Montana “Mini” Intruder Fly Tying Tutorial

The “2” Montana Mini Intruder is perfect for flinging on two to four weight trout spey rods. When you tie one, you can choose to run the hook either up or down on your wire. In the summer, I swing it fast and high through riffles and over buckets with the hook angled down. In cold water, I fish it slow and deep with the hook riding up, Clouser style. This keeps bottom contact to a minimum and hook ups to the maximum. When I get hungry for some solid tugs on trout spey two handers, I tie one on.

If I were to attach the trailing hook with the point up (to reduce snagging), would it mess up the action of the fly?

What makes a fly, an intruder fly?

Good question, an intruder is short for intruding or intrusive to a fish as to solicit a strike. But the concept was brought in by Jerry French and Ed Ward as a trailer hook, to tie a large fly on a small hook. At the time if you wanted a large fly that meant you got a large ol hook. The other concept was to utilize two separate sections of the fly with a thin body between. This allowed the flu to cast easily during a time when synthetics and other non water holding hairs fly tyers were less aware of.
Nowadays it’s a loose interpretation that stays relatively true to the “two station” or “two section” concept. Most will use a trailer hook but not all with advances in hooks.
