recent tour-Summer Gods-breaking their previous attendance records. During this 2019 tour the band donated a portion of the revenue from each ticket sold to off-set their carbon footprint in partnership with ClimeCo.
Of their latest full album, Screamer, lead singer Stephan Jenkins said: “My current mood resonates with rebellion, energy, courage, and risk.” Adding that “I seek to combine it with a percussive level of musical immediacy in this collection of songs to cultivate collective idealism and an unapologetic aspiration towards humanistic values.”

@TCT By all means, elaborate or allow him to speak for himself, even though that isn't needed for this conversation. "This has “90’s” written all over it." is pretty self-explanatory. He is saying that this song depicts the 90s perfectly; it's written all over it (also known as a figure of speech). What's funny is that you're the one that can't follow along, and even worse, you thought it was a roast. Maybe I should have said "sounds/looks" to be 100% precise for your honorable. Then again, you're the same idiot that looked at his comment and felt like saying "Also crystal meth." By all means, continue your mission to think you're educating others on what the song is about. lol On the bright side, I'm the only idiot that even bothered to respond to you, so you're welcome. You got your chance to talk with someone. Speaking of being confidently wrong though...

Back when i was younger my local radio station was taking requests, I called in and requested Cocaine by Eric Clapton. The guy refused and told me that their station doesn't support drug use. So I said play Third Eye Blind Semi-Charmed Life and he accepted that request and played it. Funny, I never called him out for being so naive but I still think about it.

This came out the spring of 97 played all summer I was in high school had my very first boyfriend & no cell phones , we walked to meet in the middle of the night. My bf looked like this guy too. I remember stopping & thinking it's never going to be this good again. That was the only time I ever did that . To say this Is the best time of my life. Take me back to the 90s. Before 9/11 before cell phones, social media & life was so fun & easy. I'm aware I sound like my parents talking about the 70s. I only hope when my kids are teens they can feel this way about their youth.

Obviously I had no concept of the meaning behind the words; all I knew was that this song made me feel an energy and happiness like never before. I'm now 36, I just saw these guys in Holmdel yesterday as part of their Summer Gods tour with the love of my life. Absolutely one of the best experiences I've ever had, it will go down as one of the happiest memories of my life. The pure genius of this song still isn't fully appreciated: Every breakdown is different, different tones, instrumentation, dynamics, even what sounds like repetitive choruses have subtle nuances missed by most....none of this was accidental either. TEB's ability to play the same lick so many different ways is what really gives this song life. It's always familiar while always surprising.

I mean, even in my late 30s, I never became some addict of wever. But I won't lie. I have dabbled in some things, that started in my early twenties. I thought most ppl have 🧐. ... like, you're prob lucky if you're not an addict. Bc I know damn well drug use is pretty damn high in the us. But in my late teens? I prob just picked up on context. But never, even to this day, bothered to look that in depth into it. Conveniently, I've never made meth a steady habit. Smoked & snorted it once. Smoking it was a way the better route. Bc the other way, had me up for f'n days & nights, hallucinating. But those were also my last time. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Not to redirect my bs, but it's kinda funny/sad/naive to hear certain kids talk about things now tho ... & I thought I gave ppl too much credit. .. drugs don't discriminate is all I hafta say. Like, I can't even taint them like that. But welcome to the real world... Good luck w/ that!!!

Straight from what I found on Wikipedia:
"Semi-Charmed Life" was written solely by frontman Stephan Jenkins. Jenkins intended to write a song that acted as a San Francisco response to Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side", with the "doo, doo, doot" chants present throughout the song being directly inspired by Reed's song. In regards to the style of the song, Jenkins explained that it is meant to reflect changes that were occurring in the San Francisco music scene, particularly a growing interest in hip-hop. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Jenkins said that the concept of the song was developed through his observations of friends using crystal meth at a Primus concert. The juxtaposition of the music and lyrical content was intentional, as Jenkins intended to illustrate the "bright, shiny feeling" one gets when using crystal meth. However, Jenkins maintains that the meaning of the song more broadly relates to changing periods in one's life. He further explained the meaning of the song:
"It’s about living in the Lower Haight [in San Francisco] and all the machinations that were going on at a time where my friend group was finally out of the [educational] institutions that we’d been in our whole lives - because we’d all been in school since kindergarten and everybody now was in their early 20s and out of college. And then probably underneath that, also the weight of coming to terms with the kind of agony that your life is always about to change and never be reliable." - Stephen Jenkins.
Jenkins was initially against the decision to release "Semi-Charmed Life" as the lead single from Third Eye Blind, as he did not believe that it was representative of the work as a whole. Guitarist Kevin Cadogan was concerned with the explicit lyrical content of the song, as he had fears that radio stations would refuse to play the song. Elektra Records suggested that the band release "Semi-Charmed Life" as their debut single as opposed to "Losing a Whole Year", then prompting the release of several radio edits of the song. Upon the song's success, Jenkins explained that he felt most listeners misinterpreted the song to simply be a "happy summertime jam".

Doo doo doo, doo doo-doo doo
Doo doo doo, doo doo-doo doo
Doo doo doo, doo doo-doo doo
    Doo doo doo
    I'm packed and I'm holding
    I'm smiling, she's living, she's golden
She lives for me, says she lives for me
    Ovation, her own motivation
She comes round and she goes down on me
And I make her smile, like a drug for you
Do ever what you wanna do, coming over you
Keep on smiling, what we go through
One stop to the rhythm that divides you
And I speak to you like the chorus to the verse
Chop another line like a coda with a curse
Come on like a freak show takes the stage
We give them the games we play, she said
I want something else, to get me through this
    Semi-charmed kinda life, baby, baby
I want something else, I'm not listening when you say good-bye
Doo doo doo, doo doo-doo doo
Doo doo doo, doo doo-doo doo
Doo doo doo, doo doo-doo doo
    Doo doo doo
The sky was gold, it was rose
I was taking sips of it through my nose
And I wish I could get back there, someplace back there
Smiling in the pictures you would take
Doing crystal myth, will lift you up until you break
    It won't stop, I won't come down
I keep stock with the tick-tock rhythm, I bump for the drop
And then I bumped up, I took the hit that I was given
Then I bumped again, then I bumped again
    I said
How do I get back there, to the place where I fell asleep inside you
How do I get myself back to the place where you said
I want something else, to get me through this
    Semi-charmed kinda life, baby, baby
I want something else, I'm not listening when you say good-bye
I believe in the sand beneath my toes
The beach gives a feeling, an earthy feeling
I believe in the faith that grows
And the four right chords can make me cry
When I'm with you I feel like I could die
And that would be all right, all right
And when the plane came in, she said she was crashing
The velvet it rips in the city, we tripped on the urge to feel alive
Now I'm struggling to survive, those days you were wearing that velvet dress
You're the priestess, I must confess
Those little red panties they pass the test
Slide up around the belly, face down on the mattress one
And you hold me, and we're broken
Still it's all that I wanna do, just a little now
Feel myself, h ead made of the ground
I'm scared, I'm not coming down
    No, no
And I won't run for my life
She's got her jaws now, locked down in a smile
But nothing is all right, all right
And I want something else, to get me through this life
    Baby, I want something else
    Not listening when you say
    Good-bye, good-bye, good-bye, good-bye
Doo doo doo, doo doo-doo doo
Doo doo doo, doo doo-doo doo
Doo doo doo, doo doo-doo doo
    Doo doo doo
The sky was gold, it was rose
I was taking sips of it through my nose
And I wish I could get back there
Someplace back there, in the place we used to start
Doo doo doo, doo doo-doo doo
Doo doo doo, doo doo-doo doo
(I want something else) doo doo doo, doo doo-doo doo

Every time this part at 2:04 came up with my group of friends in the car who were also singers, we would always sing harmony with him, tenor, baritone and bass. It sounds really good like that, it was just a little tradition we had that year. But now I can never hear this song without missing the boys and belting out my part

I just read this because I can't sleep, went on a nostalgia kick, and imagined hearing you guys in a parking garage on my way out of the club. It made me smile, and I hope you see this regardless of upvotes because one stranger definitely got joy out of your story.

I was 15 maybe 16 when this song hit radio, and I got to hear it. A couple of years before, I joined my local Boy Scout troop at 13, and befriended a total reject named Matthew. He was a year older than me. We weren’t close, or never became close, or maybe we were closer than realized but we always were tent mates when the troop headed out on backpacking excursions once a month. Matthew was bullied by everyone around him but maybe a few of us. Maybe that’s why I related to him so well-but the bullying I went thru was nothing like what he endured. And it had likely been for his entire life up until that point.
I’ll never forget finding out one school day that he never made it to school, and the reason why. I’ll never forget attending his funeral-closed casket, which was strange to be bc ever funeral i’d been to in life up to that point was open casket. I guess I longed to maybe see my buddy again. This was early 1996. I was still 13. It put me in a place even more weird and strange than before. I hadn’t really lost anyone I was close to yet. I was grieving my friend and didn’t even know it, due to the struggle that is middle school and puberty and being slightly rebellious towards my parents….all the things. I loved music and was a band-rat. Matthew had been also. I was physically reminded every day in band practice class that he was gone, too. “The World I Know” hit the radio in the coming years, as did this song. Suicide was still so foreign to me yet so painfully real. Gut wrenching, and left me angry and confused. Must’ve quietly grieved my friend for years, as a teenager. This song helped immensely. I still belt it out to this day, in 2024, at 41. The line where Steven belts out the “yeah’s” is somewhat freeing and I find a little healing thru it to this day. As a young adult I found myself at war, in the Middle East. I bear so many burdens from that still. And since my time in service ended 14 years ago, I’ve lost even more of those brothers to suicide. I get help often and regularly-I have a beautiful bride, and our two beautiful children. I have my bad days, sometimes all too often. Even many, as of lately. Jenkins and the boys made an all-out classic with this tune, and there’s an odd bit of closure that comes with it, that ms largely unexpected but so needed. Music is so amazing that it can do this. Cheers to all reading this.

92 kid. This song among others is so nostalgic. I have a good life but have been a very dark place the last couple days. It’s nice to rewatch these songs that were classics growing up. Things have changed a lot since then

Who remembers American Pie 1999...and this song was on its soundtrack ?
Can't believe American Pie is 19 years old in 2017, and Third Eye Blind - "Semi-Charmed Life"
is now 20 years old, still sounds fresh as yesterday.

I never understood why they censored 'crystal meth'--it's the focus of the entire song. For pete's sake within 10 seconds there's the line "I took the hit that I was given, then I bumped again, then I bumped again." You're not going to change how people see a song exclusively about hardcore addiction by blurring 1 second of vocals. It's like trying to censor a billboard with a postage stamp.

Censorships like this are catered to the child's mind, not the adults. Kids won't know what "took a hit" or "bumped again" mean beyond the most literal sense, and if you take out the mention of meth they'll never figure it out from context. A child listening to this version won't 'hear' anything about drugs unless they already know about drugs, and that's the point.
