Harvesting Nectarines in an Organic Orchard: Who's picking at my fruit?

  • What drastic measures must be taken to save some fruit! LOL Luke and I took a few minutes in the Daddykirbs Orchard to harvest the Nectarines before the birds and bugs took them all. This is a great year for Nectarines because we had a very mild Winter here. I hope you enjoy the harvest! Thank you for joining me on my journey.

    Bought some grocery store nectarines... Extremely beautiful, ripe looking. Sweet. Crunchy, like an apple. Very little flavor. Had the organic label. I'm sure they warehouse and ship well, though. Don't bruise easy and probably hold up well in the produce case.

    • @daddykirbs
      @daddykirbs  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sad, but true. They harvest early so it ships well and "ripens" when it's ready to hit the shelves.

    Hi Blake, l love nectarines.You are doing great with your fruit trees. The only way I could plant fruits and vegetables is to buy the seeds itself. I helped my boyfriend plant and it grew very nice. We planted avocado collard greens and cucumber.

    Pear butter...been ages since I've had some. My mil used to make it until she got too old. It would almost be worth a trip down there to get some....sigh..if only you lived closer, sigh.

      +Chris Dahl I hope the pear butter turns out nice this year. Last year I accidentally added flax seed meal instead of organic sugar! Oops... oh well, I used the pressure canner to can it up and it still tastes fine. The texture is just a bit different.

    I wonder if you can try using garlic to repelled those beetles. They used organic garlic as a pesticide in England palace garden. Blending it in water and soak the trees with it. I thought u have problem with small birds. I was going suggest net ting the trees. Were going try it on cherries tree. That's a big harvest you got.

    I have a peach tree in my yard and know what you mean about the late frosts. The last few years have had late frost that killed off the flowers and had no peaches, but this year I had peaches coming out of my ears! I had all the neighbors taking what they could, I've taken basket after basket. There are still plenty for the birds, bugs, and such.
    I need to pick up the peaches that have fallen to the ground though. My tree is too close to the house to have rotting fruit there. I'll take them back to the back of the yard to compost. :-)

    • @daddykirbs
      @daddykirbs  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Random Considerations It's so good to have that abundance! Do you have chickens to toss the bad ones too?

    • @Randomconsiderations
      @Randomconsiderations 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't have any chickens or any other farm animals for that matter. We have quite a variety of birds in our neighborhood though, so I don't mind if they have their fill. And the neighborhood is having their fill, as are I and the honey. They are super juicy and sweet. :-)
      I'd thought about canning the peaches, but I didn't garden this year because I knew I'd have to many other things going on this year to properly care for the garden.

    Consider yourself lucky! Last year the squirrels stole ALL the peaches and pears we had off of 4 trees. To taunt me they took it up into the big sycamore tree and ate them,dropping the pits around the tree. Come spring rains,50+ peach pits sprouted all around the sycamore. This was nice except i had 50 or so trees growing in the wrong place and i had to dig them up and nurse them till now. I got no fruit,but did get trees to plant. I really wanted to eat those peaches! Moral of the story-you at least got to eat some :) those nectarines you have look good!

    • @daddykirbs
      @daddykirbs  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +a4000t How many trees did you get to replant? I would find that part exciting! ... but yes, I agree it's frustrating when the fruit all goes away.

    • @a4000t
      @a4000t 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I ended up with 40 that survived i think, i have yet to get them all planted out. some are still in juice containers.. should be interesting to see what kind of peaches the tree's make.

    WoW guys, those are beautiful awesome looking nectarines! So many so early, you must be pretty far down south here in Texas not to be affected by the Texas winters cuz here in Dallas, the fruit wouldn't be present so early if any. Your harvest looks awesome. How many nectarine trees do you have? Very nice!!! I was hoping you were gunna take a bite out of one. . .Let us know how they taste. . .sweet, juicy, tart . . If you guys make jam, or jelly or even a yummy farm fresh smoothie bring us along. . . Great looking harvest!
    AHHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhh-Ha-ha-ha-ha! When you pushed on that beetle it popped, clicked and you jumped. . ha-ha-ha-ha, I jumped with you! I've never seen one of those beetles. Strange lil characters there. . . Again thank you and your family for sharing.

    I had a peach tree that we had more fun watching all the animals come by to eating the fruit. My children were 5 and 8 and we would sit by the window for hours. They had a blast. Bobcats would sit in the shadows and jump on the mice and rats. The window was tinted so they couldn't see in. Oppusums and big cats would come by (mountain lions) and sit against the window clueless we were on the other side. Most of the cats were females with cubs. My kids now are fascinated by nature. We only had one tree.
