The one thing that I learned from Gary Lafontaine by watching him tie this pattern is that less is more with this pattern. Sparsely dubbed body combined with a minimal bubble all went to the translucency that he was after.

I agree, Gary said that the key to this pattern is sparse & ugly. Also, he was not for stacking the deer hair wing.

I didn't get to watch live the other evening, but it's Saturday on the Grand River in S. Ontario, and it's -10C with -20 wind chill, and what's a guy to do? Sit and watch these guys tie while I take my first go at Lafontaine's Emergent Caddis on the vise as I watch. I think in a few tries and I'll have it down. You guys made this entertaining and highly educational at the same time...only 3 months until trout opener! Keep doing these videos all winter!!! Thanks!

Fun badinage. Interesting, and entertaining, but............ These are meant to be top fly-tiers, but neither fly was acceptable - both strip the hook and start over. If you want to see this fly done to perfection, Davie McPhail and Barry Old-Clark are your guides. To stop spinning on such patterns, add a dab of Super Glue to the hook shank before laying down the base thread. For less bulk, use Sheer 14/0 or Semperfli threads. To add flotation without bulk, use kapok dubbing, which can be applied in a split thread or 'dabbed' onto waxed thread. The underbody looks more plausible with segmentation.

Very good video, it was funny. I liked the idea of two tiers

Holy Moly, you're the best guys....love the s*** talk and the boasting! NICE! Good health!
Learned a lot about the 'quiet competitive' nature of Tom...but, I see tons of awards behind Tim...jus' saying! 🤣👍🏻🎣🤟🏻

A small drop of super glue will stop the wing from slipping. As for GPS. I found GPS 30 D a godsend for tying durable compare dun and elk hair caddis wings. Super glue and fly tiers wax are your friend

Tim why not use some super glue to prevent spinning

It is NOT easy! I got the Caddis book for my birthday from my parents. Took me forever to get it right.
