  • To meet my daily needs, I usually shop at Pak N Save Supermarket, the cheapest supermarket in Lower Hutt city.
This supermarket is like a wholesale store that provides in large quantities so the prices are cheaper and always full every day.
In New Zealand, they implement plastic-free packaging and do not provide shopping bags. For those who want to buy necessities, they must bring their own shopping bags.
For fruits and vegetables, they are sold per kilo, or per piece or per packaging. Make sure to check the price and size first. For vegetables and fruits sold by the kilo, don't forget to weigh them first to find out the price.
For meat, make sure to read the type of meat first, whether beef, goat or pork. Because the meat sold here is processed and packed independently by Pak n Save, so the cutting tools and packing tools used will be mixed with each other.
Therefore, for Muslims, please be careful and if you want to get meat that is clearly halal, it is better to buy beef or goat or chicken at a halal meat shop that has been certified halal by the government.
There are two ways to make payments, manually with the cashier or automatically through the self-service counter. For me, I use the self-service counter more often because it is faster and I can check the items that have been selected. On average, I spend around $50 - $70/week to shop for vegetables, fruits and groceries excluding meat. For meat, it can cost around $30 - $50/week.
So the total cost of groceries per week is around $100 - $140.
How is it expensive or still affordable?
